The Deeno Story has certainly been a roller coaster ride , up and down like Deeno with his rocket boosters! It all began with the Founder, Ryan Donaghy, a former employee of Procter & Gamble (Oral B/ Braun) spending 2 years developing an electric toothbrush for adults, the most stylish and slimmest toothbrush in the world: T.Brush. After a bid to raise money on the British version of Shark Tank, Dragons Den UK, Ryan’s strong performance in ‘the Den’, was not enough to convince the Dragons to part with £175k. Following this was an unsuccessful Kickstarter in 2015, raising only $75,000, a decent performance but not enough to achieve the goal.
At that point it seemed, all was but lost, and Ryan decided to accept an exciting career opportunity and a move to Brazil. It was here that he met the lovely Esther Santos, a Dentist from Sao Paulo. Coincidentally, it was the many discussions about the worrying state of childrens' teeth in her clinics, and their poor dental habits, that brought about the idea of Deeno… or at least the mission to find a way to improve it!!
The eureka moment happened, when Ryan was working on a collaboration with an energy drink and the world’s biggest game launch at the time, using gamification and reward i.e. for every can sold, the customer would receive special VIP benefits within the game. Esther immediately saw the benefits this would bring to kids if introduced as part of their daily routines through a toothbrush. Already, her guidance to mums was to introduce games and videos to encourage their children to brush at least twice per day for two minutes.
A few months later, January 2016, Ryan was drinking a pint of Guinness in a bar in downtown New York City. Ryan’s ears were perked up when he heard the melodic words of Brazilian Portuguese in the table next to him. Immediately sparking up a conversation with Gustavo and Beto, the owners of a very well established App and software development company (Trinca Ltd) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, the natural brainstorming of like-minded creative individuals began; continuing until the wee hours of the very cold January morning.
They loved the idea of using technology and gamification to improve the dental health of the younger generation; and together that evening, the two Brazilians (Three if you include Dr. Esther) and an Irishman committed to create the ultimate toothbrush and app for kids. Henceforth was the birth of Deeno.
Using the idea of gamification including a reward system, which has been such a successful method in education, business and entertainment for several years, we knew if anything was going to engage kids, it would be through this. It was by pure chance Deeno the dinosaur was created. An available domain name and trademark, then a few jumps & bumps and some smart play on wording later, the concept and the Deeno-saur game was invented. This was absolutely perfect, it’s common knowledge dinosaurs are the most popular kids character/ animal. This was going to be SO FUN!
The first step was to turn Deeno into an animated character. With the help of the renowned Brazilian street artist Salomao Piraja, we created the first sketches of the cute purple dinosaur you know and love. The brief was very simple, create a dinosaur character that would be appealing to kids of all genders and be easily animated in a digital way. Through the whirlwind of character creation…Deeno was a baby, Deeno was a girl, Deeno was a boy, Deeno went to the top of a tree, Deeno went to the bottom of the sea…
Salomao did the most amazing job, but we weren’t quite there yet… the concepts were super cool…. But not very child friendly nor could they easily be translated to a digital version due to the amount of details involved… So the sketches were sent to Trinca and their creative digital team took the reins, transforming the orginial Deeno to the cute loveable purple friend in the Deeno APP. Taking the inspiration from one of the most downloaded game Apps ever POU (the app made a global Top 5 Paid iOS Apps list in 2013, in its peak reached between 260-320,000 free downloads a day on Android, and achieved #1 in the iPhone kids games category in a total of 90 countries), we set about creating the Deeno-saur world in our App.
The concept was very simple: children earn Deeno coins for brushing their teeth with the daily goals set by their parents, with these coins they look after their virtual pet, feeding, washing, dressing and playing mini-games with Deeno… all whilst improving long term dental health. Next step… designing a toothbrush. And who better than award winning creative designer Denise Carrion, www.decarrion.com. And the results were fantastic with the creation of a really compelling presentation box and brush design, complete with the Deeno character being personified on the handle. At this point, this is when the real intensive work started, the development of the electronic and hardware technology. Driven by the project team in Trinca, the expertise to meet the research and development demands of the Deeno brush with embedded electronic technology was sought in the Parque Tecnológico São Leopoldo, Brazil; namely with Vieira Filho Technology and the company's lead team, with more than 50 years of hardware development experience and a portfolio of hundreds of product designs. After months of coordinating the development efforts and numerous firmware & prototype versions, with our manufacturing partner in China, Ningbo Womaide Electrics Co ltd., the experts at Vieira Filho and the Software and App developers in Trinca, we had finally made our first connected toothbrush! And this was a thing of beauty, its technology rivalling even the biggest ‘adult’ electric toothbrushes in the market today. It all sounds very easy straightforward, rest assured it was the opposite. A big thank you to all those involved in the last 2.5 years bringing the Deeno-saur Smart Bluetooth Toothbrush and App to life.
Risks and challenges
Despite our years of experience, and the fact that we have produced a first batch of brushes hat are fully functional and working perfectly, there are some risks and some potential challenges for producing and developing the next batch of Deeno Brushes.
The risks described below therefore are possible in any ambitious technological project that aims to achieve industrial production.
From the outset of the project, we have worked hard to adopt achievable goals within our budget and timelines, and render challenges and obstacles manageable, but unknown variables cannot be totally excluded: Risks related to suppliers: Delays in parts delivery and consequent reiterations of product engineering could represent an obstacle. Given the campaign schedule and its unknown outcome, it is impossible to determine the number of components required far in advance and establish delivery dates for timely production: some components may be out of stock and require weeks to become available again.
Production and engineering risks: A range of scenarios and solutions have been factored in to minimize disruption, but cannot be 100% excluded. Deeno has been designed so that the production process is as simple and efficient as possible to minimize unforeseen hold-ups. As mentioned there are currently 1500 brushes available in the UK, which are in great physical and working order, these will be destined to the British pledgers (so you might get a surprise early delivery:)), however, due to the smoothness of the first production run there are no obvious challenges expected in the future runs.
Software/ App related risks: Our software system has undergone months of tests, going through hundreds of hours of dynamic stress-tests (that is, test data applied to validate the correct function of the software), required to release software considered "production grade-software". We have uncovered a lot of bugs along the way, and although, we feel we have tackled them all, in uncertain the world of software it is very difficult to determine and eliminate all "bugs"... these may occur when we release new updates with several really cool features (intending to develop and launch with a successful campaign), which may not have undergone the rigorous testing of the current features.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
