Ride in parks, streets and dirt trails, and create your own 3D skateparks in this fist Virtual Reality BMX game.
About this project
It's been over a decade since the last major BMX video game but that could change very soon - BMX Ride has been in development for over a year but that's about as far as we can go on our own. And now is the perfect time to get everybody involved. That means you, our fellow gamers and extreme sports fans! Most of the major game systems are in place and we are roughly at the 50% mark, but we need your help to truly make it happen. So sit back, have some snacks and see what we have in store for you :)
NB! Funding goal: 350 000 SEK = ca. 40 000 USD

BMX Ride is a semi-realistic physics-based BMX video game for Windows, Mac, Linux and the consoles. It is inspired by legendary titles like Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX and EA's Skate 3 - games that we love and have enjoyed playing for many years.
BMX Ride combines arcade-style gameplay elements of action sports games with realistic movements, intuitive controls and modern graphics. You can customize your rider and your bike, pick from various indoor, outdoor, skatepark, dirt trail and street locations, and create your very own skateparks with the Park Editor.
Gameplay
You can ride in 8 locations, including indoor/outdoor skateparks, streets and dirt trails, and perform over 40 tricks + hundreds of possible trick combinations.
We feel it is important to strike the right balance between this being a simulator but also a game. We aim to capture the thrill of riding and learning new tricks through practice but we really don't want to overdo it to a level where learning to play would become like a second job. That's what MMO-s are for ;)
Park Editor
The Park Editor allows you to create your very own skateparks and share these with the community. You can also import custom 3D models, so the possibilities are truly endless. Seriously.
Bike Editor
Ride in style! You can use the Bike Editor to alter the color and details of your bike, and also unlock new ones, including mountain bikes and a Mini BMX. And of course there will be a few surprises as well...
Player customization
With the Character Editor, you can customize your rider as you see fit, with dozens of different options for clothing and apparel.
So just to recap: Your rider, your bike, your park, everything will be customisable. We are really excited to see what you guys and gals will come up with.
First and third person view modes
Title says it all!
Ground controls
You will be able to freely walk, run, jump and climb around the locations. So go exploring! And if you happen to find a gun laying around, the game will transform into a GTA style shooter (wait till we spring that news on our lead programmer). Ok, just kidding, that last part might be a bit too far out there but it's safe to say you can goof around to your heart's content.
PC controller & Oculus Rift support
Virtual reality is not simply plain awesome but we feel it might bring a little comfort to those who cannot ride anymore because of medical or other reasons.
+ Music player, challenge mode, advanced score system and more coming soon...
Interactive Echo Games is an indie studio with branches in Estonia, Sweden and Canada. All of us have been passionate about games for as long as we can remember and most of us share the same passion for riding BMX. The classic BMX games that we played a decade ago and are playing to this day have inspired us to make a new game with advanced physics and modern graphics.
RANDO TKATSENKO - The creative force behind BMX Ride. Programmer and designer, riding bikes daily in virtual worlds and in real life. Studied infotechnology and website design. Used to ride aggressive inline and BMX for over 5 years. Best BMX trick - Tailwhip. Best BMX injury - a dislocated shoulder :)
RAVEL TAMMELEHT - In addition to riding BMX for the last 10 years, Ravel has the same amount of programming experience, starting with Blitz3D and now working with C++ and C#. Has developed a racing game and also helped create the car physics simulator ChassisSim.
MAURICIO CASTILLO - Riding BMX and MTB since 2000, Mauricio is a 3D artist with more than 7 years of experience in 3D modeling, animating and compositing. Started doing mods for MX Simulator, has 3 games under his belt and worked on the Latin American Cup campaign for Riot Games. Best BMX trick - Superman.
JUSTIN MABE - Has been around computers since he was 10. Loves creating 3D models and has a true passion for BMX, been riding bikes for the last 10 years. Best BMX trick - Tailwhip.
ERIK-HUGO PAJOS - Erik-Hugo is a creative professional specialized in design. With 15 years of skateboarding history and as a lover of everything sports-related, he is the game's design advisor and co-producer.
HEIKI KURM - An old school extreme sports fan whose love for skateboarding dates back to the '80s. A designer by trade and businessman by experience, Heiki is our producer and "The Grandpa" of our team.
KASPAR AINELO - Driven by extraordinary people, amazing experiences and fascinating stories, Kaspar spent his teenage years at the local skatepark. He has a background in film and commercial production, and is managing our marketing and sales.
KRISTJAN KURM - Sound designer by trade but his love of video games and extreme sports has led the ex-skateboarder to the world of video game development. Kristjan is our audiovisual director.
SVEN SOSNITSKI - Sven is a classically trained composer with an eclectic range of compositional skills, ranging from orchestral to ambient to hip-hop. Got his first bike at the age of 7 and has around 5 years of experience developing mods for Freespace 2.
BMX Ride is in alpha and we are currently upgrading it to the new Unity 5 game engine. That means there will be a marked improvement in graphical quality! Roughly 50% of the game is finished and what we are showing you is not just a tech demo. In fact, all the footage you see here is captured live from the game itself. With successful funding, BMX Ride should be ready for release on Steam in about 6 months.
Ahh, the joys of being an indie developer! :) Limitless creative freedom and... yes, well, unfortunately we've exhausted our own private resources and have reached the stage in development where we need to make a big concentrated push to get the game finished and out to you. Without your help, it will be hugely difficult and time consuming, if not impossible, to finish the game and bring it to a level that extreme sports fans expect and deserve. Your pledges go towards acquiring Unity licenses and assets, hiring extra programmers, artists, sound people, and renting larger offices.
But equally important is the opportunity to bring together extreme sports and BMX enthusiasts from all around the world who, like us, have been eagerly waiting for a game like this to finally happen. With your input, ideas, suggestions, and a whole lotta spit, polish and duct tape, this game can be made into something truly special. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
All creative projects inherently carry a risk. Projects can run out of money, some people might leave and the result might not be as good as expected.
We are extremely aware of this, and that's why we ask for your help only at this particular point. The game is currently in alpha state, which means the core gameplay mechanics have been implemented. So the risk of BMX Ride not happening at all is very-very minimal.
The challenge for us is to really live up to and exceed everyone's expectations, including our own! We've been dreaming of a new BMX game for almost a decade now, so this isn't about just pushing a product to the market, but about fulfilling that dream.
