This buckle was originally created using a 3D printing process. I made it for myself because it was cool and quite simply, I just wanted it. After a couple failed 3D plastic prototypes, I printed the final version in steel. It worked perfectly, and I wear it all the time.
Some friends asked me where I got it - and I told them the story, and that got me thinking that other people might want one too. I asked around some coding communities and the unanimous response was: “Yes, Please!” and here we are now.
What I will be using the money for:
I need to cover the cost of creating a mould, then the casting, plating and delivery of the finished buckles.
This is a loop and hook style belt buckle made with a zinc alloy and plated in bronze. Other platings such as black, gold or silver may be offered as a stretch goal. Simply attach it to your belt and you’re all set to go.
Currently, I'm in contact with die-casting factories, both here in Canada as well as overseas. I want the buckles to be well made and delivered quickly. As soon as I can I’ll give the manufacturers the go-ahead to start production. After that, it can take up to 20 days for the moulds to be made and then another couple of weeks for casting, plating and shipping. I estimate that this entire process will take about ninety days. I will do my best to get these in your hands as soon as possible, shipping them out as I receive the finished buckles.
This project does not include a belt - this is another possible stretch goal.
I am offering a early bird special that includes free shipping. Get them while they last!
BONUS: The 3D Print File (.stl)
I've gotten a lot of interest about the original file for the buckle- so now it's available for downloading from here. If you are a hacker / maker type, you can open and play with the file. Please let me know if you do make anything- I'd love to see it!
October 9th update:
- The buckles will be made in Canada by a environmentally-friendly manufacturer that guarantees they will be 100% lead free.
- We are now aiming to get your pledges shipped to you before the holiday season.
- All pledges now include 3 plating options. Bronze, copper or nickel. At the end of the Kickstarter campaign, you will receive a questionnaire where you can indicate your colour preferences.
Risks and challenges
Getting a mould created (even a relatively simple one like this), can be finicky and I need to make sure it’s done right. I have a few friends in the product development industry that have pointed me in the right direction, and I am sure that I can transfer my 3D rendering into a physical mould.
I don't expect any issue with the production, however there is a risk that it will take longer than estimated. If that occurs, I will keep you updated.
This will take time depending on the manufacturer and their location. It is possible that it will take longer than originally predicted. I’ll keep you in the loop, and get your buckle to you as soon as I can - no one wants to see your droopy pants.
