A unique portable coffee press that makes great tasting coffee and keeps it fresh and at the perfect drinking temperature.
The perfect cup of coffee that you can make and enjoy any time and anywhere. That is what we set out to accomplish, and that is what the Frei Press is all about.
The Frei Press: Great Coffee at the Perfect Temperature and Simple to Use.
The Frei Press is the ultimate on-the-go coffee brewer. Brew your coffee quickly and easily, then enjoy it at any time or place. First and foremost, the Frei Press delivers a quality cup of coffee.
The Frei Container is a vacuum insulated flask that also cools your hot beverage to the perfect temperature, then releases heat back into your brew over time for you to enjoy wherever and whenever you choose.
We called it the Frei Press because of the freedom that the coffee press gives you. Freedom to enjoy your coffee anywhere and at any time and knowing that the taste of your brew isn't going to change, unlike in other travel brewers.
"Anything that is innovating the coffee world is awesome. I really like how you're brewing straight into your drinking vessel, and the fact that you can brew and not have to worry about the mess until later on is really good in my opinion."
Kyle Lyons, Roaster, Darkstar Roastery
"Delicious! But it was my coffee, so of course it was delicious. It was really good, very clean extraction, there was no bitter overextraction. Afterwards the cleanup seemed really nice, it came out in a really firm puck."
Renata Taylor, Owner, Grouch & Co Specialty Coffee Roasters
"The coffee was beautiful. It takes the concept of doing a portable espresso, but without the whole 9 bar pressure and having to work out that problem in the field, but it produces a really nice concentrated shot that you can tailor to your specific taste"
Johnathan Parkes, QC/Training Manager, Dimattina Coffee
"The fact that it's all in one is a huge advantage. It is convenient in the way that it is, especially in cleanup. I like the design as well." Seb Huigens, Roaster, Mano a Mano Coffee Roasters
"It makes a mean coffee but yeah, it looks really good. I really like it."
Gabriel Tan, Head Roaster & Director, Blacklist Coffee Winner 2015 WA Latte Art Championship
Our labyrinth filter plate and fine paper filter stop sediments and oils from passing into your coffee, preventing over-extraction and bitterness, and guaranteeing that your coffee will be of the highest clarity every time. Our patent pending plunger design segregates used coffee grounds from your beverage completely.
The Frei Press uses a full-immersion brew technique which allows for the rapid and complete extraction of coffee from the grinds. This means that you can enjoy a full-flavoured brew every time. Our filter design and higher pressure approach to brewing allows you to use a variety of coffee grounds.
Brew your coffee in under two minutes with the Frei Press. Our pressure extraction method puts quality coffee in your hands fast.
"Surprisingly fantastic, it was very good. When you look at it you think it's so simple that the coffee would be maybe okay, but I was surprised. It actually brightened and intensified the coffee."
Gabi Sturba, Dimattina Coffee
Not too hot
A layer of phase change material within the side wall of the Frei Press container absorbs heat from your coffee to bring it to a drinkable temperature in minutes. This means no more long waits for coffee to cool, and no more burnt lips.
Not too cold
The active temperature regulating layer then releases this heat over an extended period of time. This maintains a perfect drinking temperature in the realm of 63 degrees Celsius while the cap is on for upwards of five hours.
Anywhere you go
The Frei Container keeps your coffee warm until you're ready to drink. This gives you the freedom to enjoy your favorite beverage wherever you go and whenever you want, without switching containers. Take your brewer to go, or enjoy your coffee hot off the press.
"The thermostability of it, the fact that it keeps at the same temperature for a long time, that's awesome."
Kyle Lyons, Roaster, Darkstar Coffee
Easy to Brew
One of the greatest features of the Frei Press is its simplicity in use. Just insert the base plate, add coffee grounds and hot water, engage the plunger unit and press downward until the coffee has fully extracted. Then you can enjoy your coffee hot off the press, or attach the lid and leave it for later.
Easy to Clean
One of the worst things about a classic French Press, as well as many other coffee makers out there is the mess they make. The easy removal of spent grounds means that the Frei Press is a breeze to clean. Pull up on the central guide rod to remove the used grounds, then after a simple rinse you're ready to brew again.
Built to Last
Made from 100% 18/8 stainless steel and high quality food-grade silicon for that ultra clean taste, our patent-pending Frei Press is as sturdy as a coffee press could be. All points of contact with your beverage are electro-polished to free you from metallic tasting coffee, which makes for one of the cleanest storage and drinking surfaces out there. No more dirty plastic and absolutely no potentially harmful chemicals anywhere near your drink.
"I really liked it. I thought it was simple, sophisticated and easy to use. I thought it was well put together."
Renata Taylor, Owner Grouch & Co Specialty Coffee Roasters

(Based off an initial funding of AU$50,000)
The initial moulding and tooling involved with projects of this nature is always a costly venture. We estimate that two thirds of our funds will go towards the overall manufacturing process, including materials, tooling, moulding, production and finishing.
Legal and Other Associated Fees:
Approximately 15% of the funding will be directed to future legal costs related to import and business fees.
Kickstarter takes an 8-10% cut of all funding from successful campaigns.
These costs leave us with 8-10% of funding remaining, which will be used as needed to ensure that the project does not run over budget or beyond our estimated delivery date. We are keenly aware that unforeseen costs do arise, and have prepared accordingly.
Currently, the Frei Press can hold up to 20oz in liquid volume, which is a sizeable flask. We are ever mindful that the size of any given appliance is a big factor when considering whether to make a purchase. As such, we are considering a second, smaller size option of 16oz in the future. Scaling the Frei Press down in size will see a reduction in height and weight, but will also decrease the total amount of coffee that you can carry in the container.
Extra cap design! You can choose between our classic lid design or sunken cap design. The sunken cap is leakproof, and can be partially unscrewed to allow the user to easily access their beverage. The sunken cap can also be used with the classic lid to turn the drinking neck into a small, watertight carry cup! For those who want both, the sunken cap will be available for separate purchase after this stretch goal is met.
New Colour! Onyx Black will become an available option at no additional cost to the purchaser.
Community Colour! All Kickstarter patrons will be given the opportunity to vote on an additional colour, which will become an available option at no additional cost to the purchaser.
We are very grateful for the support of our local coffee loving community, as well as friends and family. As such, and to thank our local supporters we will be offering free delivery, and will happily refund postage to anyone within the Perth Metropolitan Area.
For the rest of Australia, unfortunately we are unable to make this happen, as Australia Post charges a flat postage rate. Please be aware that we value all of our Australian supporters, and wish that we could extend this same gesture to you.
How does it taste?
Simply put, the Frei Press will bring out the best in any given coffee ground. Our press has been extensively tested and trialed by industry professionals, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Roasters love it for how the flavor profile of their coffee shines through. The Frei Press delivers coffee as it was meant to be enjoyed. We tested our brewer for extraction yield (passing with flying colours) and our claim of coffee that does not continue to overbrew over time has been confirmed to be true by industry professionals.
How much coffee does it make?
In short, a serious amount. The Frei Press is capable of brewing a 16 ounce 'grande' coffee with 36g of coffee. The container can hold 20oz of liquid with the 'neck', but the plunger unit and coffee grinds will occupy some of this space while brewing.
How long does it take to brew?
This depends entirely on user preference. Allowing a longer time to steep, or aerating the coffee by stirring or shaking before pressing will change the flavor profile of the finished product. We would encourage you to explore these various taste profiles. A complex cup of coffee is possible in under a minute with the Frei Press.
What grind size should I use?
The Frei Press is capable of pressing any size of coffee ground, however for the best results and ease of use in pressing we recommend a medium grind for filter style coffee, or a finer grind for espresso style coffee concentrate. This is of course down to user preference, and we encourage you to try all different kinds of coffee in the Frei Press.
Is it available in other sizes?
While we are not currently offering the Frei Press in anything other than a 20oz, we are extremely conscious of our backers wants and needs. If user feedback indicates that a smaller size option will be successful then we may see a 16oz version some time in the future.
Is the lid completely watertight/leak-proof?
We are pleased to say that both the standard vacuum sealed lid and sunken cap (stretch goal) are completely leak-proof and watertight, though we recommend the standard lid for transport within bags, as the sunken cap may unscrew in transit with enough jostling and outside interference.
Can I make espresso style coffee in the Frei Press?
Absolutely. The Frei Press uses a pressure extraction method that extracts your coffee quickly and fully. For espresso style coffee, we recommend a 4-1 ratio of water to coffee. Roughly speaking, 15 grams, or approximately 1.5 tablespoons of ground espresso will make a great tasting espresso style shot, which means adding 60ml of water per shot. You can aerate your coffee by partially engaging the plunger and giving a little shake (do not invert the press). Press straight away. You can then top your coffee up with hot water for a full-size beverage (recommend 2-3 shots for a full container).
We do not recommend using boiling or near-boiling water while brewing coffee of a very fine grind size, as overextraction may occur. Instead we recommend water of a temperature between 80-85°C (175-185°F) for best results.
Here's a video of the entire process in a clear plastic tube for illustration purposes.
What about filter-coffee?
The Frei Press makes a mean filter coffee! We would recommend a medium grind and a longer steep time of 1.5-3 minutes depending on taste preferences. The best mode will depend on the type of coffee used, but again we encourage our backers to explore and find their favourite method.
One recipe from Mark and Tim Loy, two of our initial supporters and serious coffee lovers:
Coffee to Water ratio: 1:13.3 i.e 7.5g/100ml water, we used a light roast coffee at a Medium Grind (setting of 7 on a Lido 3 grinder), and water at 88-94°C
1. Insert base plate and add coffee
2. Add 50ml water and wait 30 seconds for coffee to bloom
3. Add remaining water and wait 1 minute and 30 seconds
4. Evenly and fully press for 20 seconds.
Does the Frei Press make chai?
While we were at Melbourne International Coffee Expo, we were approached by several people who were interested to know if the Frei Press could brew Chai Latte. We'd never tried before, but agreed to put the press to the test with MAM Beverages' Sticky Chai and RealChai's Honey Chai, and we are pleased to say that the Frei Press can in fact do chai.
It is not possible to press chai latte through a paper filter, so we would instead recommend that you use a chunkier chai mix (not powdered chai) and instead only use the Frei Press' metal filter plates to separate the chai from your frothed milk
Is this temperature regulating material safe? While the phase change material contained within the Frei Press is located away from human contact, this material is 100% food safe and nontoxic.
Why stainless steel?
We decided on a fully stainless steel design for several reasons. Primarily, because plastics, even the so-called "good" BPA-free plastics have been found to produce harmful chemicals, particularly when exposed to heat. An added benefit is to the taste of your brewed coffee. Plastics can often alter the taste of foods and beverages, while a cleaner electro-polished stainless steel container will always deliver that perfect coffee experience. This material is also highly durable, a must for adventurous and active users who want a travel press that may be subjected to a degree of punishment.
Is the Frei Press dishwasher safe?
As with most vacuum containers we recommend a hand wash for our container, including the drinking neck and cover. The reason for this is that the high temperatures of some parts of a dishwasher cycle may deteriorate vacuum insulation over time. The plunger unit and guide rod however are entirely stainless steel and silicon, and are dishwasher safe.
If you liked our campaign, please share and follow us on social media so that together we can bring the Frei Press to the world.
Risks and challenges
Working with an all stainless-steel design does of course incur some additional difficulties in manufacturing. As with any mechanism that requires high precision in the manufacturing and design process, the Frei Press requires a high level of quality control. This means that from the moment the campaign wraps up we will be focused on ensuring the highest quality product makes its way to our backers.
The moulding process for the Frei Press is more intensive than similar products due to the three-walled design. A total of 7 moulds will be required, 2 for the cap, 2 for the drinking neck and 3 for the container.
One challenge we have identified is in efficiently vacuum insulating the Frei Press' signature drinking lip, though the technology required in manufacture should be analogous to the manufacture of the container. That being said, this is a step in a new direction, and any new innovation brings with it some element of risk.
Our team has experience in the manufacturing industry, and connections with knowledgeable and trusted contract manufacturers who have experience manufacturing vacuum-insulated flasks. We are confident that by working closely with them we will be able to bring a quality product to your doorstep.
As with any project of this nature, our logistic and supply times are a best estimate. With our familial ties to quality contract manufacturers we are equipped to take on this challenge.
OUR NUMBER ONE GOAL is to ensure that our Kickstarter supporters be rewarded. That's a promise that we will do everything we can to make sure that this campaign is successful, and progresses smoothly and on schedule until the Frei Press makes its way to your door.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
