What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Introducing Retrotube a stylish, compact, all in one DIY Raspberry pi case. Good for more than just games. Add some living room swag to the office for all your Pi projects requiring a dedicated screen in limited space.

Full kits include:

  • Quality 8" LCD panel with rich colors and deep blacks,
  • 3w x 2 stereo class D audio amp w/ volume knob & 2 x 3w 1.5" speakers
  • Hard power switch
  • Micro SD to SD extension
  • All misc wiring, cables, hardware, speaker grille cloth, case feet.

No soldering, crimping, power tools required for full kit. Note: No kits or assembled units come with a Pi or power cord. 3a power supply recommended (5v).

Retrotube's Beginnings: Retrotube started as a fun project to do with my 7 yr old son to start getting him in to electronics and to build him his own Raspberry Pi computer he could paint and cover with stickers. Its design inspired by memories of waking up before mom and dad and sneaking out to the living room to play video games when I was his age.

Since than Retrotube has had several redesigns of its internal components and back panel to make it more reliable and modular including updated industrial grade 10a power switch, detachable power cord, modular internal wiring, optimal audio wiring for highest quality sound and carrying handle that gives easy access to screen controls. All of these refinements are reflected in the full kit.

I have already invested the time and money in 10 various functioning and finished prototypes to establish good production methods, each one getting better than the last. This also gave the benefit of having suppliers lined up whom I've been able to work with directly rather than relying on on-line inventory. This is as far as I can go on my own though. I need the help and support of backers to be able to obtain parts and wood in bulk, also to help spread the word. Share the project with your friends.

Funds from the campaign will go to Parts needed for rewards and packing supplies. A new website for Retrotube with a store, blog and forum. Development of some Retrotube accessories. All rewards will ship USPS Priority or First Class International.

I would like to Thank all of my supporters up to this point, most of all my wife Nicole and three kids. A huge shout to all my backers through out the campaign, I owe you a great debt of gratitude. I sincerely hope to share the enjoyment and satisfaction of building this fun project.

Risks and challenges

There is not much risk involved. I get the screens directly from the manufacturer. All the other internal components are available from multiple sources at comparable prices. I am a one person operation, and control the quality of every reward shipped.

I have overcome many challenges so far, including the financial and logistical hurdles to design a fun, reliable, durable, DIY project, but I'm unable to make it available to everyone without the help and support of backers.

The original Retrotube design was not modular and required a workshop and soldering ability. It has been a challenge to make the full kit as modular and tools free as possible without raising production costs. After trying many internal designs and scouring for just the right parts I came up with a configuration that requires some minimal soldering and crimping by me to make it more tools free for the end user. I can do the soldering and crimping required for one full kit in less than 2 minutes and expect no issues meeting demand. Everything else for the kits could be currently scale-able up to 150 per month, more than I expect to need for the campaign. I can assemble 2 complete, finished cases per day, currently offering 15 per month. Currently lead times are estimated at 2 - 3 weeks for kits and 3 - 4 weeks for assembled cases, after receiving funding, to start shipping (20th of June for kits and 27th for first wave of assembled cases).

Trying to figure out what kind of kits to offer has been a big challenge. My goal is to make these as customizable as possible while still being able to offer them to those who don't have less common tools such as a soldering iron. Additionally, speaker grille cloth is included with every kit as it's not something you can buy less than a sq. yard of. I would very much appreciate feedback on the kit configurations.
