Stretch Goal! - $21,000
A huge thanks to all our backers, we're thrilled to have reached our target. With one day left we want to keep the push going with our new stretch goal of 21k. The extra budget will not only go towards reinforcing the quality of certain elements, such as set design and visual effects, but it will also give us the chance to reach our budget beyond the costs of rewards and fees.
ROAR is a film about generational bonds and disconnects, exploring the commitments of two brothers divided by pride, brought together to fulfill their Grandfather's final wishes. In doing so they question each others motives as they struggle to come to terms with what has been asked of them.
Roar is about people with extraordinary powers; powers they spend their lives battling to control, and which ultimately consume them.
A bit of background:
We've been developing this project for a number of months. Initially our process began with collecting images and reference that interested and engaged us. This kicked-off a long spell of story development, many brains were stormed and whiskeys consumed until we had a really strong script to work with.
From there we've been expanding on our story, developing our characters and creating a richly detailed world to place them into. This pushed us into creating the teaser trailer above. It was a chance for us to begin visual development of the film, scout some potential locations, and get our hands dirty. It was a great process to go through, and it's gotten us really thrilled at what we can achieve with the real film!.
We're incredibly excited to get this film into production.
It's important with an ambitious project such as this that we carefully plan out as much as we can before getting our hands dirty on set. We're already deep into pre-production. Our script is ready. We're through a good portion of our storyboarding (courtesy of Ed Chee) and beginning to piece together an animatic. It's super exciting to see an idea we've plucked from our heads start to turn into something real. Check out a couple of Ed's storyboards below.
*UPDATE* Check out the updates section for further insight into our progress on this.
We're making a 10 min short film. We'll be shooting in small-town Canada over 3-4 days in early Spring.
We want this film to look incredible, the quality of image is crucial to our vision, so we will be shooting on RED Epic.
It's an expensive short to produce. We have two key scenes with practical fire effects that add a level of complexity to our shoot. We could achieve these shots with CG, but it will never look as good as the real thing.
We're putting together an awesome team of talent to help us make this film. We already have some key players involved, and we're incredibly grateful for the experience and time they're bringing to the table. Currently we're on the lookout for a Producer, and we're eager to start searching for our lead cast.
Stuart Langfield - Writer & Director: Working as an independent filmmaker and animator, with a focus on design and animation for feature film and documentary. His strong background in traditional graphic design, and a Masters in animation from Glasgow School of Art, brings a uniquely detail oriented approach to his work. Previous credits include work on award winning feature documentaries PressPausePlay and A Fragile Trust.
Dylan Rekert - Writer & Director: Surrounded by film from a young age, the process helped shape Dylan's narrative style and visual focus. Though a career in graphic design has led him down many different paths of artistic expression and communication, film has remained his passion and he has continued to contribute to the filmmaking process every step of the way.
Ian Anderson - Cinematographer: Anderson’s ten years of industry experience include a variety of long and short format film productions and commercial projects. His focus on long format story telling has resulted in his most recent collaboration with director Chris MacBride, "The Conspiracy". This marks Ian’s third feature film credit as Cinematographer.
Jennifer Mackie - Editor: With a fine art background, Jennifer has worked for many years in animation cinematography, most notably as Camera and Staging Lead at Pixar Canada. Editing was a natural progression of her skill set, broadening her view of cinematic storytelling.
Ed Chee - Storyboard Artist: Ed Chee is a storyboard artist working in the animation industry and has worked on projects ranging from pre-school to action adventure TV series. Currently he is a Supervising Storyboard Director at Nerd Corps Entertainment working on the Monster High series of movies. He also has a diploma in Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design with a major in painting and can be seen plein-air painting in and around the city of Vancouver. Ed's 3 favourite movies are: The Fisher King, GoodFellas, Shaolin Soccer.

Your pledges, in addition to some of our own financing, will be used to cover our production expenses. Films aren't cheap to make, even short ones!, so to make things clearer, check the graphic below for a rough breakdown of the projects budget:

Risks and challenges
As with any project of this nature, we can and will encounter an array of obstacles during our production.
Securing the right talent will be our first, and biggest challenge. We’re looking for experienced actors who can embody, and bring to life, the characters we have on paper. Our script is short on words but high in visual intensity and emotion, our talent will need to possess a subtlety and charisma that’s conveyed through images, not words. We think our script will be a showcase for this talent, and we’re confident we can find and partner with the right individuals.
We’re shooting for an incredibly rich, detailed world to set our film in, and we’re aware that issues may arise in terms of locations, production design, and weather. Budget is tight, and achieving the high standard this film needs is going to be a careful balancing act to achieve our vision.
We’re confident that alongside the incredibly talented team we’re assembling, we’ll be able to overcome these difficulties, and continue to push towards our ultimate goal of making a really kick-ass film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
