WE DID IT! With the help of 525 of you (and counting) we have raised over $40,000 to help us open Mayday Community Space, NYC's newest social justice community space!
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who got us across the finish line! We really, really, really appreciate you.
But it's not over yet...Now we're going to make the most of our final hours. Every dollar raised above 40K means:
- More free programming at Mayday
- More space for grassroots groups to meet and organize
- More supplies for movement art-making
- More capacity to curate events that combine culture and politics for all of NYC to enjoy.
So let’s keep spreading the word! Let your friends know that there are still wonderful rewards to claim before the Tuesday, Dec. 9th deadline at 8:30pm!
Thanks again!!! And see you at Mayday!
What is Mayday Space?
Mayday is a movement space and soon-to-be-opened bar in Bushwick, Brooklyn for community events, nightlife and social justice organizing. We’re transforming the brand new building into a neighborhood resource and a citywide destination where people come to work, learn, dance and build together.
New York City desperately needs more spaces that welcome a diversity of people working for justice across multiple fronts. Mayday is taking a truly unique approach to filling this huge void. We are a place where you can bring your friends to hang or work together on a project, where your organization can host or attend workshops, classes or fundraisers at sliding-scale affordable rates, and where grassroots movements are strengthened by sharing resources and dreaming up new ideas.
We’re honored to have first opened our doors this August to house the arts production for the historic People’s Climate March. For two months, hundreds of artists and activists teamed up to build the floats, banners, signs, and props that so colorfully filled the streets of NYC on Sept. 21st and the Flood Wall St. actions the following day. Since then we’ve hosted dozens of events, including book launches, trainings, performances and fundraisers. We’re so thankful to work with such a phenomenal collection of community leaders, organizers and creative visionaries (including you!) to bring Mayday to life. Together we’ve proven just how vital it is for our movements to have a space to call our own.
Don't just read what we have to say- Mayday has already been listed as one of the upcoming “20 Best Nightlife Picks” in New York Magazine, and we’ve also been featured in Newsweek, PBS, NY Times, Metro, Weather Channel, Brooklyn NY 1, Bushwick Daily and the Indypendent.
Where are we going next?
We've raised funds to build out our 1st floor bar, cafe and events space. We're good on that. We need your support now to sustain and expand our community center on the 2nd floor, so it can include an affordable co-working studio, a space for public programming and a year-round movement arts hub.
We are focusing on long-term sustainability. To do that effectively, we’ve temporarily closed our doors for November to finish renovations to the new (and still mostly raw) building we call home. We are excited to use this time to build capacity, gather resources and continue to strengthen our relationships with each other and other community members.
We need your support to:
- Renovate the space to re-open our doors -- we have floors to stain, furniture to buy, and audio-visual equipment to hook-up!
- Expand our fantastic public programming -- with adequate resources we can host more community classes, workshops and special events free of charge!
- Hire 2 of our full-time volunteers as paid staff -- Mayday is a people-powered project, but we need staff to stay sustainable and ensure maximum awesomeness!
Who else is in Mayday Space?
We have also invited some incredible local community groups to share the space with us.
Make the Road New York (MRNY) will expand their Bushwick headquarters into Mayday to host adult education classes (including English and citizenship classes), empowerment workshops, and other community events. With deep roots and the largest immigrant membership base in NYC, Make the Road builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education and critical services.
Ecostation:NY--a Bushwick-based food justice and sustainable urban agriculture organization--is also in the house! They are transforming our 1500 sq ft terrace into a lush garden hangout space and our roof into a youth-run "Farm-in-the-Sky".

Risks and challenges
Right now we are putting all our energy into developing long-term sustainable structures that will propel our bold vision forward. This includes ongoing community outreach, supporting our volunteer-run working groups, improving systems for booking and executing events, curating public programming, not to mention the maintenance of the space itself.
Our big challenge is that it takes several months to get to the point where we can unleash our full creative and organizing potential. If we can raise enough money to get us through the initial set up, we're golden!
Should you choose to support us, your money will go to the community center's start up infrastructure to create the space our movements and communities need. Projectors, chairs, flooring, shelving, lockable storage, and, yes, rent for the first couple of months. It will also go to pay stipends to two coordinators who will bring it all together.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
