Holy hell- thank you SO MUCH to everyone who pledged and sent this project over the goal! I am touched, and super excited to bring you the goods! Now that the goal has been exceeded, any additional funds will go into making another music video. All three of my videos have been tiny masterpieces, and I would love to work on another one and premiere it before the double album is released! Yay!!! So many hearts to you all.
People say that an artist has their whole life to make their debut, and then they have two years to make a follow-up. I released my first album in 2012, and since taken my time with writing new material. I didn't rush or force anything. I waited for inspired moments before I put pen to paper, and meticulously crafted each melody. As a result, I have ten beautiful songs I'm proud of that need to get out there for the world to hear.
I originally set out to make a sort of "concept" album inspired by the great American South. But while some of the songs are partially about stories I heard or experiences I had in that part of the country, this batch of material took on a different shape from what I had intended. I have been through a lot these past two years- and the songs reflect that journey. The new material is in some ways a departure from my debut- while the themes may be familiar to anyone who has taken an interest in my previous music, I've pushed myself outside of my comfort zone- most noticeably so by utilizing the autoharp for songwriting.
For years now, I've been performing many cover songs beloved by fans. Due to the high volume of requests I received from so many of you, I decided it pertinent to record them whenever I did begin to work on a second album. Doug Jenkins surprised me by offering to help make both of these projects- so I will be venturing to the northwest this summer to work with a cluster of fantastic musicians on this ambitious venture.
However, this can only happen with your help- we are making TWO records, and the cost of doing so is great. I have no record label, nor help from anyone in the music industry. I have, however, come a long way since I began touring four years ago, and my fan base is not only steadily growing but mind-blowingly supportive. I've been enabled BY YOU to create and perform music full time, year-round, without the "industry". That is a relationship I don't take for granted.
THANK YOU for being so amazing! I am excited to make (a lot of) new music for you.
UPDATE: I've had a couple of people ask what a digipak is ($25 reward). This particular digipak is simply a double album (both the sophomore record and the covers record) in cd form, in eco-friendly packaging. :)
ESTIMATED BUDGET BREAKDOWN
Orchestrating, studio time, mixing, payment for musicians - $10k
Mastering - $500
Mechanical License Fees (depends on # of backers) - up to $1k
Replication of Double CD digipacks - $3500
Graphic design & album artwork - $2k
Cost to manufacture new merch, cover artist supplies - $3k
Kickstarter fee (5% of project's total) - $1k
Amazon Payments fee (3-5% of project's total) - up to $1k
TOTAL - $22k
I'm asking for what I believe will be the minimum to finish these two records. If by chance I exceed the goal, every dollar pledged will go right back into making music- additional funds would allow for a new music video, more new merch items to be made (vinyl?!?!), or a plane ticket for a European tour- which is my goal for this fall.
* Every backer pledging $100 or more will receive a "thank you" in the liner notes, as well as a customized "thanks" on Instagram.

Risks and challenges
I know from firsthand experience that there are unforeseeable challenges one meets with crowd funding and delivering the rewards. Last year, I moved around a lot and didn't have a stable home, so it took longer than I'd hoped to deliver some of the goodies. Rest assured I'm not only staying put this year, but you'll be kept in the loop and up to speed with fun backer-only updates throughout the campaign and until the albums have been delivered!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
