"Faraway" is a lighthearted travel documentary series publicizing the English-speaking world to underrated regions around planet Earth for what they are, without a political slant. We will be covering food, culture, wilderness, exciting drives, and how a typical day is like for people of various classes, ethnicities, and lifestyles in these places.
We are starting the first part of our series in the diverse land of the Russian Federation, where 135 languages are spoken, and people of 185 designated ethnic groups reside.
"Travel and Leisure" published an article back in March 2017 about reports from travel companies that Western tourists from the US have been, in record numbers, booking tours in Russia especially since 2015, despite the political climate. This is the opportunity we need to show everyone else what Russia is.
The importance of our first trip is the fact that the Russian citizens have been misunderstood and suffered enough for centuries from the disavowal of their humanity by the rest of the world, be it during the Mongolian occupation or the Cold War, but now those days are numbered.
Our biggest inspiration comes from the National Geographiс book "Drives of a Lifetime", containing the 500 greatest driving routes in the world. There is only one trip in Russia that is shorter than NYC to Montreal. Now think about it, the largest country in the world, with many roads running alongside beautiful mountains and waterways, and National Geographic was only able to come up with one tiny route. Do you see the potential here?
For our pilot in late-August of 2017, we are visiting the Russian cities of Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, Samara, and Kazan, with a storyline influenced by the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup...
Derevnya: any rural area that people live in year-round, and typically house generations of families. Livestock roam freely, as no one fears theft or kidnapping (the following sample clip was shot two years ago)...
Our main project will be shot in the summer of 2018 during the FIFA World Cup, and will involve a twenty city tour in across the land that is 1.8 times the size of the United States, from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok. We want to reach an agreement with FIFA to cover the 2018 World Cup in the hosting cities, and feature footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Wayne Rooney on our show, while covering the main topics of our series.
Example of a dacha, a summer cottage many Russians own where, while there, a lot of farm work is done by hand, no matter your class or occupation (the following sample clip was also shot two years ago NO SOUND)...
The show will feature a cocky, but naïve American host, and a sly Russian host, who is always looking for a chance to prank the American on camera. They will travel the nation by planes, trains, and automobiles...
It is not about what is popular, it is about what is real. We want to explore the vast forests of Russia that spread for hundreds of miles, try out mushroom and berry picking, and play a balalaika with a bear on a unicycle. We want you to see the Russian culture for what it is. Most importantly, we want to see a world with less tensions between the two biggest powers in the world, as we know that these tensions do not lead to anything good. Maybe we will even have a little fun.
Risks and challenges
Some Westerners worry about traveling in Russia, be it the fear of simply getting lost, or trouble from a perhaps unrelated political situation, but we have the creator of this project being from Nizhny Novgorod, and support from experienced local film production companies, such as Big Fish Production (BigFishPro.com), a Festival de Cannes winner, as well as the governments in the municipalities we are visiting.
Our expenses, being a small, efficient, independent production company include, but are not limited to: visas/passports, flights to Russia, accommodations, crew salaries, equipment rentals, foodLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
