About

As the mixture of cold Atlantic water and course sand in your mouth brings you back from unconsciousness, the wreckage of a boat’s hull that surrounds you, leads you to assume a solitary assumption; your vessel has been torn apart by the submerged rocks. The secrets of the island must be uncovered if you are ever going to find a way off. Where is everyone; is the island really uninhabited; what is lurking within the isolated caves?

Montague’s Mount is a first person psychological thriller, taking the player on a captivating ride through isolation, desolation and one man's tortured mind all set against the bleakness of an isolated Irish island; it is one man’s journey to discover what has happened, both to him and the island he is on. Having woken up on a beach surrounded by the wreckage of a boat, his only assumption is that he is a fisherman whose boat has been run aground and destroyed on the rocks.

The story is told via narration with the player progressing through exploration and puzzle solving.

The game is set against the backdrop of Ireland. Having lived in Ireland for 10 years I am passionate about showing its landscape. The game’s story is of isolation and desolation and nowhere is more desolate than an Irish Island (wind swept and raining every day). Ireland suits this game perfectly.

As with episode 1 we are embracing the Irish language as much as we can.

This Kickstarter is predominantly for the development of the second and final episode of Montague’s Mount. Ultimately the game will be sold as a single product, not two separate episodes, so it also makes sense to revisit episode 1 to bring it into line with episode 2; so some of the money will be used for this. This episode 1 redux will include the graphics engine upgrades, bug fixes, new content and revised puzzles, and official controller support. We have also listened to the community about what they liked/didn’t like about current episode 1, and with this redux we will do our best to accommodate as many wishes as possible.

The majority of the costs are solely my development time for Episode 2. All the story elements have already been written, as have the sketching out of the various puzzles needed for Episode 2. Whilst there will been the need to create additional art assets, a lot of these will be coming across from Episode 1. All new materials will have to be created as the engine upgrade (Unity 5 or UE4 [a stretch goal to be announced as the project progresses] depending on funding raised) will force the change to a Physically Based Shading lighting system; an art specialist will be consulted on this to make sure the very best results are obtained.

The backstory script has already been outlined. Additional time will be required to polish this ready to enter into the studio for the final recording using the actors.

PolyPusher Studios are an independent games development studio based in County Donegal, Ireland. Formed in 2012, its owner and sole full-time developer, Matthew Clifton, is not short of IT and Games Development experience having worked in the industry for 20+ years.

Having worked across many IT sectors, with all languages from COBOL to C++ and holding positions ranging from the humble Developer to Departmental Manager, Matthew’s real love has always been Game Development. With that in mind, he along with his wife, formed PolyPusher Studios with the aim of producing original titles that would challenge the thoughts of the player.

Matthew Clifton holds a BSc in Computing with Games Development from the Letterkenny Institute of Technology and won the coveted Jonathan Campbell prize.

Q. I’ve already bought Montague’s Mount Episode 1… will I need to buy it again upon release?  

A. When this project is completed there will be a single Montague’s Mount game and the original Episode 1 will cease to exist. A reduced cost upgrade option will be made available for those people who originally purchased Episode 1, so in effect they will only be ‘paying’ for Episode 2.  

Q. Where will the game be available from?  

A. The Steam store will be the main digital distribution platform initially. Additional portals and our website will also make the game available where possible. We will also be offering purchase of a DRM-Free version via our own website and other portals that will take it.

Q. Will there be a console version?  

A. Yes, we are hoping this will be possible. Polypusher Studios are development partners with both Microsoft and Sony so I can’t see why there couldn’t be a console version down the line.  

Q. Will MM be supporting any VR technologies? (i.e Oculus or HTC Vive)

A. Not with the initial release but we are hoping to evaluate these shortly after. These will be added as a stretch goal if our initial funding amount is reached.

 

These will include an additional engine upgrade to Unreal Engine 4 (an upgrade of an upgrade we would love to do!), plus others!

We will announce these as the Kickstarter campaign progresses and our initial goal is nearer to being reached.

 

Risks and challenges

Failing some kind of global catastrophe, Montague’s Mount is going to get made.

But as you all know, unexpected setbacks can happen at any time that could place a spanner in the works. Having been in the IT industry for many years we know that computers sometimes fail, 3rd party software ceases to be maintained, or even the good old illness can creep up on you.

That said, I am a dedicated developer who works long hours at making Montague’s Mount and will continue to be just that.

With Episode 1 being previously completed I have a good understanding of the cost and times involved for things like voice over creation etc. The majority of the art is already in place. The risks involved with getting this final episode made and the game combined into a single final release are relatively low.
