The Story so far...
Doctor Atlantis is a steampunk adventure set during the Age of Exploration! In this alternate history mariners have proved what common folk always knew: the world is flat and the sea is endless. Traveling this oceanic frontier is Dr. Julius Fowler, acting captain of her majesty’s deep sea exploration vessel the Atlantis. A ship of wonders, the Atlantis is powered by steam and automated from stem to stern.
In the first volume of Doctor Atlantis Dr. Fowler rescued a young man named Chosot whom he found floating half dead in a sinking boat. Together they embarked on a series of adventures fighting sea monsters, battling slavers and freeing Chosot's people.
In Doctor Atlantis Volume Two Fowler and crew contended with innumerable obstacles in their quest to return Chosot's people to their home island. Besides terrifying sea-monsters, Dr. Fowler faced specters from his past come back to haunt him. Questions that were teased in Volume One about what happened to the Atlantis's crew and how Fowler came into its possession were addressed and explored in this sequel. The good doctor learned that you can never outrun your past, no matter how fast your steam-powered ship is.
The Story continues...
The third volume of Doctor Atlantis picks up years after the conclusion of the previous book. Follwing a cataclysmic disaster that leaves the Atlantis dead in the water, Fowler and company are rescued by a mysterious group of travelers from a far advanced culture. These travelers bring Dr. Fowler and his crew to their home, a fantastic city perched on the very edge of the world! Here the Atlantis crew are welcomed with open arms, but are they honored guests or prisoners in a gilded cage?
Project Info and Goal:
Doctor Atlantis is an 88 page graphic novel series written by myself (Ian Ally-Seals) and drawn by Carl Mefferd. The series is being published by Rare Earth Comics, an independent comic company that I founded with local artists in Hartford, CT.
At this point in the production Doctor Atlantis Volume Three has been drawn and is in the process of being lettered! The money raised by this Kickstarter project will be used to cover the printing cost of Volume Three.
Doctor Atlantis made a big splash (pun intended) with Volumes One and Two. The Kickstater community was responsible for its success and we hope you will all support us again so we can continue this awesome comic!
New Reward! Artist David Robles is putting together a bestiary of all the fantastic creatures featured in the Doctor Atlantis series. This mini-book will be included with the rewards package for anyone who pledges $50 for more. Here are two examples of illustrations from the Doctor Atlantis Bestiary:
We are offering a ton of stellar rewards to those who back this project! You can take a look at the right of this page to see them all but here are some of the choice ones I’d like to highlight:
- Personalized sketches (pencil, ink and color depending on the pledge level). We will draw you an amazing picture of any character you want (from Doctor Atlantis or otherwise). Tell us who to draw and we’ll draw it!
- Original art button. We have a button press and we know how to use it! We’ll make a small original drawing, chop it and press it into a button.
- Original art from Doctor Atlantis issue # 1
- Rare Earth Comics T-Shirts
- Sponsorship credit in the comic book and on our website
Personal Backstory to Doctor Atlantis:
Way back in 1998 while hanging around with my friend Anna I got to know her little brother Carl, who was in middle school at the time. He was a cool little dude who loved to draw. It turned out that we both shared a love for comics and after some standard comic book talk (who would be on your X-MEN team, who would win in a fight: Batman or Daredevil?) we got to daydreaming about the comics we would like to make one day.
Before you know it we were spinning a yarn about a colossal, steam powered ship captained by an eccentric scientist. He would sail the endless ocean with his dog Edward, exploring strange new lands and fighting horrific sea monsters. When the daydreaming was done I told young Carl (retrospectively in a very condescending way) that if he ever got good enough at illustration I’d make this comic with him.
Well, thirteen years went by and… well… he got good. Very good. He upheld his part of the bargain so I had to uphold mine! We started pumping out pages of Doctor Atlantis two years ago and haven't stopped. Since Doctor Atlantis came out Carl and I have been lucky enough to build a great following of readers who enjoy the story we are telling.
Risks and challenges
Printing a graphic novel is always a tricky thing, especially if you are trying to get things out on a schedule. We are committed to having this book debut at the San Diego Comic Con 2014 (the Nerd High Holiday). Problems such as improperly formatted files and delays with the printer are common. To combat this we are working with a fantastic printer who are aware of our schedule. We are factoring in both printing and shipping delays into our time table.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
