A Japanese horror dark fantasy campaign setting for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
Update 09/13: We have reached our Tier 2 goal of $7000.00 on to the tier 3 goal, for which I have made a change. T3 will still be the Player's Guide but it will be done in 32 page increments the first increment being $8,250 ($1,250 additional). each additional $1,250.00 we raise will add an additional 32 pages to the player's guide.
The dark shores of Kaidan beckon, are you brave enough for the journey?
Last year, Rite Publishing, with the support of Cubicle 7 Entertainment, released “The Curse of the Golden Spear” trilogy of modules for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. These critically acclaimed adventure module introduced players and Game Masters alike to the island realm of Kaidan. Now we are ready to take the next step: the production of a campaign guidebook, detailing more fully the people and places of Kaidan. And we would like your help with this project.
What is Kaidan?
An oriental fantasy-horror setting, Kaidan derives its mythos exclusively from the legends and histories of Japan. The very word, Kaidan, is Japanese for ghost story, or spooky tale, and such a name is apropos. Ruled over by an undying shogun in the name of an immortal child emperor, Kaidan is a land of trapped souls, restless dead, vengeful demons and afflicted spirits. In Kaidan, death is never the end, but only one more unhappy spoke in a bleak and twisted karmic cycle. Here, adventurers are sorely needed, if only to hold back the darkness a little longer.
What do we want to produce?
Our initial goal ($4000.00) is the production of a 150 page, softcover, b/w “Gamemaster's Guide to Kaidan.” Our second tier goal ($7,000), will increase the size to 200 pages; Upon reaching our third tier goal ($12,250) we will produce a 150 page “Complete Player's Guide to Kaidan.” Upon reaching our 4th tier goal ($14,050), we will produce a “Kaidan Bestiary.” The more we raise at this particular stretch, the larger the bestiary.
The Gamemaster's Guide, the first of our intended books, will contain a comprehensive overview of the geography and regions of the Kaidan, as well as an overview of its political system, religions, and cultures. The book will lay out the history of the island, the nature of its particular curse, and the ramifications this has on divine spells. Blending new rules and mechanics with informative descriptive text, the goal is to provide a book which will enable each Gamemaster to make Kaidan come alive (so to speak), as a rich, vibrant, and horrific realm.
If we raise the necessary funds for the player's guide, it will present Kaidan from a more individualistic perspective, with discussions of daily life, including common superstitions and suppositions. This is the book that will present new races and classes, along with equipment and player-focused magic. With this book we hope to create a supplement which will allow players to fully enmesh themselves into the setting without giving away any of the dark secrets the islands hold.
Finally, with the Bestiary, we want to bring those monsters and templates we have already crafted for Kaidan in the modules together in one place, alongside newly minted creatures. The bulk of these creatures are taken straight from the lore of ancient Japan, but a few additional, thematically appropriate creatures might also make an appearance. It is our opinion that a GM can never have too many monsters at his disposal and we would love the chance to add another thick tome to you arsenal (the thickness, of course, being dependent upon the level of funding we can achieve).
The money raised for this project will help fund the commissioning of quality art, the writing of the material and the editing of the same. At the same time, those who contribute will have the opportunity to offer input into the shape of the final product.
Who are we?
Kaidan is the brain-child of Michael Tumey, who was thrilled to see his concepts come to life in “The Curse of the Golden Spear,” and who will be ecstatic when the campaign guide likewise see's publication. Of Japanese descent, Michael was long dissatisfied with the treatment of oriental settings. Kaidan, built from an exclusive Japanese foundation, is his answer to this problem. Michael, a recognized cartographer, also provides us with our all our Kaidan maps.
Jonathan McAnulty, the writer and designer of the Curse of the Golden Spear trilogy, is overseeing the project as lead designer and writer. Jonathan's credits to date also include the acclaimed Coliseum Morpheuon, which like the trilogy, was a Rite Publishing patronage project, as well as articles for Kobold Quarterly. This will be the third such project Jonathan will be tasked with bringing to fruition.
Though Will McCardell has not been with Rite long, he is already making a name for himself as a go-to rules guy and, following up on assisting Jonathan with the recently released The Way of the Samurai, joins this project as Assistant Designer. He looks forward to immersing himself in the world of Kaidan and bringing many awesome options to both GMs and players. His past writing credits include The Secrets of Forgotten Magic Items and The Secrets of Tactical Archetypes series for Rite Publishing.
T. H. Gulliver has worked on several project for Rite Publishing, but of late, his work has focused on the PFRPG Haunt rules and the books he has done in this field, including Rite's #30 Haunts for Kaidan. T. H. Gulliver , an Adjunct Professor of Hauntology, is confident that following this endeavor, he shall obtain full tenure.
