About this project
Getting the last bit of lotion out of the lotion bottle is frustrating and messy, and there is a lot left in the bottle when the pump stops working. Consumer Reports says that 17%-25% of the contents are left inside the bottle when the pump stops functioning properly.
The Zero Waste Cap provides a simple solution. It’s designed to easily thread on the necks of lotion bottles you find at local stores. Zero Waste Cap transforms a lotion pump bottle into one with a flip top cap that can be balanced upside down on the cap. Once sitting upside down gravity pulls the lotion toward the cap so it’s easy to remove. Stop banging, hitting, and shaking the bottle when the pump stops working, simply attach the Zero Waste Cap onto your favorite lotion bottle and moisturize with ease.
HOW TO USE
1. Remove the pump from the bottle when ready and attach the Zero Waste Cap onto the bottle.
2. Flip the bottle upside down.
3. The lotion settles to the bottom and it's easy to remove.
Zero Waste Cap comes with adapters you can easily swap out to fit on different lotion bottles. Changing adapters is easy.
To change the adapters, squeeze the tabs on the adapter and pull to detach from base (photo 2). Then, snap in another one (photo 3).
Zero Waste Cap is designed to work with lotion bottles you can find at local stores. Zero Waste Cap will work with all bottles shown and more.
Amy: My lotion bottle and I have a love and hate relationship. Taking care of my dry skin is a priority even with my busy schedule. I love lotion bottle with a pump. It’s convenient and easy to use. However, after some time, I press on the pump and nothing comes out. Typically, at this point, I will shake the bottle a few times, and a couple more drops of the lotion will come out when I press on the pump again. This routine will work for another day or two. Then, I will remove the pump from the bottle and bang the bottle against my hand. Great! I get the lotion I want. Except I end up making a big mess and get more than I need.
One day, I finally said "Enough is enough." I look over to my husband, who is a product designer, and asked "Can you design something so I don't have to deal with this anymore?"
Since that day…
We have done many rounds of sketches and drawing:
Then we prototyped and tested many different concepts.
After refining the chosen direction we now have a patented design and a prototype that we use daily, and it works great.
Please support our project so we can send you a Zero Waste Cap!

Risks and challenges
We anticipate that some tweaks will be needed to improve the fit and snapping after initial tooling. Given our experience as designers, we're confident we will be able to make the necessary changes to make the product function well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
