About

Who Are We?

Convergent Home Technologies Ltd (CHT) was formed in 2004 to capitalise on the application of digital technology to the home control, energy and environmental management market.

The current Dianemo software began life as an open source project, initially called Pluto and currently known as LinuxMCE (LMCE). After purchasing commercial licenses from Pluto, CHT realised that there was a lot of work needed to be done to the software to make it a commercial grade proposition. In 2007 we began work on porting the code to later more stable Linux builds and adding the functionality we needed for our customers whilst feeding back our enhancements to the community and in 2008 we launched Dianemo. As time moved on our code base and Linux version moved further away from LMCE and less of our enhancements worked with the open source version. In an effort to provide a stable working version to users in the LMCE community we began selling licensed versions of the Dianemo software to individual users and resellers.

Now we want to give the power of a Dianemo Smart Home back to the community!

Dianemo has always had the capability to act as the "digital glue" for your home, bringing together control and management of just about anything in your home through a single user interface. Originally this was on a TV screen and controlled by an infra red remote control but now of course by smartphones and tablets. Dianemo is the best centralised control for all your digital services and devices, these days referred to as the 'Internet of Things' (IoT), Dianemo was an IoT control before the phrase existed!

To enable us to let the community have this power and share the benefits we will need to re-engineer the software code to remove the licensed elements of Dianemo. We'll also need to enhance our API infrastructure to allow community members and corporate developers to easily add new devices to be controlled and monitored by the system, these are devices  made by third party companies (like Nest or Samsung etc). We'll also need to enhance our plug and play engine to make it really easy for less-technical users to download the software and get running in the shortest possible time.

So What is Dianemo and how does it work?

Dianemo operates on a combination of wired and wireless networks, but almost all wiring requires only standard data cabling, making it much easier to install, significantly reducing cost and making the system accessible to a much wider market. Since the company was formed there has been a proliferation of digital devices in the home which has increased consumer awareness of what is possible and consequently their appetite and willingness to embrace new technologies. It has also created a level of frustration and dissatisfaction as many of these new devices operate in isolation. Dianemo can deliver a complete Smart Home control package via a single simple, intuitive interface typically using the consumers existing iPad/iPhone or similar device, and they can do it from anywhere in the world where they have access to the internet.

The Dianemo system can control lighting, blinds, heating, and air conditioning for both convenience and to assist in reducing energy consumption; provide entry control and manage security cameras; record, store, and distribute Audio/Video media; control Sky TV and other set top boxes and manage the distribution of HD quality TV around the home; deliver Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony and an intercom via its inbuilt IP telephone system and can also provide a wide range of easily configured scenarios to support lifestyle, energy management and security. Over the last 6 years Dianemo has been installed in a number of homes throughout the UK and abroad.

Dianemo is currently sold as a software and hardware package that provides the ”digital glue” to bring together a range of disparate devices and all of the home’s digital services, content and media in one powerful but easy to use system to deliver a genuine Smart Home system. It can be controlled via a range of affordable controllers including most of the popular phones and tablets such as iPhone or iPad as well as Android, PC and Mac based systems.  Dianemo can be extended to every room of the home to suit the homeowner’s ever changing needs. It is connected to and helps manage and protect the broadband service and has been designed to be upgraded and enhanced on-line so that it will always have the latest services and features.

The key features of Dianemo are:

  • Control of Smart TV's: Using UPnP we can push movies stored on your system to the TV;
  • DVD and audio library storage (iTunes compatible);
  • Off-Air TV recording capability;
  • Integration & control of multiple sources - Blu-Ray Players, Sky/Virgin STB’s, Apple TV etc;
  • Lighting control and energy management (Z-Wave, Lutron, Rako etc);
  • Integration with KNX and other home control systems;
  • Security camera and alarm integration and control;
  • Integrated VoIP telephony system for intercom and access control;
  • Secure remote access over the Internet.

Dianemo incorporates the functionality to integrate with a broad range of lighting, heating control, storage and distribution systems. All that needs to be added are various items of peripheral hardware to deliver the functionality, for example cameras, light switches, curtains/blinds, TV's, amplifiers and speakers. This approach makes Dianemo both flexible and scalable as both functionality and coverage can be varied to meet the changing and usually growing needs of the consumer.

Dianemo Deployment & Connectivity Options
Dianemo Deployment & Connectivity Options

Dianemo operates on a combination of wired and wireless networks, but any wiring requires only standard data cabling, making it easy to install by general enthusiasts, electricians and professionals significantly reducing labour and infrastructure costs. Hardware based Dianemo systems are largely pre-configured before being shipped for installation and once installed most additional capabilities can be commissioned remotely, minimising the need for expensive on site programming or specialist training for the installer.

Dianemo can also be installed in existing properties with comparative ease and minimum disruption. Whilst some additional wiring may be required Dianemo can also utilise the latest networking technology to distribute data over mains wiring or new high speed Wi-Fi.

Current and Future development of Dianemo

We're always striving to enhance Dianemo - our next major release will launch our new cross platform user interface (the images shown on this page are betas of the new UI currently in testing). Future releases will focus on further simplifying the installation and configuration process for installers whilst at the same time making it possible to deploy the next generation of energy efficient, compact and more affordable hardware.

New Dianemo UI Demo

Energy management is becoming increasingly important and we will be significantly enhancing Dianemo in a number ways to support this. The next version of Dianemo will be based on very compact low energy hardware so the energy used to power a Dianemo system will be less than a 1/10th of today's systems making it possible to install Dianemo in even the smallest of properties. We also want to add smart energy management features to Dianemo to allow it to be far smarter when managing energy usage. Thirdly we will be integrating more intelligently with the best 3rd party smart energy management products from companies such as Nest and Honeywell.

One of our major goals in the near future is to take the process of installation to another level in terms of simplicity for the installer and to make the software both more intuitive and intelligent too. We will also be expanding our already extensive device library that enables Dianemo to control and communicate with a myriad of devices around the home. An open source approach will help greatly with this as developers will collaborate in adding device drivers for their favourite home automation and control product which will expand the range of devices Dianemo can integrate and control. Along side those enhancements we expect to deliver considerably enhanced Cloud based capabilities to enable better secure remote access & support.

What will your money be used for?

We need to raise £200,000 to recruit experienced software engineers in various disciplines to strengthen our software development team to get all the re-coding done in a timely and professional manner.

We're currently a very small team with just a couple of people responsible for all the great development done on Dianemo so far. They are super human but even they need help now! An enhanced team will allow us to re-engineer the software so that all the Pluto Public licensed elements can be removed, manage deployment of the new platform and support the new community of open source users we want to build as well as the existing and new licensed corporate customers and resellers. We also want to enhance our API infrastructure to make it more straight forward for developers to add device drivers for Dianemo to control more third party hardware.

Project Timescales

Here are the projected timescales and milestones we will be working to achieve for the project.

Risks and challenges

The main challenge with this project will be ensuring we cleanly re-code the licensed elements of Dianemo which will allow us to open source the new version for personal use. However, our license makes it very clear what elements are licensed and our development team have been planning a transition away from the licensed elements for some time and already have some of the design of the new architecture sketched out.

The only other risk is that of actual development time. As with any software development, testing and clearing bugs can be an ongoing process prior to allowing releases to the public.
