Mike's inspiration for CARMEN

I thought I'd give my spiel about how Carmen came to be...

CARMEN came about while I was left wondering why there aren't more female protagonists within the pages of comic books. It really is as simple as that. I grew accustomed to seeing female roles given to sidekicks or assisting characters but outside of superhero comics, there weren’t really any female leading characters. Joss Whedon was asked “Why do you write strong female characters?” to which he answered with “Because you’re still asking me that question.” That’s EXACTLY what I feel. Why can’t females be strong and brave?

Throughout writing the initial plot, I found myself watching a lot of ‘Alias’, ‘Dark Angel’ and ‘Stargate SG-1’. It definitely assisted in shaping the genre that I was looking for as CARMEN was originally intended to be a straight-forward action story. Additional inspiration came from real life events regarding the politics of the world. Stories were being told on a daily basis relating to what the government will or will not tell its people. What if the government WERE the bad guys and villains?

This melded the series into a political thriller that feeds on the fears of what the government, regardless of which nation, shares with us. How the politics live their lives potentially unaffected by the choices they make for civilians. But as I said before; I was watching various shows at the time of writing the plot and that lead to merging political thriller with the genres of action and science fiction.

So there you have it, my inspiration towards the comic book series, CARMEN.
