About this project
NOVEMBER 2010: Hello! We're finally ready to roll out the revised and expanded 3rd edition of Crap Hound No. 5: Hands, Hearts & Eyes! Editor, Sean Tejaratchi has completed the issue, adding 12 new pages in the process, and our printer is ready and waiting for the files. All that remains is coming up with the cash to make it happen. The money we raise through Kickstarter pledges will go toward printing and shipping costs. Anything extra will give us a head start on publishing the next issue -- slated for Spring 2011 -- the all new Crap Hound No. 8: Superstitions!
We're pre-selling copies of Crap Hound No. 5: Hands, Hearts & Eyes and offering an array of other rewards -- including the first ever Crap Hound t-shirt and three different art prints, all designed by Sean! Once the project has been successfully funded we will immediately go to press and you can expect your copies to ship in December -- we hope before Xmas!

BONUS DIGITAL COLLECTION: Hundreds of images in this issue of Crap Hound required extensive clean up and refinement in Adobe Photoshop before they were ready for layout on the page. These images were high-quality intermediate steps that were made during the issue assembly. Plenty were taken from imperfect photos or scans, and as such, they're not necessarily pristine. On the other hand, all have a great deal of detail that inevitably gets lost when reduced to fit on the final page.
All images are of either hands, hearts, or eyes. Many are pure line art, without any shading. Others have high-contrast stippling or grit as shading. Before they were reduced on the page, most of these images measured twice the size, almost always at 1200 ppi (pixels per inch). For a few files, when it's too good to pass up, a high-res greyscale or color version will accompany the high-contrast art.
There will be files for at least 400 pictures. This number counts a set of color, greyscale and/or bitmap images as a single picture, so there will be significantly more than 400 separate files. Most of these images are from the 12 pages added to this third edition.
This bonus collection will probably be uploaded and delivered to you via a download link. File size should be under 100 MB. Format will most often be high-res bitmap tiff. In some cases, greyscale or RGB will be included. All files were created on a Macintosh, if that's a concern.
ABOUT CRAP HOUND: Between a brief introduction and the end credits, Crap Hound is pure imagery. Each page is filled with high-contrast line art, culled from vintage catalogs, advertising, obscure books, and found ephemera. Through sheer volume of artfully arranged iconography, Crap Hound explores the popular meaning, cultural ideals and historic symbolism of hands, hearts and eyes.
The first edition of Hands, Hearts and Eyes was printed in 1996, with 68 pages. The 2004 second edition added 8 pages of content. The 3rd edition contains 12 more, bringing the total to 88 pages. Inside you'll find 16 pages of eyes, 24 pages of hearts, 35 pages of hands, 3 copyright free typefaces, and 2 pages of random images!
Debuting in 1994, Crap Hound became a favorite of both zine readers and publishers, and has received enthusiastic reviews from sources including The New York Times Magazine, RE/Search Books, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
