About this project
What's the deal?
This Kickstarter campaign will fund the completion of production for the feature documentary film "See Know Evil." The film is an intimate look at the life and work of Davide Sorrenti, a young fashion photographer who met a tragic fate at the height of the 90's New York fashion scene. It's a story about coming to America, about family, about art, about fashion, about photography, and about the way media shapes the stories we tell.
What's the film about?
See Know Evil is a feature length documentary currently in production about the life and work of fashion photographer Davide Sorrenti.
Davide Sorrenti is an elusive figure in the history of both fashion and photography who has left a lasting impression, though to this day much of his story has yet to be told. The son of renowned fashion photographer Francesca Sorrenti, and younger brother to Vanina and Mario Sorrenti, he was born into a family of gifted artists known as the "Coreleones of Fashion Photography."
Growing up in 90's New York Davide didn't pick up a camera until later in his life though he quickly made up for lost time. Before reaching the age of twenty-one he'd already been published in prominent magazines of the time such as Interview, Detour, and Ray Gun coming to be known as New york's fashion Wunderkind. As Davide rose to critical and commercial success, he quickly fell into a spiral of substance abuse. Within six months Davide passed of a fatal overdose brought on by a combination of his Thalassemia which he had struggled with from birth and a small dose of heroin found in his system.
Upon his death a media frenzy swiftly ensued and Davide's tale quickly became an A1 story in the New York Times going on to elicit a speech by President Clinton himself guaranteeing the term "Heroinc Chic" would become a household name.
This documentary is an oral biography told by those who knew Davide best which hopes to tell the real story of what happened in the world of fashion in the late 90's for the first time.
What do we need money for?
Filmmaking is an expensive endeavor, complicated to no end by the costs of filming interviews in two of the county's most expensive cities. We've managed to bootstrap a large portion of the film's funding having already completed the majority of interviews - but we're tapped for funds and we still have two more trips needed to complete Davide's story.
Our first trip will be to Los Angeles to interview actress and former model Jamie King, who was Davide's first love and girlfriend at the time of his death.
Our second trip will be back to Manhattan to interview Davide's mother Francesca as well as several of Davide's close friends and associates we haven't yet been able to sync up with yet on past trips.
We have done everything within our power to stretch our modest budget and using family flight benefits, friend's pads, and school equipment whenever possible we've been able to get a lot done. Your donation will go towards paying for reduced fare tickets for our skeleton crew of three, food and transportation costs, and equipment rental.
What's the timeline for this project?
Once we've wrapped on our last two interview trips we're heading straight to post. We'll be working throughout the kickstarter campaign, and have set ourselves the deadline of completing the film for screening by September 23rd.
You'll be able to follow our progress on our production blog at http://see-know-evil.tumblr.com/ where we'll be posting updates, production stills, behind the scenes footage, and clips from the film.
