About

West Colfax Food Desert
West Colfax Food Desert

The Plant The Seed Project would like to host a 4 week Urban Agriculture Summer Camp in order to show youth ages 8-10 in Denver how to grow food in various conditions. The West Colfax Corridor where we have been volunteering our services for the 2016-17 school year is a noted food desert. From Eagleton Elementary where we host an enrichment program, the nearest grocery store is over 2 miles away in any direction. Our camp would maintain a community garden plot together and also have Tower Garden systems for use in the classroom. These would be used as living classrooms and facilitate garden education lesson planning. This opportunity to engage with and grow food on a daily basis will provide several benefits. "From increasing physical activity to fostering healthy eating, gardens can be good for students’ health (Bell & Dyment, 2006; Wells, Myers, & Henderson, 2014; Lineberger & Zajicek, 2000; Morris & Zidenberg-Cherr, 2002)."

As each youth will be given a notebook, they will required to write daily entries and chart various indicators of plant progress. Microscopes and magnifying glasses would be used to further inquiry.  We will start growing mushrooms in order to introduce concepts of mycology. Youth will also be provided time for lunch and recreation. The majority of food scraps will be deposited in our worm composting tower to demonstrate the benefits of "food waste" and the importance of insects and castings in the rejuvenation of soil. Special guests will introduce us to concepts of nutrition and animal husbandry. As a group, we will then develop a plan for selling our produce via farmers market.

Everyday there will be a reading segment where we will read a portion of an environmentally themed book in order to facilitate open discussion and comprehensive activities. After completing the daily garden/reading activities and lunch, youth will finish the afternoon with a segment of arts & crafts. We also aim to have bi-weekly trips with partners such as Jovial Concepts and Uproot Colorado

Risks and challenges

While we do have a few leads, we have not yet secured a site for our summer programming. Ideally we would like to partner with a school site that will already be in session, as they would have a lunch program. Another desired route would be to partner with a local Boys & Girls Club. We will also have to move quickly to gain enrollment, however we think that our price point will be attractive enough to get the enrollment that we desire. We do have Tower Gardens, microscopes, magnifying glasses, art supplies and a worm bin already, but other materials to bolster the program would need to be ordered. We will also have to schedule trips and visitors once we have more details in place.
