About this project
Hello and thanks so much for checking out my Kickstarter page!
My name is Sam and I'm a queer/trans filmmaker in Berkeley, CA. My new film FLOAT is a 4 minute experimental short film, shot completely underwater, featuring trans and genderqueer people, swimming naked, set to music by trans musician Rae Spoon. It is inspired by experiences I've had swimming with other trans people, which is a very rare and special thing because of the complicated relationship lots of trans folks have with their bodies, especially in the context of swimming, bathing suits etc. This film is a symbol of hope for the community and an opportunity for gender-variant folks to be themselves, human beings enjoying the magic and beauty of the water. The film is also unique because we had a completely trans cast and queer/trans crew!
This is a project of love and it was an unbelievable amount of work, time and money to pull off our shoot, so we're asking for your support to cover a majority of the costs. Some of the costs included renting a house with a heated pool for the shoot where we could have complete privacy and comfort of all, renting a ton of scuba gear for our cinematographer and on-set dive safety officer, paying our cast and crew stipends and feeding them really good food, buying underwater housing for the camera, and paying Rae Spoon for the rights to use their music.
By donating to our project, you'll not only be helping to bring FLOAT to the big screen, but you'll also get some really cool rewards! You can watch the film online, watch the companion documentary online, get a fun FLOAT button to show your love, get your name in the credits, get a DVD of Sam's film GENDERBUSTERS, attend a yoga class led by cast member, Sparkle, get a swimming lesson with cast member, Alic, get a voice lesson with and cd by Eli Conley, watch movies at Frameline: the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, attend the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center Gala in San Francisco, and attend the Gender Odyssey Conference, the inspiration for the film, in Seattle! You can also enjoy yummy baked goods donated by local supporters that can either be shipped to you or picked up in person depending on your location.
Please help us bring FLOAT to the big screen by donating to our campaign and sharing this page with your friends on social media. Here's to making trans art by trans artists! Thank you so much for your support!

Risks and challenges
I took a big leap when I decided to make this film and was thrilled to see all the pieces come together. We have overcome a ton of challenges to see this film through to completion (including multiple test shoots, a ton of camera research, securing a private location for the shoot, postponing due to inclement weather etc.) and at this point we are looking for support to help cover the costs we've already incurred in production, as well as post-production costs associated with color correction, sound mix, and film festival submission fees. We feel very confident in our ability to complete this film and share it with the world!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
