I have been making belts for a few years now and Oak Bark Tanned leather from J & FJ Bakers tannery in Devon is by far my favourite leather, it looks great, it feels great and is a joy to work with. It is still made the traditional way on a site that has had a tannery there since Roman times.
I make all of my belts by hand, from cutting the straps from the hide to hand stitching the buckles in place.
My goal for this campaign is to promote British belts to the Kickstarter community, English bridle leather, British brass buckles and hand made in Britain. (albeit by an Irishman!)
A successful campaign will allow me to not only fulfil all rewards but will allow me to expand my business and introduce new products and designs using premium materials.
Oak Bark tanned leather is made by J & FJ Baker tannery in Devon. A tannery has been located here since Roman times.
The leather is 4-5mm thick and is truly a beautiful leather. It takes over a year to make each piece the traditional way. The wait is worth it, it even smells different to other leathers! A belt made from Oak Bark tanned leather will last a lifetime. Each belt is 1.5" wide and you will have a choice of 3 colours, black, brown or tan.
The buckles are all made of cast brass in a midlands foundry, a classic westend style in 3 options
- Natural brass
- Nickel plated brass
- Natural brass with steel pin
All belts are made by hand in my workshop in Cardiff, I only use hand tools (and elbow grease).
I cut all straps to 1.5" width, each strap will be cut to the appropriate length for each backer, edges will be bevelled, dressed and burnished by hand resulting in rounded smooth edges.
I hand stitch each buckle in place using Ritza 25 Tiger thread, a very strong woven polyester thread, not British I know but it is the strongest thread I can find. Once assembled I punch the holes as required and then wax, buff and condition the belts.

Risks and challenges
I am very confident that deadlines will be met if the campaign is a success, I know how long it takes me to make a belt and I have allowed extra production time to be on the safe side.
The only possible delay may be with the materials, however I don't anticipate any delay and if there is I will update the campaign accordingly and let everyone know how the issue will be dealt with.
Please help spread the word and share on your social media networs, thanks.
