The 1.1 Update has been released, fixing known issues, adding many more sound effects, and making enemies variably stronger. As well as other small updates that add to the VN's quality.
Note: The Cloud Novel version of the game may crash and or run slow due to a memory issue. There is a failsafe that will return you to the moment before the crash, although it is recommended that you play the downloadable version since there are little to no loading screens in it.
There are 3 secrets to find in chapter 1, two of which are secret endings. The third is a mystery all it's own, will you be able to figure it out?
Known Issues have been fixed in the 1.1 update.
Symbiotic is a sci-fi action drama with dark undertones, and a love story the likes of which will be a roller coaster of emotions. As Zaydin and company go through the rigorous training to master the use of their symbiote partners, they must overcome numerous obstacles and fight enemies far beyond their control, all while dealing with their emotional state as they mature. The race is on for the survival of mankind in this grueling war with another world!
Zaydin is a young complicated kid trying to cope with the loss of his mother, an evil entity attempting to control his mind, and the war of the worlds waged by the alien Symbiotes who have come to eradicate or consume all life on earth. While attending SCAR institute, the principal of the establishment, Neolinus acts as his caretaker/guardian, at the request of Zaydin’s mother. Neolinus is seen as a figure to the young orphan. Elliosa and Kadin, the friends he never wanted, have extremely different views on Zayden. Elliosa has a major crush on him, and Kadin being the protective big brother type (Even though they’re not related), sees him as a dangerous jerk. They are joined by their symbiote partners, Tama who belongs to Zaydin, Pinkie Elliosa’s loveable friend, and Spike the “tough guy” belonging to Kadin. Together with the rest of the school they will discover what it means to be at war, not only with the aliens but also with their own emotions.
Seasons & Chapters:
This Visual Novel will be based around a system of Chapters and Seasons. All chapters within the first season would be free to play once you have bought the game, and those chapters have been released. The following seasons would be purchasable DLC due to the size and amount of content within each season. The first chapter of the next season would be freely playable, so that cliff hanger endings are partially resolved if you decide not to buy the next season. Chapters in the seasons come out when they’re finished, so you don’t have wait for the season to be finished to continue the story.
The first season begins with introductions of the wide cast of characters, and the main protagonist, Zaydin, being rebellious towards SCAR Institute and his caretaker, Principal Neolinus. Zaydin must deal with his emotions, repressed memories, relationship with Elliosa, rivalry with Kadin, and a dark evil presence lingering in his mind as he goes through this advanced high-school setting. The war that wages between Earth and the symbiote planet Metamor threatens to destroy everything, and forces the children of Earth to rise up and protect the planet against these monstrous being. As you progress through the Visual Novel you will be sent on required (and some optional) missions to kill the Sym-Monsters sent to Earth from Metamor. Zaydin’s ego and bad temper constantly get him into trouble, whether it’s his caretaker/principal, the Class S president Alastair, or even his own “friends”, Zaydin acts out and antagonizes everyone around him… but is he doing it because he’s a bully, or for some other reason?
Psychopath or Savior:
As you progress through the story and missions you will be given a choice that decides whether you will be punished like a villain or hailed as a hero. In missions you can fight Sym-Monsters and save Civilians. It is required that you fight and kill a certain number of Sym-Monsters, however it is NOT required that you save the civilians, this gives way to a moral dilemma… do you save everyone like a true hero? Or do you let them all walk into the fates they would have endured had you never even arrived? Doing either of these to an extreme degree may result in a secret ending as well as changing the game later down the line, opening dialog trees, recruiting allies, or causing you to encounter something truly terrible…
"A kinetic novel is a linear type of visual novel where no narrative or gameplay choices typical to the latter are presented."
Symbiotic is more akin to a Kinetic Novel then a traditional Visual Novel, since the game is more linear and the ending is the same regardless of what you ultimately decide to do; however, it is possible to change the difficulty of the game and dialog of the ending based on your decisions. As mentioned above you can get a Psychopath or Savior ending in every chapter of the game. With this comes new challenges, allies, or dialog trees you wouldn’t see otherwise. The new allies can replace party members in missions allowing you to customize how you play through the missions. The challenges come in the form of unique enemies that are angry and vengeful towards Zaydin and co. for not preventing this from happening.
The goal of this KickStarter is to have the ability to work full time on Symbiotic and make it the best it can be. It was originally planned to be a premium Webcomic for Tapastic, but burn out, failure after failure, and certain people who work for/represent Tapas caused me to reconsider whether they were someone I would want to involve myself with. This gave way to looking at other ways of creating a story and eventually finding Visual Novels as the best method, and then discovering the online engine “CloudNovel”.
Here’s a list of what will be made if Symbiotic is funded (without stretch goals):
- The entire first season.
- Multiple chapters released as they’re finished. This will allow you to play through the chapters at a quicker pace rather than waiting for the whole season to be released months or years down the line.
- At least 3 endings for every chapter, 1 normal, 1 savior, 1 psychopath.
- A few original OST’s for uniqueness (2-4 soundtracks)
- Customizable ally system during missions, allowing you to change out who you bring into the field of battle (does not affect story, and is only achievable through Savior endings).
- Different enemies will have different attacks and ways to defeat the party.
Here’s a list of what I hope to be able to make using the stretch goals:
- A complete Original Soundtrack.
- Voice acting for the whole cast of characters.
- Chapter 1, and every chapter following, making use of fully animated segments (like the animated trailer seen above, and the animated ending), including the beginning of the first chapter, the scene with Neolinus talking to Zaydin, the hallway scene, etc.
Something that has recently exploded on the internet is the concept of “platform exclusive” titles. The idea of platform exclusive isn’t anything “new” since Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox all have their own platform exclusive titles. Although, the term IS new to the PC world and has caused some massive backlash to developers and companies alike. This FAQ is made to shine some light on MY STANCE with platform exclusive, as it pertains to “Symbiotic”.
- Q: Is Symbiotic a “platform exclusive” title?
- A: At the current time there is nothing in the works to make Symbiotic an exclusive title.
- Q: Will Symbiotic ever go exclusive?
- A: If I were ever offered an exclusivity deal, before accepting I would try to explain the situation with my backers and get feedback (if I was allowed to discuss it). More than likely I would accept the offer and try to compensate my backers, because that’s what any decent human should do.
- Q: What exactly IS “platform exclusive”?
- A: Basically, a developer or company will sign a contract with an online store stating that they will host their game on that store only, for a certain amount of time. In return the store will give the developer or company a large sum of cash to help make the game the best it can be.
- Q: (hypothetical: game went exclusive) I don’t want to download/use [platform] but I backed you, what now?
- A: If Symbiotic went platform exclusive and you truly don’t want to support that platform, or you want to wait for the contract to end and the game released to other stores. I will either try to issue a refund or hold a log of people who want to wait and then issue a key to the online store you choose when the contract has ended, it would depend on what the individual wants.
Keep in mind this FAQ is geared towards attempting to keep the peace for the sake of the game. If an exclusivity deal were to be signed, I would want everyone to be happy with the outcome. The deal would not be made with the express purpose of making more money, the money made would go toward making the game better and hopefully faster.
Zaydin is a young complicated kid trying to cope with the loss of his mother, deal with the evil entity attempting to control his mind, and fight the war of the worlds waged by the alien Symbiotes who have come to eradicate or consume all life on earth. Suffice to say, Zaydin has a lot of issues he must deal with in this world and which results in him pushing everyone in his life away.
Tama is a fun loving little Symbiote that is always attempting to look out for Zaydin, his partner. Unlike Zaydin, Tama is much nicer and easier to get along with. He tries to make friends with others but because Zaydin actively avoids everyone, Tama is unable to truly make friends. Though as long as he has Zaydin it’s not a big deal to him. Zaydin only sees Tama as a necessary tool and doesn’t really like him, while this does sadden Tama, he still sticks by his partners side.
A young student of the SCAR Institute who has a crush on Zaydin and wants nothing more than to make him see her. Elliosa is a kind girl always helping those in need, even if they wouldn’t help her in return. Because of this, many student’s around the school tend to be genuinely kind toward her, and some would just take advantage of her given the chance. She doesn’t really need to worry about the people who would normally take advantage of her because of her “big brother” Kadin. Kadin is not blood related to Elliosa, but he looks out for her and defends her anytime she needs it.
Elliosa's best friend, Pinkie is a sweet little symbiote that only wants to see her partner happy. She enjoys eating sweets with her partner even though she doesn't need to eat to survive. Pinkie loves being around Elliosa due to her positive and upbeat attitude, even when things look grim. She and her partner are always talking about what’s going on around the school and their interactions.
Student of the SCAR Institute, Kadin, acts like he's Elliosa's big brother even though they have no actual ties to being brother and sister. Kadin is a strong individual; he was preparing to be a high school football player before being offered a full ride scholarship to the SCAR Institute. Kadin and Elliosa didn’t know each other until they met at the institute, so his reason for acting like a defender and big brother towards her has nothing to do with childhood friendship or anything like that. The real reason why he acts like a big brother is much darker and more sad…
A spiky ball of gusto and Kadin's partner, Spike is a big ball of tough ready to take on anything and everything MUCH bigger than himself, even if it means he gets knocked down over and over. His eagerness to take on the world will occasionally get him in trouble and facing off against opponents’ that others would actively avoid, like the Seven S’s.
Neolinus is the principal of the Symbiote Combat and Research (SCAR) Institute. He makes sure the students of his institute are properly trained and educated. He also must make sure the government continues to supply the money necessary to keep the students fed, educated, and able to protect the world. Neolinus is a mysterious person who keeps almost everything to himself, even though he is Zaydin’s caretaker, he has no children of his own and no wife. Everything he does is for the safety and protection of his students and the world. As the story progresses you will learn of Neolinuses past and what he has done, but it won’t be pleasant…
The president of S Class within the SCAR Institute. Alastair is the leader of the Seven S's, and someone in the institute you don’t want to mess with, along with Zaydin. Alastair has worked long and hard to get where he is and believes what he is doing will finally bring about the end of Metamor and free the Earth from the threat of destruction. He and his Seven S’s are the top ranked students in the entire school in fighting and grades. While Zaydin is the top ranked fighter in the school, his grades are abysmal in comparison to Alastair and the S’s.
White tier symbiote, Osmund is a fierce warrior ready to follow Alastair into battle to defeat anyone who would stand in their way. Osmund is a loyal partner and friend to Alastair and would do anything to protect him. White tier symbiotes are very rare, there are currently only Seven pure white tier symbiotes, and they all belong to the Seven S’s. While Osmund is more laid back as a leader, he does get concerned when his partner is in trouble mentally or physically.
Taya is a very apprehensive and shy individual, not much is known about her. The staff at SCAR don't even know much about her other than the fact that she showed up along with some orphaned children. Taya doesn’t have any friends and tends to stay from others as she gets bullied quite often. The bullying isn’t usually physical, but mostly psychological and emotional, but the rare cases of physical bullying do take a toll…
Taya's symbiote partner and friend, Blaze is strong willed and ready to fight. While he loves fighting, he does try to keep a cool head in the face of danger, though his cool head quickly flares up when he or his partner are insulted or attacked. The bullying that plagues Taya truly infuriates Blaze and causes him to lash out against the bullies. Blazes anger, in most cases, will cause the bully to just walk away but sometimes it can make things worse for both of them.

I will create an official merchandise store for anyone to be able to buy Symbiotic merch. This stretch goal is important for more reason then to just set up a merchandise store. Reaching this goal would also allow me to upgrade my laptop, one that I got in 2011 and is only hanging on by a thread. While most of my work is done on my desktop, I also do a lot from my laptop when I leave home.
Reaching this goal would mean that I could commission a complete original soundtrack for Symbiotic and give the game a unique feel from other indie Visual Novels.
Reaching this goal means I can hire voice actors and have the game voice acted. The animated trailer and animated ending to chapter 1 will be dubbed over. Giving the characters voices will get me closer to making the game the way it was intended to be made. (Note: Not ALL characters will be voice cast. Civilians, unimportant side characters, and some others may not have voices during main parts of the game. However, if I reach the “Fully Animated Segments” goal I will try to give every speaking character in the animated segments a voice, even if they don’t have one outside of animation.)
The animation seen in the animated trailer and the ending of chapter 1 will be added throughout the chapters with music, sound effects, and voice acting. Chapter 1 would also be re-made with animation included, replacing some of the CG scenes such as the intro, the conversation with Neolinus in his office, the fight scene in the Sym-Arena, etc. Achieving this feat would be astounding, it would allow me to make the Visual Novel the way it was intended to be made. Please bear in mind that all animation is done by me and I do not generally hire help or outsource it. With this money I can look at options to help get the animations finished quicker and looking better, possibly with better looking detailed backgrounds.
Every speaking character in the Visual Novel will have a voice! Even if they are a civilian, side character, or an ASO speaking lackey, they will all have a voice of some type.
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest issues I may run into isn't necessarily related to the making of the game, since most of that is done by me anyways. The issues I'm more worried about is getting the funding to make this story/game a reality.
I've made tons of projects in past years, including my webcomic which I hope to reboot one day as a Visual Novel or video game. Projects range from Naruto fan-comics, 3D modeling, fan-trailers, trying to make a fan-game in Blender, and making my own webcomic. I've loved working on all of those projects, but none of them allowed me to work on the project as a job and set my full attention to them. This is the first time I would be able to focus solely on making the project the best it can be, and give people something they can follow along with and enjoy.
If funded, I will put my best foot forward into making this game a complete reality. The funding for this project is important, not only because it allows me to create the game without needing a full-time job, but also because it shows me people are actually interested in the story and game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
