About this project
Please, stop reading this and watch the trailer first.
“Vagrich and the Black Square” is a feature documentary.
Funny, poignant, smart, sometimes metaphysical.
A hybrid film mixing documentary footage with live action and animation.
Vagrich Bakhchanyan and his wife Irene left the former Soviet Union and settled in New York in 1974. I met Vagrich in 1994. In my humble opinion Vagrich was a genius.
I always wanted to make a film about him and even shot several hours of footage with Vagrich in 1999 through 2005.
In November 2009 Vagrich died.
My wish to make a film has become an imperative.
In September 2012 it seemed that I had secured private funds to complete the project, and we started production.
In Armenia we filmed Vagrich's first solo exhibition in his native land.
We also filmed the artist's funeral. Irene Bakhchanyan, fulfilling Vagrich’s last will, scattered his ashes high in the Geghama Mountains, over a stone covered with ancient petroglyphs. The magnificent Mount Ararat overlooks the site, herds of sheep roam nearby.
We traveled to Kharkov, the city of his birth and to Moscow where he lived bohemian life and worked as an artist in the only semi-dissident publication in the Soviet Union - "Literaturnaya Gazeta".
We interviewed his friends in Moscow and in New York.
We produced several minutes of animation.
I hope by the time you're reading this you've watched the trailer.
In January 2013 I learned that I hadn't secured private funds to complete the film after all.
Things happen. People change their minds.
Our production came to a halt.
I got stuck half way through - with the 70% of principal photography completed, and some of the editing done.
Now I need to complete the principal photography:
• some interviews here, in Metropolitan area, and some overseas
• additional animation
• staging/filming one of Vagrich Bakhchanyan absurdist plays
• several minutes of archival footage
If our Kickstarter campaign is a success, I will do just that.
As I've said already: Vagrich was a genius. On top of that he had a witty, charming, warm and kind personality.
He was universally loved.
He was avant-garde incarnate.
Making a film about someone like Vagrich (not that I ever met someone like Vagrich) is a joy.
My ultimate goal is to share this joy with all of you.
