Board Simple is a website (boardsimple.net) dedicated to making board gaming accessible to everyone. We are building Board Simple to be usable from everything to a desktop computer right down to your smartphone.
New to the Game? Check Out Our Video Guides.
Check out our guide for Agricola All Creatures Big and Small for an example.
Need a Refresher? Check Out Our Cheat Sheets.
The Cheat Sheets act as a quick reference for how to play the game without having to re-watch the videos. There are icons a player can hover over with info on each image
Need a Definition? Look to the Glossary.
The glossary aims to define all of the confusing terms, and when applicable will also provide an image to show you the game component being referenced.
Got Something to Say? Discuss It with the Community.
This will be a place to discuss the games with other enthusiasts. We are still working to get the community and discussion going, but it will go live by the end of this campaign.
The main cost of this site will be the games. We are aiming to be able to produce 4 video guides a month. Our plan is to have a drawing on the site to give games back to the community members that use the site.
Our goal in the future is for Board Simple to be popular enough that we can strike a deal with game publishers to get copies of games. It will take some time to get there though, so we need to use Kickstarter to get started.
Hosting the website will be a recurring monthly cost. We have budgeted for growth, so as long as our funding target is met we won't have any issues here.
We need a video camera to make better quality videos. Some of our initial videos were dark and lacked ability to give good detail. We are currently borrowing a camera, but need to get our own.
We really need to build a set that has proper lighting and a large enough surface to lay out a game board + components without things falling on the floor or having to be shifted to make space.
We personally think that Board Simple is an awesome idea and something that will greatly benefit the board gaming community by making games approachable for everyone. But, being the creators, we are obviously biased.
We are new to creating guide videos and materials. We've come a long way, but we are sure the community will have lots of input on things to change, things to add, etc. So, Season 1 is sort of a trial period designed to gauge interest in the site, solidify our techniques and get everything running smoothly. We'll undoubtedly make mistakes along the way, but we are committed to fixing and learning from them.
Season 1 is set to be 6 months long, with 1 new video per week. That will result in at least 24 guides being created. By the end of Season 1 we will know if this is a solid, useful idea and the process will be nailed down to produce the best quality videos possible.
We want our supporters to get recognition for their support. Everyone who backs us will have their Kickstarter avatar and username added to a special page on the site called the "Wall of Backers".
Additionally, backers at higher levels will receive distinctive community badges. The badges will display prominently on your profile and also with your user information everywhere you post. We want to make sure everyone knows you were there from day one and believed in BoardSimple.
Additionally, communities need moderators to keep everything in line. Typically, moderators would emerge from the community once it is established, but we wanted to offer a limited number of backers the opportunity to get moderator privileges from the start. We've priced this reward pretty high at $100, but we want to make sure that anyone backing at this level is serious about the role.
If the Kickstarter community has ideas for rewards, we would definitely love to hear them!
Any additional funding that we receive will be used to acquire more games and generally support the operation of BoardSimple. If we reach certain levels we will be able to guarantee a certain number of additional guides.
At $6,000 Season 1 Becomes a full year!
If we reach $6,000 it will tell us that the community likes what we've done so far and wants to see more. As such, we will be able to extend Season 1 out to a full year with a guarantee of at least 48 game guides.
If we get above $6,000 we will evaluate additional options, likely including more than 4 games a month. We are also open to your input!
We have a number of ideas for ways to make Board Simple self sustaining moving forward including working with local game shops, funding drives, gamification of the community and so on. We will evaluate these as we move forward, and we also hope to get your feedback since this site is ultimately for the community.
We really want to get the community involved. One of our visions is for the community to be able to produce cheat sheets and glossaries for games. This will enable us to have more game guides on the site in a lot shorter period of time than we could manage on our own.
We tried to figure out how to put ourselves into the video, but there didn't seem to be a natural transition. We are a couple of board gaming, bicycle riding, outdoorsy 20 somethings from Madison, WI. We lead pretty busy lives and have noticed that as time goes on, it's harder and harder for us to sit down and play games as much as we'd like. A lot of the trouble is the complexity of figuring out new games or remembering how to play old ones, and that's what gave us the idea to create Board Simple!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk to BoardSimple, beyond a complete lack of interest, would be for site traffic to explode to levels that we can't financially support. We've tested the website and our current server setup using blitz.io and know that we can support over 9 million hits per day without breaking a sweat, so we aren't too worried on the traffic front.
We have been working on this site for long enough that we are comfortable with our target of 4 games a month. Joel has been running and creating websites for many years, including sites and services for large companies, so we are not lacking the time or the technical ability to keep BoardSimple going.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
