About

What is Mana?

Mana is difficult to define because it is individual to each person. It is a spirit, a power, and/or an experience. Mana is the living spirit that connects us to everything and everyone and the common ancestor of mankind. It is the power of the ocean; the warmth of the sun; the breadth of the wind and yet, it is even simpler than that. It is what speaks to the hearts of man and brings us into the same family. Mana is unselfish; it is compassion; it is humility; it is family; it is ancestors; it is love, a love for others before yourself. With Mana, there is no I, there is only we. It removes the material drive in our lives and leaves only pure unadulterated energy. In Polynesia, Mana is defined as the spirit or power of a people. Mana does not belong to one culture or one people, it is universal and belongs and is a part of all.

Listen to the powerful voice of the Maori Youth. Will the Mountain of Mana awaken? If so, what will be the conversation? Does Mana have the ability to spread among other nations?

The purpose of this project is to depict mana through documenting the lives of a few Maori youth in New Zealand preparing for Kapahaka competition. We hope to share this experience with other youth around the world. Filming of the participants will begin August 2015 and end after completion of the Polyfest in 2016.

We are looking to reach at least 60,000 youth with this message in 60 days. Please help us spread the news of this documentary and the message that it holds.

Our journey so far

Since the idea of this project came to life in May of 2014 much has happened. We have five schools from the Auckland, New Zealand area that have joined our project. We’ll be following a couple youth who compete in kapahaka from each school. Those participating schools are as follows:

Auckland Girls Grammar School, Nga Puna O Waiorea/Western Springs College, James Cook High school, Mount Albert Grammar School, Hoani Waititi

In March of 2015 our crew flew to Auckland for three weeks. We met with each school contacts which consisted of a member of their Administration and their tutor for kapahaka. We also met and shared our project details with a Maori Television producer. While in New Zealand we were also able to visit the South Island to watch the biggest kapahaka competition in the world, Te Matatini as well as visit Tauranga, New Zealand, the place Te Anu was born.

Te Anu Marie Tonga

I love to buy deodorant. I get in a rage when I accidentally bite my tongue while eating. One of my favorite author’s is Kahlil Gibran. I want to marry the 14th Dalai Lama in at least one of his life cycles. I consider J.R.R. Tolkein’s written works as holy writ. I am “thee” Daddy’s girl. I hate doing my hair. I’m the favorite Aunty. Pondering is a hobby. I think adults are boring. I love to eat good food with good company. I hate taking pictures let alone giving them (hint hint ;) ). I would take a bullet for my pets. My family is….there are no words in the languages of men to convey my deep love for them. Food and inquiry are two of my love languages. I am the best dishwasher in my family.

 Heather Mae Harrison

I am a Session Director at a youth camp called Youth For Freedom And I work at my family’s pizza restaurant.

I grew up in a large family. One of six kids and TONS of cousins. I am very close to my family and love to spend time with all of them. You can hear us laughing and talking three houses down when we all get together. I LOOOVE to eat ice and good food! I love to sing. I am a dreamer. I love to meet people who are passionate about what they do and learn about that topic from them. I love to read and I consider many authors and characters in books my mentors and friends. Yes I have “real” friends too. They are the best! I have been a counselor and a session director at a few different summer camps and been a mentor to youth for 7 years now. I feel privileged to have met so many powerful souls. I feel honored not just to meet them but to laugh, to play, to read and discuss great books and truths, and really, to learn and to grow by their sides. Laughing is one of my favorite things! I am usually pretty quiet when I first meet people but if you can get me sincerely laughing I am all in from that moment on. I laugh at my own jokes just as much as I laugh at other peoples. Joy is one of my favorite topics to learn about and I am always seeking to live a more joyful and gratitude filled life.

Sarah Abeysekera

I did not like High School but I loved my summer job flying in helicopters. I did not like nursing school, but I loved working several years in Newborn Intensive Care. I did not like college, yet I got a second degree in International Studies. I DO love my husband and I love his family along with the beautiful people of Sri Lanka from where he was born. I love the founding principles of the country which I was born into, the USA. My mother is Spanish, born in Taos New Mexico and my father is Caucasian, born in a small country town of Grantsville Utah. I have been blessed to see the countries and people of Sri Lanka, India, the Dominican Republic and soon Spain. Through the challenging times of life I have met the 'Great' of this world - this is no coincidence. They have taught me that the answers to life's struggles lie within the hearts of the simple. May the simple have the strength to press forward and unveil the answers.
