My first design is a tribute to Ernest Hemingway. He captures the very essence of what I want Raconteur to represent.
As a rugged explorer, Hemingway’s style served as inspiration for the reinterpreted wire-lugs and durable double domed sapphire crystal.
The geometric font and sharply-defined case are inspired by 1920s art deco. By combining this with a touch of Scandinavian minimalism, a sunray patterned dial and thin leaf hands, I wanted to tie together old and new.
The case is completely custom-made and moulded in three parts from 316L stainless steel. With a 40mm width, it will fit most wrists seamlessly. The case comes with a polished finish for a fine and elegant appearance. The caseback has a corrosion engraving of Ernest Hemingway. The first 300 pieces are individually numbered XXX/300.
*This caseback is strictly limited to the first 300 pieces.
The Hemingway comes housed with the Miyota 821 self-winding movement. A true workhorse movement that features a date complication and a 45-hour power reserve. Made out of Japan, Miyota has been producing watch movements for over one century. The 821A is often seen as the Japanese equivalent of the Swiss ETA 2824-2. It is made with 21 synthetic rubies that protect the delicate components and ensures a long lifetime. The Miyota 821 also offers excellent shock-resistance with their proprietary method called Parashock. This method was first tested in 1956 and has been refined ever since.
The upper part of The Hemingway spares no expense. It is embellished with a scratch proof, double-domed sapphire crystal. With a single domed crystal optical distortions could be a problem. A double domed sapphire, however, utilizes both a convex and a flat crystal. This helps eliminate those distortions and provides perfect visibility in all angles.
After a lot of hard work together with the manufacturer, we managed to significantly improve the accuracy of the movement down to +-10 seconds per day, which now compares with the standard grade Swiss ETA 2824-2.
To me, nothing says vintage like fine leather. For the Hemingway, I have chosen two different types of leather: pull-up and suede. The pull-up straps are made from soft, full-grain cow leather and lining made from calf leather. After they have been tanned, they are treated with a special wax and oil coating which creates a unique patinated look. For the more elegant look, there are also two different brown suede straps to choose from. The leather comes from carefully selected cow and calf hides from Italy. All straps are 20mm wide and come with quick release pin.
With strikingly polished indexes and a subtle added logo, the dials blend timeless elegance with Scandinavian minimalism. The hour markers, shaped like gold bars, are moulded in stainless steel and carefully applied to the dial by hand, one by one. The leaf-shaped hands measures barely 0.1mm thick and have a slight dividing angle on top.
The watch pouch is crafted by hand and made out of genuine pull-up leather. On the inside, you will find an extra compartment which can fit another watch or extra straps.
The pouch measures 14x6cm.

My name is Simon Heins. I’m born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, and have a strong passion for great watches, design and photography. Last year I decided to quit my job and embark on a journey to create my own independent watch brand: Raconteur Watch Co. Raconteur is a French word which translates into someone who excels at telling stories, a storyteller. Starting Raconteur Watch Co. and working my way up to this product launch has put all my skills to the test. After having worked on this project for nearly 1.5 years, I can proudly present my first creation: The Hemingway. A quality watch designed with great attention to detail. A blend of vintage and contemporary minimalism. A timepiece for all occasions. Just like I wanted it.
Risks and challenges
The manufacturer I am working with is a family driven business which has been producing watches for decades. We have been working closely together and have been working to refine the design for over one year. During this time we have established a great relationship and I have had the chance to test both the quality of the watches and the line of production, both which I am very confident in. I will do my very best to keep the said schedule of delivery. However, there can always be unanticipated issues which can cause delay. I will, of course, keep you informed of any news or changes during this process.
A huge thank you to everyone who has helped, supported and backed this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
