UPDATE: GOAL ACHIEVED!!!
We've officially met the goal, thank you so much everyone!!! This is so so awesome.
Since we're very near to the end, I'd like to stress to newcomers that pretty much everything offered here is a Kickstarter exclusive, which means it'll never be available again! And the clock is ticking...
Below is a clip of 'Bergamot Morning', the first track I've been working on. I'll keep it here until the campaign's concluded!
Also, we've added 5 more 'LET ALEX MAKE YOU A PERSONALIZED VIDEO OF YOUR FAVORITE SONG' rewards, because we've had a few more requests for those...
Again... Thank you!!!
I’m suuuper excited to share with you the possibility of creating a very special, very unusual, Sea Wolf album that I’d like to do just for you. As I say in the video, people have been asking me to do a more stripped down album for years, and now that I’ve officially fulfilled my label contract, and until I decide on a home for the next ‘official Sea Wolf album, I can do ANYTHING I want. And what I want to do is make this album!
There won’t be any label marketing or publicity push for this album. It’s meant to be a bonus for all of you who are already Sea Wolf fans (though newbies to the band are more than welcome to join in). Doing this album without a record label means that there’s no advance to pay for recording, and nobody to foot the bill for all of the artwork, design, manufacturing, shipping, personnel costs etc..
And that’s where YOU come in.
Because all of you can show your support of Sea Wolf by acting in place of a record label and making this album happen. All you have to do is pre-order the album or get some of the amazing, exclusive stuff we’re offering here as rewards. Stuff that we think you’d want anyway! Yay! In fact, we hope you’ll be so excited about the rewards we’re offering, that you might even forget that along with whatever you purchase, and the warm-and-fuzzy feeling of joy from directly supported the music you love, you will also eventually be rewarded with a new album of Sea Wolf music well before the next ‘official’ release. Win win and win!
So, onto the good stuff.
Below you’ll find more info on this campaign, the music-to-be, details of certain rewards and some FAQ’s. And before you purchase anything, I highly recommend reading the section below about REWARDS + HOW TO GET THEM.
Thank you so much, in advance. I can’t tell you how excited I am to make some new music with, and for, all of you.
Now... Let’s make an album together!
Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, which means that if we don’t meet our goal, we don’t get anything. I don’t get to make this extra special album, and you won’t get to have it, or get any of these amazing rewards. So, bare minimum, we HAVE TO meet our goal.
And why ‘bare minimum’? Because the fundraising goal here is actually quite a bit less than what’s ideal. A lot of this money goes away immediately after rewards design, manufacturing, shipping, Kickstarter commissions and taxes. So we’re actually shooting to far exceed the goal so that we’ll have more resources at our disposal to make everything about this album as awesome as possible. Because this is the case, we’ve done our best to make the awards as enticing as possible, so that you won’t want to miss the opportunity to get them.
For those of you who aren’t that familiar with how Kickstarter works, the Rewards are the items we’re 'selling' in order to raise funds. You can find all of the Rewards in the column to the right.
You can either pay the exact amount and get the reward you want or you can pay more and we’ll consider the rest a donation. Or, if you want to purchase more than one reward (and of course you do), see the instructions in the next section.
With the exception of the album itself, all of the Rewards will be Kickstarter exclusives, which means they will only be available here on Kickstarter during the 45 days of the campaign. After the campaign is over, they will never be available again.
If you want more details and images on some of the less self explanatory Rewards, you’ll find those in the MORE REWARDS DETAILS section further below.
* If you have further questions about any of the rewards, you can email us at email@example.com
HOW TO PLEDGE FOR MORE THAN ONE REWARD
For whatever reason, Kickstarter won't allow you to claim more than one reward when pledging money to one of their campaigns. Don't worry though, we've figured a way around that. Here's what you do:
- Decide what you want
- Add up the total cost of all those items
- Pledge that amount of money
- Choose the most expensive reward out of all of the rewards you want, and click continue
- Once you've finalized the purchase, let us know via direct messaging (or click "Contact Me" in my profile) which other rewards you want to use that extra money for
- We send you everything you paid for!
* if you underestimate the cost of the exclusives, we will cut out the cheapest exclusive and consider the remainder a donation. If you overestimate the cost of the exclusives, we’ll also consider the remainder a donation.
The album itself is going to be a special, sweet-ass Kickstarter version, and you’ll only be able to get it here.
I say ‘version’ because even though we’re not currently planning on releasing it beyond this campaign, I do want to leave that door open...just in case. But I really want backers to get an extra fancy, I-had-it-before-you-did, Kickstarter version of the album, so if someday we do choose to release it again, the layout of the artwork, and the overall design and packaging will be very different than the version we’re going to do here.
Since this stripped-down album is going to be a kind of nod to the early Sea Wolf days, it only made sense to have my close friend, artist James Sterling Pitt, who did the artwork for the debut EP Get to the River Before it Runs Too Low and first album Leaves in the River, do the artwork again for this album.
The artwork will come together as the album itself comes together (you'll see all that on the blog) but you can get a sense of what it will look like by seeing what his work is all about these days here.
James is going to be doing one of his 22”x30” graphite and watercolor drawings (see example below) specifically for this album. Typically these drawings take a month to complete, because each one is a kind of visual archive of memories over a given period of time. James will be listening to the new album during the time he is working on the drawing, which will influence his memories of that time, and the drawing itself.
James’ star is rising fast. His most recent show at the prestigious Eli Ridgeway Gallery in San Francisco was a huge success, he is beginning to show his work across the U.S. and into Europe, and magazines like Art Forum are taking notice. So not only is this an opportunity to get something that you will never be able to get again–original Sea Wolf album artwork–but it’s also the opportunity to get some very fine work from a fantastic up and coming artist.
*If you are interested in purchasing the original artwork, but have questions before you do so, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
The descriptions below are for things we wanted to show you pictures of and tell you a little bit more about. To see what other goodies the Rewards below include, see the corresponding Reward's full description in the column to the right.
Please note that many of the rewards, like the Demo EP, the exclusive Posters and shirts, etc. are also available in a variety of bundles, and are also included on other select rewards.
PLEDGE $1 OR MORE - PRIVATE BLOG
Get INSTANT access to a very special, backer-exclusive PRIVATE BLOG with every pledge. You can see a taste of what this will look like at the top of the page under the "Updates" tab. But, almost of all of what's really up there you won't be able to see until you become a supporter of the project.
In the blog I’ll be posting audio, video, photo and text tidbits from the studio as the album progresses. I’ll keep you up to speed on the progress of JSP’s artwork as well as the process of shaping it into album art with our designer. I’ll post images and updates of the process of fulfilling the rewards. I’ll even post lots of extra stuff like playlists of what I’ve been listening to, old unreleased Sea Wolf photos, unreleased demos, and anything else I think you might be interested in. Plus you can post comments and ask me questions right there on the blog.
So this isn’t just a blog, it’s a chance to get something far beyond whatever it is you choose to buy here. This is access. To me, to Sea Wolf and to the process of creating an album. And you'll get it for FREE just as a thank you for partnering with me to make this record.
* For supporters, you'll get an email every time I put up a new blog post, so you won't have to keep checking back here to see what we're up to.
* While you won't be able to join the blog once the campaign has ended, I'll keep posting updates up until the album is finished and all the rewards have been fulfilled
PLEDGE $5 OR MORE - DEMO EP
We know you’ll be anxious to hear this, so we’re going to email download codes to backers who’ve scored the Demo EP as soon as the campaign is FUNDED (more details in the FAQ’s), so all the more reason to get this thing funded quickly! Now, a little bit about it...
My good friend, the post-classical composer Dustin O’Halloran took a very early interest in Sea Wolf, and in 2004 I had the honor of recording the very first Sea Wolf demos with him at the helm. It was rudimentary–two dudes with a laptop recording in the space the size of a walk-in closet–but it got the job done and helped set me on the path to where I am today. We recorded 3 songs...
‘Neutral Ground’, which wound up being largely unchanged when it found it’s way on the first album. An experimental version of ‘Leaves in the River’ that is VERY different from the album version. And a song that never found it’s way onto a release called ‘What You’re Really Thinking’, that features me experimenting with various field recordings, including that of a Pacific Northwest train.
I burned these songs onto a bunch of CD’s, hand screened some CD sleeves, and sold them at the first dozen or so Sea Wolf shows. Those demos captured my early interest in pairing intimate, folk-tinged song craft with textural atmospherics. While the CD’s are long gone, I thought that in the spirit of doing a new stripped down-album, it made perfect sense to offer this original stripped-down Demo EP as a digital download exclusively here on this Kickstarter campaign.
Trust me. You want this, you need this, and you should get it RIGHT NOW.
THE ORIGINAL HAND-MADE DEMO EP CD
PLEDGE $9 OR MORE - BLUE PATCH (ALSO ABOUT THE GOLDEN PATCH)
We’ve designed a super sweet new S.W. insignia, and we will be doing two super sweet iron-on patches featuring those insignia’s exclusively for this campaign.
The Blue Patch doesn’t do anything special, other than make you look cool. We won’t be making these again though, so now’s your only chance to get one.
PLEDGE $30 OR MORE - KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE POSTER
We’re also doing a limited, numbered, hand screened run of Kickstarter exclusive posters for this campaign. They will be made to order, so once the campaign is over, you’ll never be able to get this poster again.
But that’s not all. Everyone who purchases the THANK YOU CREDIT Reward or a Reward that is $2,500 or more will receive a ‘Thank You’ version of the poster, signed by me. This means YOUR NAME will be thanked, right there on the poster!
PLEDGE $30 OR MORE - ALBUM RELEASE PARTY AT THE MASONIC LODGE IN LOS ANGELES
Located in the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery the Masonic Lodge is a beautiful venue that we think is the perfect intimate setting for the album release party for this stripped-down album. And we'd like to invite you to be a part of it. See more details in the Reward itself, but here's a pic to get a sense of the setting for this exclusive event!
THE MASONIC LODGE!
PLEDGE $30 OR MORE - KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE T-SHIRT
This is a limited, Kickstarter exclusive T-shirt. This shirt and design will never be available again. Printed on American Apparel shirts. You choose your size and style. Men’s XS-2XL or women’s XS-XL.
I have to say, this might be my favorite Sea Wolf shirt ever. It is BAD ASS. It’s almost a shame that it’ll never be available again after this campaign. So get it while you can!
PLEDGE $110 OR MORE - ALBUM COVER LITHOGRAPHS
What’s a Lithograph? To quote directly from Wikipedia:
“In modern Lithography, the image is made of a polymer coating applied to a flexible aluminum plate. To print an image lithographically, the flat surface of the stone plate is roughened slightly—etched—and divided into hydrophilic regions that accept a film of water, and thereby repel the greasy ink...” etc.
I don’t really know what this means either. I just know that they are rad. Plain and simple, it’s a really really nice print. And in this day and age when anyone can dash off a digital color print, isn’t it really nice to have something that has the texture and imperfections of something handmade?
Yes it is. Especially if it’s signed by me. Which it will be.
PLEDGE $1,500 OR MORE - VINTAGE GUITAR USED BY ALEX FOR THE STRIPPED-DOWN ALBUM
I like to use vintage small body Stella, Silvertone, Harmony, and Kay guitars sometimes when I’m recording and writing. They have this really woody, kind of boxy sound that has a lot of character. Listen to the song “Spirit Horse” from White Water, White Bloom as an example. The one I used on that song is very prominent in the intro.
The reward description pretty much says everything else, but email us at email@example.com if you have more questions.
Here are some pics of examples of the types of guitars I'll be using, and that you will then get to own.
PLEDGE $2,500 OR MORE - RECORD A SONG WITH ABC + THANK YOU CREDIT + MORE
Several years ago, I recorded the first Sea Wolf album ‘Leaves in the River’ on a laptop with minimal gear in my own home studio. I don’t live there anymore, but I’ve kept the space, so now the space is 100% Sea Wolf studio. It’s where I write, rehearse and record and do almost everything else Sea Wolf related.
Though the gear is still minimal, I produced and recorded the latest Sea Wolf album ‘Old World Romance’ there and that record sounds pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. So this is an opportunity not only to work with me and have me give you tips on how to improve your song, but to also learn how to make great sounding recordings, on your own, with minimal gear.
One day isn’t always enough time to record a full song, so I’ll want to hear a demo of your song and do some pre-production planning with you on the phone to make sure we’re well prepared by the time you come in. No matter how far we get with the song, we’ll send you home at the end of the day with a decent board mix, the Pro Tools files and a plan for what you’ll need to do next!
*before you purchase this reward, we’ll probably want to figure out some logistics, so please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
PLEDGE $3,500 OR MORE - BE ON THE ALBUM + PLAYER & THANK YOU CREDIT + MORE
Make this album with me. LITERALLY. I want you to come to the Sea Wolf studio one day this November and we’ll record you doing something for one of the songs on the new album. You don’t have to play an instrument, and even if you do, you don’t have to be good. I will find a way to include you on the song. I will Instagram a pic of you recording your part. Once you we get a take I am satisfied with, you will get to relax and hang out with us in the studio for the rest of the day as we do whatever else it is we need to do. You will get credit for what you did on the album. You will be in Sea Wolf for a day. Plus you’ll gets tons of shwag (see the reward for what else you’ll get).
*we’re going to do this in November or early December, but we’ll work out a specific date that works for both of us. Email us with any questions: email@example.com
PLEDGE $10,000 OR MORE - YOUR OWN PRIVATE FULL-BAND CONCERT + THANK YOU CREDIT + MUCH MORE
The ultimate reward. Sea Wolf ‘Classic’ (drums, bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keys, and cello!!!) will come to you and give you and your friends a private, fully electric Sea Wolf show. We’ll play our full set and we’ll also play any Sea Wolf songs you request, plus one cover song of your choice. And after the show, we’ll hang out with you and your friends for the rest of the night.
And, we want to make it easy on you. All you have to do is let us know the time, the place, and to let your neighbors know you’re having a party and that it’s going to be LOUD, and we’ll do the rest.
There are a few items to let you know before purchasing this reward:
- While the availability for this reward is set for October, this just means our availability starts in October. We’re going to be busy, so we’ll need to set a date that works for you and for us, between October 2013 - March 2014.
- We are allotting a portion of the award money for the rental of a PA, lighting, staging, etc. so that you don’t have to worry about it. BUT, if you want us to perform in a venue, we will cover any production costs up to that amount, but any production costs beyond that amount will be your responsibility to cover. If this could apply to your situation, please email us before purchase for exact amount.
- This price is limited to the greater Los Angeles area. If you are interested in having Sea Wolf play outside of the LA area, additional travel expenses, accommodations, and personnel expenses will be your responsibility to cover.
- Please email us before purchasing this reward! firstname.lastname@example.org

Risks and challenges
Illness, earthquake, fire, computer damage, car accident/other injury, amnesia, dementia, assassination, zombie apocalypse. In any of these cases, this would only delay the fulfillment of this project. Even in the event of my demise, I've saved my stem cells and am prepared to clone myself in order to finish the album.
Beyond the craziness of what this world can throw at you however, collectively my team and I have decades of experience releasing albums, and are extremely confident in our ability to see this through. Sure, there may be some speed bumps along the way, but as long as this project is successfully funded, this album will definitely be happening.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
