About this project
We want maths to be more fun
We have invented Cat Maths, a learning resource and set of games that children aged 5 to 8 love, and that provide opportunities for a range of maths-based learning experiences. As the cards lend themselves to open-ended activities as well as more structured games, they are ideal for children to play with at home or in play-based learning environments as well as more traditional classes.
Learning maths needs to be more fun
Many people find mathematics uninteresting and difficult. However, mathematics is a very important subject for future happiness in life, confidence and options.
We have had great success with our Dragonistics data cards, and The Dragon Games. Children and teachers love them, and they are versatile, fun and educational. You can see a video of the Dragonistics data cards in use in a classroom here.
The Cat Maths cards are similar to our successful Dragon cards, but aimed at a younger age range - 5 to 8. Like the Dragon cards, they are rich in detail, which enables them to be used for a wide range of fun learning activities.
Advantages of the Cat Maths cards include being inexpensive and easy to store - very helpful in modern classrooms. They are also versatile and can be used for a number of activities at different levels, so are good value for money for home use as well.
How to use Cat Maths cards
The Cat Maths cards can be used in the classroom for learning activities including counting, comparing, adding, subtracting, ordering, sorting, statistical analysis, graph making and developing mathematical language. They can be used for individual, small group and full class activities, and a wide range of games.
In the following clip, a 5-year old explains her arrangement of cat cards by the number of toys they have. You can see total immersion and wonderful teaching opportunities as she tries to communicate her ideas.
You can see a range of twelve activities and games explained in a series of short videos here. Using Cat Maths Cards.
Cat Maths cards are also an educational family game, with multiple games in one. A booklet with rules for different fun family games will be included in the box. The games include Cat Adoption, Crazy Cat Ladies, Herding Cats and more. Several of these games are also fun for older family members.
A set of Cat Maths cards
Each set contains seventy-five Cat Cards, each with their own name and characteristics. As well there are twelve (orange) Attribute Cards and twenty-seven (green) Value Cards which are used for games and activities. We are developing an array of lessons, games and activities based around the Cat Maths cards. Some activity and game instructions will be provided in the box so that teachers and families can use the materials straight away, while others, including videos will be on our website and added to by us and users.
Statistics Learning Centre
Statistics Learning Centre creates high quality on-line and physical resources. We are a social enterprise, with the aim of empowering all teachers to teach statistics, and all learners to love mathematics and statistics. Dragonistics data cards and The Dragon Games are available on our store. You can read about our impact here: StatsLC Impact.
We, Dr Nicola Petty and Dr Shane Dye, love to make fun and engaging resources to help teachers and learners in mathematics and statistics. We set up StatsLC more than five years ago, soon after Christchurch was devastated by a series of earthquakes. We enjoy working together - Nic comes up with wild ideas, and Shane helps to tame them and turn them into reality. Both Shane and Nic have backgrounds in Operations Research, which include applied statistics, and teaching. Dr Nic is known for her helpful YouTube statistics videos which have had more than two million views.
The fantastic art work, design and film-editing has been provided by family members, William and Jessica.
Teachers are very busy and may not have time to create or find innovative resources, so we are providing these cat cards to help them. We are particularly taken with the work of Jo Boaler of YouCubed, and our materials follow her philosophy of rich group work embedded in a social constructivist framework. We are also interested in the role of play in learning mathematics for understanding.
People contribute for various reasons
- to know that you are helping a really sound learning resource to be developed and placed in schools
- to support StatsLC in gratitude for the many free resources we have provided on YouTube over the years - or because you like us ;)
- to get copies of the Cat Maths cards for yourself, your class or your family
Other rewards include being able to name one of the cats, or having your cat drawn by our talented cat artist. We also have a corporate pledge level so that big givers can be recognised in the materials that will go to the schools.
We really believe Cat Maths will be a valuable addition to all Primary classes, starting in New Zealand. You can help make it a reality.
Our Big Goal
Our aim is to help children learn and enjoy maths, by getting Cat Maths into every classroom, starting in New Zealand (where we live!) To provide one set of Cat Maths cards to every school in New Zealand will cost $120,000.
Our starting point
If we reach our funding goal of $8000 we can still get a shipment of Cat Maths cards produced at a reasonable price, and get them to 100 schools. It will be a harder job to get them out into the world, but it is still viable.
$20,000 NZ will pay for the manufacturing of Cat Maths cards and place one set in each of 300 schools.
At $40,000 NZ we will be able to place one set in each of 600 schools, which is nearly one-third of the way to all the schools in New Zealand. And at that funding level we can manufacture two versions of the Cat Maths, so that there are 150 unique cats to work with if a class is using two sets.
Schools to receive the Cat Maths cards
If we reach our ultimate goal of $120,000, then we will send one set of Cat Maths cards to every primary school in New Zealand. If we reach a smaller goal, then we will allocate Cat Card sets first to those schools nominated by pledgers, and then to those schools perceived to be most in need.
Please ask any questions about us, our mission and our Cat Maths cards.
Remember you could be part of bringing a truly worthwhile mathematics teaching resource to the world.
Risks and challenges
Most of the art work for the Cat Maths cards has been completed, so there will just be minor changes to be made before the cards go to the manufacturer.
We have already completed two projects with our manufacturer, Dragonistics data cards and The Dragon Games. Both of these were completed to our satisfaction and within time and budget.
We have been conservative in our time estimates so that we can be sure to deliver on time.
We are also aware of the effect of fluctuating exchange rates between the USA and New Zealand, and have allowed for that.
