SPY V SPIA TEASER
Two rival international spies from across the globe discover they've moved in next door to each other and form an uneasy, love-hate frenemy state. When mysterious ninja attack in a nefarious plot to overturn the world, the duo joins forces only to discover secrets about their past, their future, and their hearts.
SPY V SPIA (SvS) tells the story of two spies (one American, one Italian) very eager to put their perilous spy days behind them. Easier said than done — and the fuel that makes this short-form spy parody with a rom com twist so appealing. Picture contemporary noir and the French OSS 177 films melding with LALA LAND — a perfect collision of action, comedy, music and drama set in present day Hollywood (both glamorous and gritty.)
My goal is to create a small, kind-hearted, über talented, super flexible crew to bring SvS to fruition — and we are well on our way. The script is written by Erin and Carlo Carere — who, fortunately, will also be playing our lead characters. Erin is an opera singer from Minnesota. Carlo was a Captain of the Carabinieri, the Italian national Police Force, heading investigations against violent crimes, mafia and domestic terrorism. Graciously, they have poured their life experience into the script. Our resilient producer, Gretchen Landau, of Sara Terry’s FOLK and Francis Ford Coppola’s DISTANT VISION. Our extraordinarily gifted cinematographer, Karsten Hose — if you have a favorite commercial, he’s probably shot it. And me… from the world of feature films (BONNEVILLE, MOLLY MOON).
We’ve been through several passes of the script as a team and it has already proven rewarding, hysterical (the smart ass quotient in this group is through the roof) and tremendously productive. Everyone is so open to playing and experimentation… no rules … only creating the best story using the most madcap scenarios possible.
Actor-wise, we will surround Erin and Carlo with familiar faces from the Los Angeles comedy scene, casting as color and gender blind as possible — we will turn every given opportunity upside down. Our plan is to workshop the script and take the results of the workshop straight into production this Fall 2017.
I am very eager to explore the world of small format — and, above all, HAVE FUN. Savage ninja battles, hurricanes in restaurants generated by the fervent Cossak Dance of Death and brilliant Bollywood spectacles are all fine and dandy in big budget features — the challenge (which we all wholeheartedly embrace) is how to effectively and affordably bring a blockbuster feel to a small budget, small format world.
Comedy is serious business, and Erin and Carlo’s earnestness (both as writers and actors) will create a solid anchor for the mad, suspenseful world that we will create. How much fabulousness we can squeeze into a small format web series? With this team… A LOT. - Christopher N Rowley, Director

CARLO CARERE is a screenwriter, published novelist and actor. Formerly, he was a Captain of the Carabinieri, the Italian equivalent of the FBI, for 12 years, where he investigated mafia, terrorism and violent crimes. He attended the glorious Military Academy, "Nunziatella." One of his scripts, E-Ghost, was acquired by Isabella Ragona (Stranded, Forsaken) of Moving Pictures Media and will be executive-produced by James D. Brubaker (Chef, Liar, Liar, Rocky III.) As an actor, after moving to Los Angeles from Rome, where he was a regular on popular Italian TV shows, he most recently worked with Francis Ford Coppola in his latest project, Distant Vision.
ERIN CARERE is a screenwriter, actress and real-life glass-shattering singer. She studied music at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music (singing Broadway and opera), toured the country and Europe as a solo artist and singer/songwriter (including playing SXSW and winning awards.) As an actress, she most recently booked a series regular role as LA Police Detective Jo Frazier in a new narrative-procedural hybrid, Emergency: LA. Spy v Spia is her dream come true! She always wanted to have her own show, somewhere between I Love Lucy, Moonlighting, and any Barbra Streisand musical.
CHRISTOPHER N ROWLEY is a writer and filmmaker based between London, New York and Los Angeles. After earning his MFA from the USC School Of Cinematic Arts, he made his feature directing debut in 2006 with Bonneville, an ensemble road movie. Rowley directed and co-created the original story for the film, which attracted a dazzling cast including Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen, Tom Skerritt and Christine Baranski.
His most recent family fantasy movie Molly Moon: The Incredible Hypnotist, based on the bestselling children’s book series, is due out this winter. The film features Emily Watson, Dominic Monaghan, Lesley Manville, Celia Imrie, Joan Collins and newcomer 12 year-old Raffey Cassidy who went from playing Molly to a leading role in Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland for Disney.
Rowley currently has several features, television series and a Broadway musical in development; he also works as a script polisher and story consultant.
GRETCHEN LANDAU a producer and marketing specialist who has been producing documentary and narrative films over the past decade. In July (2016), she served as production supervisor for Academy Award winner, Francis Ford Coppola's experimental film workshop, DISTANT VISION. Producing credits include a series of short films (BAD FOR THE BOATS, Ben Lear, THE MORNING AFTER, Joe Boothe) with producing partners Mindy Cohn and Michael Allen (2017), the documentary FOLK (2013) directed by Sara Terry and FEMINISTS: What were they thinking? with director Johanna Demetrakas - a documentary that is in post production now. Landau is developing several new film and television projects with director Christopher N Rowley (Bonneville, Molly Moon) for Drop of Water Productions. She is the co-founder of Impact Squared Productions, a social media marketing company geared towards the arts and entertainment industry. Previously, Gretchen was a media sales and marketing strategist for pop culture giants Disney, ABC, ESPN and MTV. In the early '90's she began her career as an on-air music radio personality and then went on to start the nation’s first Spanish Talk Radio network.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge (which we all wholeheartedly embrace), aside from raising money, is how to effectively and affordably bring a blockbuster feel to a small budget, small format world. Our team is more than qualified to tackle this with a flexible vengeance — we are all veterans from the industry — drawn together by decency and a sense of humor — it’s about pre-planning, communication and making decisions — knowing what we need while allowing for accidental magic to sneak in.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
