WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL HORIZON?
Despite all the warnings about the overuse of antibiotics, an antibiotic resistant pandemic decimates the planet. While 'The Infected' roam the land, eight survivors escape on a dilapidated 747. Little is known about the effect of the outbreak, just that there is no known cure, and that it is safer to be in the air than on the ground. What lengths are the passengers and crew prepared to go to in order to survive? Are they safe to land, and what will they find when they do? Can they outrun the pandemic, where every minute counts? Think 'Contagion', meets 'The Road', set on a 747...
WHY ARE WE MAKING THIS FILM?
We love Sci-Fi. We love thrillers. And we love films that make you think. We want to make a film that you have never seen before and we are drawing on our passion and our skill to make a thought-provoking, action-packed film. 'The Infected' in our film are not your typical Hollywood zombies... While bringing you all the kicks of an edge of your seat thriller, we’re also basing our story around the very real and important issue of Antibiotic Resistance. Listen to this BBC Radio 4 programme if you don’t believe us...
Don't worry if it sounds a little heavy... we've worked hard on the script and there are laughs along the way.
WHO ARE WE?
We are: Luke Healy (producer) and Anthony Woodley (writer/director). Artificial Horizon is our second feature film and, together with our great creative team, we have worked on a handful of shorts over the last few years. Here’s a link to the trailer of our first feature, ‘Outpost 11’
WHAT WILL THE FILM LOOK LIKE?
It's not going to look like anything you have ever seen! Our last film Outpost 11 was made on a shoestring budget and we had to beg, borrow, and steal to get the film made. With Artificial Horizon, we are stepping things up significantly and this is going to show in the production value. We have already secured the set and have access to the 747 at Dunsfold Aerodrome. The film will be held together with a strong, smart script, and to carry this off, we are close to engaging some very exciting actors... which we hope to announce shortly. We're conscious that the final product, while having the polished finish of a Hollywood thriller, keeps all the charm and wit of a UK independent film.
SOME OF OUR CREATIVE TEAM:
HOW'S IT GOING?
So far, so very good. We have had a great time over the last six months developing the script and are on track to shoot later this year. Based on the reaction to the script and the success of our first feature Outpost 11, Stealth Media Group have agreed to sell and distribute Artificial Horizon. LA based casting director Sharon Howard-Field is now on board to cast the film. Throughout her career Sharon has cast Grumpy Old Men, The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover, and Al Pacino's Merchant of Venice to name a few. She is instrumental in helping us secure well-known American/British actors. Plus, as you can see from our video, BAFTA winning Hardeep Singh Kohli is now part of our cast, so there will be some laughs… But we have a lot further to go and the next step will include finalising arrangements with a high caliber US/UK cast.
SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE DOING PRETTY WELL. WHY ARE YOU DOING A KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN?
Good question. We have secured part of the financing from a group of private investors on the back our first feature, which is a great vote of confidence given that we are such a young production company. As with any film project, risks are understandably high and our private financing is therefore limited. Crucially, it does not cover pre-production, which we have financed out of our own pockets so far. Experience has taught us that preparation is essential to a successful shoot, and we now require additional financing for this essential stage. Hence us turning to Kickstarter. We need this money to prepare the big action sequences, perform extensive make-up tests, choreograph the fight scenes, and hold casting sessions. These steps will require the input of many professional resources and time. £17,500 is the minimum amount we know we need to secure our pre-production schedule.
Lastly, we have teamed up with some NGOs/Medical Campaigners/Scientists to ensure that we not only make a Sci-Fi Thriller that you want to see, but that we also raise awareness about the real threat of antibiotic resistance... and through this process have already learned that the facts can be even scarier than fiction.
To sum it up, filmmaking can be an unreliable business, with a lot of unknown factors.
We start with a script we’re really proud of. Then we assemble the best team possible, get insurance and make contingency plans. It's impossible to guarantee everything will come together exactly as planned, but in the end, we will have created a movie that all of us can be proud of. It's a great journey, and we thank you in advance if you can help make this ride possible.
• For those of you visiting our set, we plan to late September/early October. However, this has the potential to change. We will keep you updated so you can plan ahead to visit us.
• If you become an extra (£250 reward)), you must be a UK citizen or have a UK work visa, and not be a member of SAG/AFTRA.
• You must be over 18 or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (who will count as your plus one) to attend the premiere or visit the set. Extras must also be over 18.
• Some rewards may require additional paperwork. If you are appearing in the film, you will have to sign a release.
• Final cut of the film may have to be further edited in certain cases to adhere to the laws in the country which it is being viewed, or for different types of media.
• All shooting locations are subject to change for a variety of reasons, including the amount of money we are able to raise and the particular locations giving us the right to shoot.
• This fundraising campaign is all subject to applicable Kickstarter rules/regulations, movie guild rules and applicable law. If any of this conflicts, we will work with you in good faith to give you a substitute reward.
• The scene to be directed is non negotiable and will involve director and producer being on set.
UPDATE #2 - 3 DAYS IN!
Well, what a start! We've been overwhelmed by the feedback so far - thanks very much. We wanted to take this opportunity to address some of the points that we've been asked this week:
1) Who makes up the team and where is mission control? Luke and Ant you can see in the picture above and Tash is the pretty one in this picture. We're here (mostly) at our office in Camden, London.
2) Will there be other rewards added? Yes, we are planning to add the first of our update rewards on Wednesday. It's quite a corker, especially if you're a foodie...
3) How have we got access to a 747? Well, as they say, it's not what you know... It really is an amazing set. Here are a few of the films and TV shows that have been shot on the plane:
We're really pleased. We have loved Beccy's work over the years on stage at, among many other theatres, the National and the RSC. Ant is particularly pleased as he'll be directing Beccy straight after she shoots the second series of the BBC's The Trip a tv show he loves. More casting updates to come soon...
Cast member and Celebrity MasterChef runner-up Hardeep Singh Kohli has offered to cook a meal in your home or a location of your choice! So if you have a special event coming up - a birthday, an anniversary or even just a Friday night in, why not have Hardeep do the cooking? This Kickstarter reward costs £1,000 per person and is available anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales (minimum 4 people if HSK has to travel outside London or Edinburgh). Enjoy and thanks for supporting our film!
UPDATE #5 - INFECTED!
For those who didn't see our Facebook page yesterday, we caught up with Claudine, our make up designer on Artificial Horizon. She showed us one possible design for the characters in the film who get infected. What do you think? (Don't worry, it is make up)
UPDATE #6 - HAVE YOU SEEN OUR UPDATES?
We've had lots of new backers join the 'Artificial Horizon' family, so for the new comers, hello again. If you have the time, please take a look at our previous updates to get a broader picture of how the campaign is going. We give special updates for our backers only and in this one we thought you might like to see Ant, the director, welcoming an old friend back on to the 747... Plus, tonight, you could join us in our tThunderclap at 7pm GMT, should you feel so inclined. We'd never heard of these until a few weeks ago so if it's new to you too, simply put, a Thunderclap is a completely secure crowd funding platform that helps people be heard by saying something together. Click on the link for more information. Our message will so far reach over 57,000 people. Be great to have your support to make the clap even louder!
UPDATE #7 - THINKING OF YOU FIRST...
As promised, all updates come first to our wonderful backers.
Things are really progressing with our script for Artificial Horizon. Since starting this campaign, we have had some of the most renowned scientists and doctors in the world, who work with antibiotic resistance, get in touch with us. They are now advising us on some of the more scientific elements to our story and tomorrow afternoon, at 3pm GMT, we will be taking part in our first Twitter debate with, among others, the Sepsis UK Trust and Dr Laura Piddock. They got wind of our film and approached us to collaborate. It's very exciting as we are getting to work with some of the best minds on this subject on the planet. If you are near your phone/computer tomorrow follow us on @ArtHorizon1 to join in the debate.
We're hoping to announce some of very exciting casting news soon. As is often the way, these things take longer than planned, but Sharon Howard-Field, our casting director, is in talks with agents both here in London and in the States. Again, you'll be the first to hear!
Lastly, please check out our update video, below. We'll be posting later this evening on our Facebook page for everyone else. We'd love to hear any thoughts you have.
We'll be in touch soon!
UPDATE #8 - WE MADE THE FRONT PAGE...
of Kickstarters staff picks! Thank you so much to all of you for your support. There are thousands of projects on Kickstarter at any given time, so this is a massive endorsement for us.
UPDATE #9 - TWEET TWEET!
Tomorrow morning, as we continue to increase our number of backers, from 10am GMT, we will start a 24 hour tweet-a-thon! Between us, we will tweet every 10 minutes for a whole day! So if you're not following us yet, now is the time to start... We'd love to have you along with us for the ride: https://twitter.com/ArtHorizon1 Please spread the word - our goal is to get 50 more backers throughout the day.
UPDATE #10 - MORE REWARDS!
The Exec Producer on our last film has generously offered to match (double) the next £3,000 in contributions to our Kickstarter campaign. We know that you have already backed our campaign, but perhaps you’ve been talking to your friends about backing us, or even thinking of upping your own backing..? If you or your friends have been holding back until the last minute, here's a chance to double your contribution and support our film. But please hurry, as time is ticking and if we don't meet our target, all pledges will be lost.
From today we are giving you the opportunity to name one of "The Infected People" (or Zombies) after you, or after one of your friends (as an original gift). Your Zombie will be mentioned by name in the film, and their name will also appear in the credits. This reward costs a mere £35 and comes with a download of film (post DVD/VOD release) so you’ll be one of the first to see your name of choice on the cast list! This reward is on a first come first served basis, and we are only looking to name ten of our Infected People – so please hurry!
And if you don't want a Zombie named after you, we've also got ... wait for it... Artificial Horizon MUGS! (pictured below) Ecologically minded filmmakers that we are, to combat all the waste plastic cups normally used on a film set, we will be providing all the cast and crew with one of these mugs for the shoot. This way, you can really feel like a member of the company by having your own mug! So here's your chance to help with the campaign, double the contribution, and for just £20 get a cool original gift, and a download of the film (post DVD/VOD release). Drink your tea with impeccable style...
UPDATE #11 - DIRECTOR REWARD
Dear backers: the end is nigh! Our campaign ends this Friday, 5pm GMT. It has been the most amazing experience: we are now working with internationally renowned micro-biologists on the script; we've had press coverage all over the world; we have over 7,000 followers on Facebook and we have so far raised almost £11,500. Amazing!
But we still have £6,000 to raise, or we won't see any of the money pledged. You have already done more than your fair share and we are really grateful. We just wanted to take a moment to remind you of our reward that has not been seen on Kickstarter before - the chance to direct a scene in our film. For someone looking to get into film, it could be a fantastic opportunity and we’d love to tailor the award around the right person. We know we’re going to have a hell of a cast and it’s a great scene that we have earmarked for this reward. It’s our hope that whoever pledges would shadow Ant on set for a while and really become part of the crew. If there is anyone who you think might be interested in this reward, please do ask them to get in touch.

Risks and challenges
Learn About Accountability on Kickstarter
The main challenge in making 'Artificial Horizon' will be timing.
Making a high production-value film on an independent film budget means it may take longer to complete. However, we are confident that with your backing and that of our lovely commercial investors we can punch way above our limited budget.
The other challenge we could face in making 'Artificial Horizon' is, well, rain (this is the UK after all). We have minimized this risk by setting 2/3rds of the film on the plane. However, 1/3rd of the shoot will be outside, which is essential to the plot and will massively enhance the production value. We will of course build contingencies into our shooting schedule, but, to an extent, we will have to rely on the skies being good to us...
Without Kickstarter and without your help, we won't be able to make the 'Artificial Horizon' that we envision. Our goal is to make a film that you'll want to watch and can be proud knowing that you made happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
