********** Stretch Goals************
We're coming up on the last few days of our campaign and there's only just a short time left to help us get to the MOON. We're very excited to go. Ryan has been preparing by living in rural Utah--which is practically the same place. ZING! Just kidding, I love rural Utah.
In all seriousness, though, Arts Northwest is such a fantastic opportunity for us and your support means the world. So many of us have put our blood sweat and tears into this project and to see all the good will come in is immensely encouraging and edifying. If I could wrap every Josh Groban, Celine Dion, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand and big-hair power-ballad cliche in a box and give it to you as my gratitude, I would. And so, on that note, I wanted to let you know about some ways that we want to express that gratitude.
$6,000 or 150 backers - Rarities
So, we decided that if we can reach 6K we want to give something back to all of you. Over that last several years Ryan, Garrett and myself have collaborated on several things together, many of which have gone unreleased and unseen or heard-- including a full-length CD we recorded in a wood-shop while Ryan and I were living in San Francisco and full-length videos from Deep Love's early stages. We want to just let you have these. For free.
$8000 or 250 backers - PARTY
We like to party and we hope you do too. So, if we can get 8k or just 250 backers we want to party like Prince in 1999... with you! Previous parties have included spontaneous karaoke, nacho cheese shots, water boarding (seriously, we water-boarded each other one night just to see what it was like), loud music, soft music, poetry readings, Joe Madden Super Bowl, connect-four, and more snacks than we should admit to. This could be a fondue party where we dress up in turtle-necks and discuss art and culture or we could meet at a high-school football game and pretend we know someone on the team. We're open to suggestions. (In all reality it'll probably be an after party on show days) Whatever it is, though, we want to party with all of you.
$10,000 or 500 backers - Deep Love: A Ghostly Reality Show
This is an interesting one, and I hope we can make it to 10k just for this alone. If we can reach 10k we'll attempt to turn this circus into a pilot episode of what very well could be the next big reality sensation. Perhaps we'll bring a string of suitable zombie bachelorettes for Old Bones to choose as a replacement for Constance, or we'll sample fine cuisines with Friedrich as we travel to Oregon. Or maybe we'll just give Ford Erickson a few cameras and see what happens. Regardless, if we can hit this mark we want to document our journey and let you in on it.
$12,000 or 750 backers - Deep Love Origin Stories
For years Ryan and Garrett have been talking about writing and publishing the origin story of each Deep Love character. Well, if we can stretch all the way to 12k, we'll make it happen and give you all the exclusive first printings.
There are still so many things this show needs, like costumes and a set for example and every little bit you give will help us make this production something very special. Thank you again!

Hi everyone! It's Deep Love season again and we're gearing up for another great run of shows. Like every October for the last four years we're again bringing to life the story of Old Bones, (Team Old Bones! [I play Old Bones]) Constance, Friedrich and Florence, but this time it'll be a little different. We've been invited to showcase at Arts North West in Eugene, OR! That's one (expensive) step closer to our ultimate goal of performing on the moon!! We couldn't be more excited! Seriously, if bold lettering and excessive exclamation points don't prove that, I don't know what will. It's an opportunity for us to schmooze with performing arts professionals--like presenters, artists, agents, vendors and associates. Essentially it'll allow us to take our show for the first time beyond the Wasatch Front and Snake River Plain, where we've been performing for the last 4 years. This is a chance to expand our position as a local show to something bigger.
Here's a little info for those of you not familiar with us:
Set at Old Bones’ grave, Deep Love begins with a dead husband and his living wife, Constance, pledging their undying love to each other. Though Constance cannot see or feel Old Bones’ presence, her love for him goes beyond the grave. Still grieving, Constance meets Friedrich and begins to see life as a possibility again. For a moment, they find solace in each other’s love. Even so, Friedrich, tormented by a history with his ex-lover (Florence), and Constance, still haunted by the memory of Old Bones, cannot fully escape their respective pasts. The entanglement of these four characters’ lives allows you to judge if their love is deep.
Deep Love is a modern breed of classical opera. It is a story told entirely through continuous music. Since its debut performance it has garnered overwhelming fan support and begun to gather critical acclaim. SLUG magazine said "I've never been to a rock opera before, and the likes of Deep Love is something I'd really dig to see more... The cast pretty delicately and skillfully balances elements of both [rock & roll and theater]."
Who are we? Jerk kids who probably never belonged in rural Idaho. OR MAYBE WE DID! Maybe you just don't know Idaho.
Whatever your notions of potato country, we're no different than anyone anywhere who's tried to do something much larger than themselves. It started in 2009 when Garrett Sherwood approached Ryan Hayes with the idea of writing a rock opera. We were all students in Rexburg, ID. Garrett recalls, "there wasn't a lot to do in Rexburg in the winter, so we decided to write a rock opera." Using the bitter cold and their respective run-ins with heartbreak as literary fodder, they composed this story of love and loss.
I was pretty skeptical at first. I mean, who writes a rock opera on a whim? But, when they played the first few songs for me I was immediately hooked and told them we needed to make it happen. We started small. Really small. We slapped together a show at the last minute and and performed for about 50 people at a local club. You should have seen my face paint. I was trying to look dead, but all I managed to do was look like a victorian Iron Man.
THE DEEP LOVE FAMILY
Each year as the show picks up steam, however, and as we increase our production value, we add several new faces to the show. We've become a large and growing family. As I mentioned in the video, after each performance there is a dialogue about how we can make the next performance bigger than before--and it usually boils down to what we can afford to do. After this first performance, our objective was just to take it to a larger venue. After the second year it was to add more show dates and the third was to actually pay everyone involved (except ourselves). We are keenly aware of, and strive to preserve the spirit of how this project started. It began as something we did just for the love of doing something great. It has been an immense joy to walk this path with so many of my friends. And in that same spirit we hope to add you as well to our Deep Love family. With your support we can make this the best year we've ever had.
A LITTLE TASTE
Undeniably this section may come off a bit like free samplers at Costco, (They always snag me! They're so delicious!) but listen to this song and you'll agree that Amy Whitcomb singing the part of Florence is impressive. Some context:
Florence, Friedrich's bawdy and obsessive ex-lover, confronts him about his sudden change and claims that, because she knows the real Friedrich, he should return to her. She scoffs at his current adherence to the idea of love.
The next is an excerpt from the DVD. Garret Sherwood plays Friedrich and sings one of my favorite songs from the show, "Surely Reclaimed." More context:
Friedrich agonizes over his lifelong failure to find lasting peace. He resolves to change, trusting a newness of life will come from abiding with Constance.
Be the first to find love in the exclusive Deep Love board game!
FUNERAL ATTIRE RECOMMENDED
While the show does deal with death themes, it is not scary and is intended to be enjoyed by all audiences. Funeral attire is recommended.
WHO ARE THE DEEP LOVE SLAVES?
The Deep Loves Slaves are what we affectionately call our street team. From time to time we need to call in the troops to get the word out about the latest Deep Love news. Or sometimes we function as an alternative for joining the Boy Scouts. We'll help old ladies across the street, go camping, hiking, partying, karaoke-ing, knot-tying, or any other activity that strikes our fancy.
NEED A PEP-TALK?
You may have noticed that one of our pledge options will get you a personalized pep-talk from Ford Erickson himself. Maybe you're having a bad day or perhaps you need the courage to do something extraordinary. Ford's pep-talks can be tailored to your specific needs and help you to overcome life's challenges with gusto. See an example in the video below.
Ford's Bio: Ford Erickson is a key member of the Deep Love family, and one of the finest men we know. He's inspiring and creative, but most of all he has a flat top haircut that you could set your watch to. If you need motivation, Ford's the man to give it to you.

Risks and challenges
As we learned with our last kickstarter campaign, there are always snafus in fulfillment. We recognize the possibility of any number of unforeseen scenarios that can delay our timeline, but given the nature of this particular campaign we feel extremely confident in getting your rewards to you in a timely manner. This is not a project with a prototype, but rather an investment in our future. The rewards have already been created and are ready to ship upon funding.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
