About this project
2/10/10 UPDATE: My mind is officially blown! We are fully funded, have about two days left to go, and the pledges keep rolling in! While I'm done actively pushing the project (phew!) I certainly welcome the continued support. It takes around $9000 an issue just to take Crap Hound to press -- and there are a lot of other expenses related to shipping, promotion, storage, and eventually paying ourselves something -- so anything extra we raise now is that much less we'll need in a few months when we roll out the next one. If pledges reach $30,000 I'd say walk away, otherwise keep 'em coming!!!
Besides supporting our project, this is also your chance to grab some rewards that will ONLY BE OFFERED ON KICKSTARTER! No. 4 bonus digital images, limited edition print and subscriptions! The subscriptions are an especially good deal as you'll be locked into the current cover price/shipping cost and those things are apt to go up this year. Also, we will probably not be offering subscriptions EVER AGAIN. This is because while we know for sure we have three issues to roll out this year, we have no idea what the future will bring. We may reprint No. 2 & 3: Sex & Kitchen Gadgets, and Sean may have new issues in him, but that all remains to be seen after the release of No. 8: Superstitions.
Thank you for your support!!! Your Faithful Proprietress, Chloe
JANUARY 2010: Hello! We're ready to roll out the revised and expanded 2nd edition of Crap Hound #4: Clowns, Devils & Bait! Editor, Sean Tejaratchi has completed the issue, adding 24 pages in the process(!), and our printer is ready and waiting for the files. All that remains is coming up with the cash to make it happen. The money we raise through Kickstarter pledges will go toward printing and shipping costs. Anything extra will give us a head start on publishing the next issue -- slated for Summer 2010 -- a reprint of Crap Hound #5: Hands, Hearts & Eyes!
We know this is a chunk of change, but we also know Crap Hound has thousands of fans and this long out-of-print issue is highly sought after as there were only a couple thousand of them published more than ten years ago! The beauty of our Kickstarter project is that if you were going to mail order a copy, it won't cost you a penny extra and you can be part of making the whole thing happen (or at least happen a lot faster)! We're also offering additional rewards for those of you who want to kick in a little extra. Some of these rewards such as the 100 bonus images, three issue subscription, and the print (if the edition sells out) will only be offered through Kickstarter! And as of today, the only way to get a copy of the 1st edition of Crap Hound #5: Hands, Hearts & Eyes (retail $60+) is to pledge at the DELUXE level (there are only 20 left)! Once the project has been successfully funded we will immediately go to press and you can expect your copies by March 2010.
ABOUT CRAP HOUND: Between a brief introduction and the end credits, Crap Hound is pure imagery. Each page is filled with high-contrast line art, culled from vintage catalogs, advertising, obscure books, and found ephemera. Through sheer volume of artfully arranged iconography, Crap Hound explores the popular meaning, cultural ideals and historic symbolism of Clowns, Devils & Bait.
This issue was originally printed in 1996. For the 2nd edition 24 pages of clowns and devils have been added and many of the original pages have been revised/added to. In this edition you will find: 8 pages of bait, 21 pages of devils, 46 pages of clowns, 4 copyright free typefaces, and 4 pages of random images.
Debuting in 1994, Crap Hound became a favorite of both zine readers and publishers, and has received enthusiastic reviews from sources including The New York Times Magazine, RE/Search Books, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

ABOUT SHOW & TELL PRESS: Founded in 2005, Show & Tell Press is an offshoot of Reading Frenzy, a small, specialty bookshop in Portland, Oregon devoted to independent, small press and self-published titles. Crap Hound is our main project, but we aim to publish a variety of titles -- zines, comics and books -- with a special focus on good design and strong visual content.
Thanks for your interest in our project! Below you will find additional information about our rewards, including important details on our subscription offer. If you like what you see, please help spread the word by telling your friends and posting our widget on your site!

REWARD DESCRIPTION: Pledges at the FANCY and EXTRA FANCY levels will receive a magnificent bonus: a digital collection of at least 100 of images in their full, high-resolution glory!
Hundreds of images in this issue of Crap Hound required extensive clean up and refinement in Adobe Photoshop before they were ready for layout on the page. These images were high-quality intermediate steps that were made during the issue assembly. Plenty were taken from imperfect photos or scans, and as such, they're not necessarily pristine. On the other hand, all have a great deal of detail that inevitably gets lost when reduced to fit on the final page.
All images are of either clowns or devils. Many are pure line art, without any shading. Others have high-contrast stippling or grit as shading. Before they were reduced on the page, most of these images measured twice the size, almost always at 1200 ppi (pixels per inch). For a few files, when it's too good to pass up, a high-res greyscale or color version will accompany the high-contrast art.
This bonus collection will probably be uploaded and delivered to you via a download link. File size should be under 100 MB. Format will most often be high-res bitmap tiff. In some cases, greyscale or RGB will be included. All files were created on a Macintosh, if that's a concern.
Other rewards include buttons, stickers and a limited edition print (8x10, edition of 250, printing method to be determined -- either letterpress, silkscreen or digital archival pigment), all designed by editor, Sean Tejaratchi, utilizing images found within the pages of Crap Hound.
SUBSCRIPTIONS: The three issues you will receive in your subscription are: Crap Hound #4: Clowns, Devils & Bait (2nd edition, revised and expanded, 24 new pages), Crap Hound #5: Hands, Hearts & Eyes (3rd edition, no additional pages, new cover), and Crap Hound #8: Superstitions (brand new issue!)
This may be the only time and place you will see an offer for a subscription to Crap Hound. Subscribing guarantees you the $12 an issue cover price, regardless of any increase in cost for future issues, it's also a great way to support this venture. We intend to release three issues this year, however we cannot guarantee that will happen. If our Kickstarter venture is successful issue #4 will be released no later than March of 2010. Issue #5 is near completion and should follow a few months later. Sean is already hard at work on issue #8 and we hope to release it before Xmas 2010, but due to the extremely labor intensive nature of the project it may take a lot longer than that, so we're not putting a time frame on the subscription. Please don't contact us with questions about the publishing schedule -- we will keep our subscribers informed of our progress via occasional email updates. You can also check the Reading Frenzy website or the Show & Tell Facebook fan page if you haven't heard from us in awhile. Please keep us updated on your mailing address and notify us if you have not received an issue that has been released within a reasonable period of time.
OOPS! Forgot to include international shipping in the DELUXE subscription. Please add $32 (you will receive 4 separate shipments). Thanks!
Actual shipping costs for Haunted Mansion reward will be added to cost for international orders.
