A young bride questions her sanity as she faces abuse at the hands of her new family... until the day she decides to fight back.
A Dark, Twisted Drama with a Unique Style
Khazana ("Treasured') is the first feature film project from the ambitious team at Nik/Nak Productions. Founded by writer/director Rahul Nath - best known for tackling taboo subjects head-on in his hit festival short ‘Foreign’ - Nik/Nak seeks to tell compelling stories in a unique Bollywood / Hollywood crossover style.
Khazana focuses on new bride Vaidehi, who is systematically undone by her husband and his family after an arranged marriage. As she is destroyed, we are drawn into her plans for revenge. A theme of the film, that mental and verbal abuse can be as damaging as physical abuse, resonated powerfully with the cast and crew. Though the characters in the film are of South Asian decent, we feel that these themes are universal.
What the Money Is For
The $85,000 goal is designed to cover our production expenses. This includes paying actors, renting the right gear, finding the best locations etc. Our stretch goal of $125,000 would cover post-production expenses, such as editing, color correction, and mixing. We designed the budget to achieve what we feel is an optimal tradeoff between cost and production value.
For example, one pivotal scene in the film takes place at an Indian-style wedding. Having sufficient production design budget for the event will be the difference between a hum-drum affair, and something that is truly a compelling, immersive experience for the audience. (By the way, if you've ever wanted to see an Indian wedding up close and/or appear in a film, we're offering invitations to the wedding scene as rewards!)
This tightly composed script is a collaboration between Nath and producers Noah Potter and Beth McMillan. The revision process extended over the summer, through casting and read-throughs; this allowed the final version to be custom-tailored to both our amazing cast and the strengths of the production team. We invite you to take a peak at the first two pages so as to get an idea of the flavor of the piece.
The attached cast is ridiculously talented. Working with these folks has lit a creative fire for the production team; we feel that we have an obligation to create a film that can live up to these performances. If you'd like more information on any of the cast, each image below links to their IMDB page. The main IMDB for the film, is here.
The Nik/Nak Productions Team
Rahul Nath is a British Indian known as an actor, dancer, writer and director. Nath shot into the public eye in 2006 when he rejected a series regular role on a popular UK medical drama, telling the media that he wanted variety in his career. In the same year he established himself as a theatre darling by appearing in two major London based plays. In 2008, Nath was officially shipped over to the USA to star in a FOX TV pilot. At the same time, he was signed up by major brands to endorse their products. These included Intel, State Farm Insurance, Jack in the Box, TravelZoo, Virgin America and Nintendo. In 2010 he took on the role of writer and director and released two short films called “Foreign” and “Compromise”. The first has won many awards on the film festival circuit including Best Actor and Best Director for Nath, while the second is beginning its rounds of the festival scene. Also known for his dancing, Nath was asked to judge a popular Bollywood dance competition for the Star TV network. In 2010, he released his very own fitness DVD, Bollywood Aerobics that has had a huge success in the USA.
Noah began his career as an entrepreneur, starting and selling the successful video game development studio Chewy Software in Chicago. After earning his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Noah decided to return to his lifelong passion for music, relocating to Los Angeles to pursue film scoring full time in 2007. Noah has scored films starring Lucy Liu, Martin Sheen and the late David Carradine among others. His most recent film, "Salvation", premiered at the Dances With Films festival in Los Angeles, while another, "5 Souls", is about to enter worldwide distribution in August. Other projects have included the release of a solo album, "Winter Moods" as well as the recent completion of the contemporary musical "Ghosts of Baghdad" with writer/lyricist Trevor Dewey. Most recently, Noah served as composer for the Kickstarter funded web series "The Broken Continent".
Beth McMillan - Producer, Editor
An accomplished editor, Beth has been editing her own films since childhood. She began on Final Cut Pro, before making the transition to Avid while attending the Los Angeles Film School. Her passion for the editing process is driven by her delight in bringing stories to life. This is her fourth project with director Rahul Nath, having begun her collaboration with him on the award-winning short "Foreign". Beth is currently expecting her first child at some point during Khazana's August shoot.
Stephen began his shooting career in 2002. He garnered awards early on, including the “Milos Forman Award” at the 2002 Ralph Lauren Polo Shorts Festival and PBS’ “Best Independent Film”, 2003. His photography was praised in a review by New York Times Chief Critic, Elvis Mitchell, for his work on Besotted. Shelter Island premiered on Showtime and is in DVD release. Stephen’s 2nd Unit Photography was recently seen in Lions Gate Films’ Lord of War. BuzzKill is currently playing on TimeWarner Cable, RCN Cable and Netflix as well as being in BluRay release. Stephen's latest feature, Doobious Sources is currently finishing Post Production.

Your Choice of Poster
We've created three different posters for the film. While a vote from our Facebook fans determined the winning design (The 'Gritty" version) these other two also had passionate supporters. The result, is that you can now pick your favorite too!
Do You Want to See This Movie?
Khazana is a film that needs a home outside of the studio system. It’s our first feature under the Nik/Nak banner, though the production team has worked on literally dozens of major films. The South Asian characters and controversial storyline don’t fit into a typical action or horror genre-film mold. We have a mesmerizing story, and a world-class cast to tell it. We’ve already been pre-accepted into the Goa and Jaipur film festivals on the strength of the script and the director. We’re asking for your help to get us there.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
On an independent film, the biggest risks have to do with finding the right team to work with. We've concentrated on filling the gaps in our team experience, and making sure that we have the right people in the right positions. For example, we brought on experienced Director of Photography Stephen Treadway to help round out the production team, to counterbalance the fact that our producers have more hands on experience in post production.
The core creative collaboration between Nath, Potter and McMillan is the guiding force behind the project. We've worked together before, on "Compromise", and have been guiding this project from script treatment to where it is now over the course of the summer. We're enthusiastic, driven and passionate about making this film happen. The cast and crew that we've assembled shares those values. Further, the management team has extremely complimentary skill-sets, that we feel puts us in a great position to deal with the unexpected.
Obviously, some issues such as cast or crew injury might result in delay, but we have basically no doubts that we are well positioned to deliver an awesome movie to our backers. We've got the right people to make this happen, should we be graced with he support of the Kickstarter community.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
