About this project
Rain is so inconvenient when you live in a city, like most of us do. When it rains we have a problem: we can’t look splendid. Conventional rain gear is practically too practical and boring.
Our mission is to change that. Therefore we are raising funds to start the first big scale production of Takaokamis collection of super feminine rain clothes.
Stylish feminine rain clothes which will let you cut through the rain gracefully and dry. Which will make you look like a million dollars, even on a bicycle! Takaokami is the name of a Japanese rain god and we chose the name for our rain wear to celebrate our great inspiration: Tokyo. Takaokami brings Nordic classic design together with Japanese quirkiness in a unique blend.
By now we have had SO many emails and phone calls from around the globe - from professionals and "normal" girls alike - asking for us to start production, so we know in our hearts that there is a great demand for us in the rain business. We have even had Sony asking us to make a special appearance along with their newest smart phone in a collaboration called Skybrud - watch the video below, it is pretty cool :-)
We need to place a grand order at the biofriendly green factory, before we can start selling our collection. This is where you come in. With your help, Takaokami can place that bulk order and become self sustained. And then we can actually come to a shop near you.
Please take a look at the photos or the video and tell us that you want us in your life. Even the smallest amount will help. And we will be SO grateful.
These are sketches for the work proces. During the actual production throughout the past year the designs have changed slightly to obtain a higher comfort and more elegance. Prototype. Back to the drawing board. Prototype. Back to the drawing board. And so on...
The Rain Hat, a mixture of an umbrella and the traditional Nordic fishermans rain hat, South Wester. The hat has been the hardest of all the styles to make because of the hat brim, which needs to be very stiff to obtain the shape (so you can actually wear it) and at the same time soft and comfortable. This was finally achieved one week ago after more than a year of hard work and so many prototypes discarded!
Rain Hat retail price: DKK 500 // USD 94
The Rain Skirt is really cool. It is super easy to put on and it looks so chique. It is longer in the front compared to the back because this detail makes bike riding in the rain a dream. It works! Your thighs will remain dry and your looks will remain feminine. You'll never ever have to wear rain trousers again. Yak!
Rain Skirt retail price: DKK 700 // USD 118
The Rain Jacket is the closest we come to being "practical", though the feminine design has not been abandoned. It's just that rain jackets are worn more often than say... a rain dress. We'd like to change that, of course, but let's see. Rain Jacket retail price: DKK 1200 // USD 201
The Treien is loads of fun. It is a short poncho for up to three girls inspired by three umbrellas merging. Ideal for festivals or for getting new best friends at a bus stops in the rain. We made it so that we'd never get boring, but it has become quite popular with great feedback from the users.
Treien retail price: DKK 1500 // USD 252
The Poncho was actually designed for stylish muslim women wearing a burka, thus not being able to wear conventional rain clothes. However, it turned out to fit all women, regardless of their faith. It is quite cool, because - unlike normal ponchos - the top moves along with your head position alowing for a perfect eyesight at all times.
Poncho retail price: DKK 1300 // USD 218
The Rain Dress is the essence of femininity. It has a super complex design with so many details and so much work put into it - but it appears simple and graceful. We would love for someone to use it as a wedding dress in the rain.
Rain Dress retail price: DKK 1500 // USD 252
The Biky is really neat. If you own a bicycle with a basket, that is. It keeps your hands AND purse or bag dry while riding your bike through the rain. It is going to be very affordable even though it has been so hard to make. Remember, it has to fit all sorts of bicycles and still remain elegant.
Biky retail price: DKK 800 // USD 134
We had a show at the Vancouver Fashion Week and it was a great success. Vancouver seems to be very... rainy and fashionable at the same time. Our kinda city :-)
This video shows the collaboration between Sony and Takaokami, under the name Skybrud.. It shows some of the styles in other colors than black. Don't hesitate letting us know if you like these colors instead of black.
Risks and challenges
Though we feel sure that there is a need for Takaokami, there are certainly some challenges to overcome.
The greatest challenge we are facing at the moment is to actually get the rain clothes into the shops. The shops will only buy if there is rain gear in stock. And our green factory will only produce if we place a big bulk order. Placing this order is very expensive. And this, of course, is where you come in.
We already have shops around the globe that are waiting for our styles to arrive. In Canada, in the US, in Denmark. And the rest will come through hard work from shop to shop and mouth to mouth. Your input will be more than valued.
The second challenge comes with the actual production. It has taken more than a year and so many prototypes back and forth to reach the goal of a perfect mix of elegance, comfort, waterproofness and ecofriendlyness. And price. We want to keep production local but this is not possible at the moment, mainly because sewing factories have closed down in Denmark and our neighbouring countries. And the European factories that are still there AND are ecofriendly are SO expensive (understandable) rendering the Takaokami rain gear unobtainable for most. So what to do? Well, the bigger the quantities the smaller the unit price, and that is what we are aiming for.
The third challenge will be to keep the pot stirring concerning public knowledge about Takaokami. We have been graced by good fortune and have been positively mentioned in many countries, and we would like for this to continue. And grow. It would be greater than grand if you could help us building a name.
Last but not least: It could stop raining and that would really suck.
