Mirenda is a comic about a jungle girl who gets a terrifying, possibly undead creature trapped in her leg and the world she discovers while trying to get it out. The story takes place in a constantly unfolding world of adventure and fantasy, and is told with minimal use of text.
Why is there so little text? I want this comic to evoke that sense of wonder you feel the first time you encounter a movie or book from a far off land that grabs you. Those things that give you the freedom to learn what they are about on your own without needing to be told; that magical sense of discovery.
Not to mention it's an excuse to make a super fun comic full of inventive storytelling ideas.
The first issue is completely finished and the purpose of this campaign is to raise money to print a few hundred copies. It has 28 pages of art and will be printed the standard American comic size. The second issue is also nearing completion, so if you enjoy the first one then hopefully you won't have to wait long for the next installment.
Here are a few sample pages from this first issue:
About Grim Wilkins
Grim Wilkins has been drawing and self-publishing comics for the better part of a decade. He is known for his creatively composed comics pages and surprisingly whimsical characters. His work can currently be seen in the pages of Prophet (Image Comics) and Speculative Relationships 2, as well as Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream (Locust Moon Press), in various Spectrum annuals and CFSL Artbooks, and in his old self-published comics like Love Story in the Woods and Ellipses.
Most of you are probably here to purchase copies of Mirenda #1, but I made a special print that will be available exclusively during this Kickstarter campaign and then neverrr agaaaiiin. You are welcome to buy multiple copies and send them to your friends and family or sell them on Ebay.
This is what the limited edition print looks like. It will be about 11x14 inches big:
I also made available original artwork from the comic, which ranges from traditionally inked black and white pages on luxurious Italian watercolor paper to acrylic and watercolor paintings.
Here are a couple of the inked pages, each measuring 13x20 inches big:
And a couple painted pages. The first one is quite large, around 20x26 inches big:
Along with original art from the comic, I am offering to make 4x6 inch or 8.5x11 inch original ink drawings with a character or theme of your choosing. Here are examples of "Cave Mistress" and "Star Coyote", respectively:
Also, every reward tier includes a digital copy of the comic and each purchase of original artwork includes a copy of the limited edition print.
Where The Money Goes
The money gathered from this campaign will go to printing copies of Mirenda #1. If a miracle occurs and there is an overabundance of money pledged then it will go toward travelling to comic conventions and getting Mirenda in front of as many people as possible.
Note: Stretch goals apply to every backer level in which I ship you a book, print, or artwork.
$2,000 ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED! I'll include one purple and one yellow Mirenda bookmark in each shipment.
$3,000 ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED! I'll create an original 2- or 3-color Mirenda screenprint, exclusive to this campaign, and include one in each shipment. The drawing and separations have already been made, but I won't know what color the prints will be until I make them next month. Maybe something like this:
$4,000 ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED! I'll create original Mirenda themed stickers and include them in each shipment.
$5,000: Stay tuned!
Risks and challenges
The first issue of Mirenda is totally finished and I have already printed a couple copies to see what needs to be changed for the larger print run. Shipping is a notorious problem for projects like this one, and I am completely prepared to dedicate the time and effort necessary to getting these books to people in good condition AND in a timely manner. I do my best to keep up with increasing international shipping costs and am making sure not to shoot the whole project in the foot by underestimating how severe they can be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
