UPDATE: Thanks to you crazy kids, we reached our lofty goal in the first 2.5 DAYS!
We are astounded and overjoyed and incredibly grateful.... But we've still got 3 weeks to go and we really can use ALL of the help we can get!
So we're launching a STRETCH GOAL to raise an additional 22k to build our cabanas!
We're already on our way and if we get there, EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO CONTRIBUTES WILL GET A FREE BEER!! It doesn't matter if you buy a $10 pin or a $10,000 holiday party, if we hit that extra 22k, there'll be a frosty glass of giggle-juice waiting at The Royal Palms with your name on it as soon as we're up and running! We now return to our regularly scheduled program...
Oh man. THIS IS IT. You have somehow found your way to The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club's Official Kickstarter Page and we are SO glad you did.
It's hard to believe that just 22 months ago, the concept of shuffleboard meant little more to us than a fond, sun-washed memory of playing with our grandparents on childhood vacations to Florida.
Now, almost two years later, we're the proud leaseholders of a scrappy, 17,000 square-foot warehouse in Gowanus, Brooklyn that is, at this very moment, bustling with local craftspeople who are helping us build the world's first SHUFFLEBOARD NIGHTCLUB.
This tiny twinkle of a dream has blossomed into a something bigger and realer than anything either one of us could've imagined when we first laid eyes on The Mirror Lake Shuffleboard Club in St. Petersburg, Florida back in the winter of 2011. The warm camaraderie, friendly competition and quirky challenge that we found in those first few fateful biscuits we shoved sent us on a path that has, literally, changed everything.
Since then, we've spent every moment of every day enthusiastically explaining the game to future shuffleboard players, proudly brandishing our liquor license to potential investors, scouring the world for shuffleboard memorabilia, choosing toilet seats and glassware and flooring and soda, making sense of architectural plans and building codes and unidentifiable puddle sources. There are days when it is very, very hard. And there are days when there's not one thing better.
And all of this climbing up the mountain is heading towards one singular goal, to bring the game of shuffleboard to Brooklyn. To build a place where people of every age and creed can find an equal playing field and common ground. To swing open our doors and welcome new friends and old to the place we plan to call home for years to come.
Your contributions to our Kickstarter will go towards completing the TEN regulation-sized shuffleboard courts we'll all be playing on and putting our welcome mat out on by the end of November. We need to pour out 8 enormous truckloads (how many gallons is that?) of concrete from the Brooklyn Mix Concrete Company to make the sweetest, smoothest, fanciest shuffleboard courts this fine city has ever seen!
Once we pour the courts, we will start Brooklyn's very FIRST Shuffleboard League right here and now with you, our Kickstarter community. We'll kick off our Royal Palms Inaugural Shuffle Season starting in January. It'll run for 12 weeks... 10 weeks of tournament play and two weeks of playoffs.
This here Kickstarter Campaign is the ONLY place you'll be able to sign up for that league. So, go ahead and call a couple of friends (up to 6, total) to go in on it with you, pick that "Shuffleboard League Fees" Reward over there ------------->
Here's where YOU come in.
We've relied on SO many of you already. You've given us advice and encouragement and Facebook Likes every step of the way. Make NO mistake, we could NEVER have gotten this far without you.
Now, we're asking for one last push to help get us to the finish line...We want The Royal Palms to be a place where we ALL feel like we belong and we want shuffleboard to be a sport that everyone can claim.
It's hard to ask for help, even from the people you know have your back. Thank you for making it feel easy.
With more love and gratitude than we can possibly express in this tiny little text box,
Ashley and Jonathan.
PS-Uh, we got a little mushier than we planned to over here. Sorry about that. We solemnly swear to make all of our updates good'n'snarky.
PPS- 2013 is the 100th anniversary of Shuffleboard in America and we REALLY want to have The Royal Palms up and running before this year runs out. Your contributions to building the court and, most importantly, your participation in our tournament will help us kick off the next century of shuffleboard!
Risks and challenges
Shuffleboard courts need to be poured in a very specific manner to comply with ISA (International Shuffleboard Association) standards. The courts need to be perfectly level and use just the right mix of concrete. The size and angle of the gutters and the painting of the scoring areas also has to be exact to specifications in order to be suitable for professional tournament play. All told it's not your average job and needs to be approached with the utmost attention to detail.
There are also a ton of challenges in organizing Brooklyn's first shuffleboard league. We needs to make sure everyone understands the rules and feels comfortable playing the game. We also need set up a website to keep track of the scores and standings and make sure all teams know when they're slated to play every monday night. Most of all we need to create an atmosphere that's competitive but still fun and makes everyone excited to come play shuffleboard.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
