About

More Information on Steam :

Introduction :

Northern Regime is a unique, dynamic, and real world hardcore survival game. We are setting out to change peoples opinions on the survival game genre. Our goal is to create a dynamic world where every decision the player makes directly effects the ecosystem and the way he/she is viewed in the world.

Real World Location :

Northern Regime's map has been entirely built by data taken from a real world location in Northern Dakota, where the game-play and story actually takes place. The decision of forming a world out of real data was made to save time, and come up with a more realistic landscape. I'm definitely not the greatest when it comes to developing realistic scenery in a world, If I did try, it may take me an eternity and most likely would never look as good as it does now. Having a real world location makes the game feel really immersive, I really feel like I am walking through Northern Dakota when I am playing Northern Regime. Even as the developer I find myself just wandering the landscape for hours at a time exploring all of the unique areas it has to offer and the large mountain sides. I hope other players feel the same way when it comes to playing and enjoying Northern Regime.

 Animal & Environmental Ecosystem

Northern Regime has a really unique and interesting animal ecosystem, well at least quite interesting to me. All things you do in the world will have a direct impact on all and everything living. The way you take on animals is going to need a very serious plan or strategy or you might find yourself starving from a lack of important resources.

Dynamic Breeding

Animals currently have a dynamic breeding system, when you spawn into your first game there will be a random quantity of animals spawned, this number will not vary anymore from refreshing your game. It's up to the animals of the land to do their job. Killing too many animals may indeed separate their breed causing lack of population, and of course a lack of population means concerning troubles of breeding. You may want to kill as many as you can so you have an abundance of food, but theirs a strong chance you won't be receiving any more.

Migration Of Danger

Animals will naturally avoid dangerous areas. These dangerous areas are developed from killing too many animals in a specific area, but they can also be developed from too much gun fire. The gun fire does not matter if it is random, against enemies, or targeting animals, no matter what they will do their best to stay away from those locations. The dynamic is the decision of how to play out the game and how to react to situations. If you know as the player that the population of animals is lacking but you come across an enemy camp site, it may be best to just avoid it until the breads population increases.

Resources & Animals

Resources are very important to your survival however, they are equally important to the survival of all animals. There's a plant in Northern Regime that is boiled with water, drinking this will heal the players wound and increase his hunger level. Having an over populated area with animals will cause a decrease in how much you actually find this plant, this could be deadly if you are unable to find it. Harvesting too much of this plant can also cause starvation for a number of breads leading to death. This is another serious dynamic that will take lots of thought and strategic planning.

 Dynamic Artificial Intelligence & Reputation

Northern Regime's dynamic Ai is something we are very proud of and extremely excited to see how it progresses and increases with quality and variation. Right now we have about 3 variations of soldiers you may encounter while playing; Hostile troops, Neutral troops, and Friendly troops.

Hostile

Hostile soldiers will attack on sight no questions asked. Once reputation is added to the mix the outcome may vary. Your reputation must be exceedingly high for them not to attack you, even then their is always a chance it may not work out anyways. If you do get an in with the camp you have the opportunity to give them items or take on tasks they may have. After you have gained a mutual understanding this group will then become neutral and maybe someday friendly.

Neutral

Neutral soldiers will not attack as long as you have all weapons holstered. This of course will depend entirely on your reputation. A fresh reputation will not provoke an attack as long as you do not have weapons drawn, if you do happen to be to nosy; going through their items, maybe even stealing some, they will instantly attack or possibly hold you as prisoner. Bribing will later be added to the player experience. If you have a very negative reputation they will act similar to a hostile camp.

Friendly

Friendly camps and soldiers have a very strict loyalty to either you, or your faction. So in most instances they will not attack no matter what case, weapons drawn, attacking, stealing and so on, however, engaging in friendly warfare will drop your reputation significantly low. Having an incredibly low reputation will prompt removal of your faction causing every single group to engage in warfare and occasionally leading to man tracking.

 Npc's + Reputation

Northern Regime has a variety of different computed controlled characters you can encounter on your journey. We are continuously adding different characters to make the world seem more alive and less lonely. We want Northern Regime to feel very lively and prove a great game does not need to have multiplayer to have fun. Northern Regime will focus a lot of time on interactivity.

Travelers

This is something you may encounter quite a bit through your game play. Travelers coming through the mountain side to reach their destination. They will not be hostile at all. You will be able to talk with them and ask questions and maybe offer, or request resources. You are more likely to be given free items if your reputation is good. If your reputation is extremely bad they also are likely to give you items based on fear, the dynamic here is the fact they will wait for an opportunity to kill you. Sometimes very hard to tell based on their attitude. The most times of attack is when you turn your back on them or holster one of your weapons. Killing innocent travelers will decrease reputation immensely.

Traders

Traders, just like travelers, will pass by every now and now. Traders will always be stocked with a variety of goods. You may trade with them and negotiate pricing and different deals. Killing traders is a huge no in Northern Regime. Most traders are operating under a government faction such as the Union, stealing or killing traders under the union will result in high bounties on your head causing extended man hunts.

Here are some other characters you may encounter that have similar characteristics : Passing by Soldiers Lost Citizens Homeless Survivors.

  Power & Crafting

Starting a fresh game of Northern Regime, you will spawn as a weak character. You won't have food, water, or weapons. The very start of the game will be extremely challenging. We don't want the consumer to feel like a strong killer in the wild, at least not at the start. This is a very specific design choice, we believe the moment you find or create a high powered rifle will feel exhilarating and worth the struggle that much more worth it. You'll most likely create an extremely inaccurate pistol in the begging making it very difficult to hunt or defend yourself creating an awesome challenge of increasing your skill.

Crafting

Crafting will most likely be one of our most simple functions as we really don't want the focus of the game to revolve around it. Crafting will have around 3 slots maybe four for each item. A gun will consist of wood, a knife, and some metal. Additionally you will have to craft your own ammo and so on.

A Dynamic Story

Here's something else we believe will really separate us from other survival games. Northern Regime will tell a dynamic story through the eye's of a war torn soldier and the destruction he has experienced in the past. We call it a dynamic story because it can be started at the very end, the middle, or the start. No matter where it begins you will always feel immersed and satisfied. It's also something additional to make the player less lonely in such a grand world, and create an attachment to the character in the game, hopefully this will make the character feel more like someone you enjoy being around and less like a three dimensional model. Story telling and voice acting is always something indie developers struggle to execute correctly. We are doing our very best to prefect this story, and we most certainly will not release it, if it does not meet our, and the fans expectations.

Personality

The character you control will have his own personality. When shooting a deer he may comment on how he feels, he may have guilt. When you come across a beautiful valley he will most likely express himself. Then they are the more dark situations like coming across a friendly camp raided by Native Americans, and so on.

 Stretch Goals

+$500 CAD : Development Vlog Series.

I think it would be very interesting to buy some equiptment and start doing development vlogs. These vlogs would just be sreencaptures with audio talking about what I would like to do and work on. It would displaly the programming progress, basic development progress, it would include explenations of all of the ideas and function in the game. Question and Answers would also be really awesome to interact with everyone.

+$750 CAD : Horse Riding & Horse Taming

Horses and Riding is a tricky function to program, and it's quite time consuming. Not only is it difficult, horse models are expensive. This money would help out tremendously. Horse riding isn't something the game really needs, it's just not as important as the core functions we need to work on right now. However, it's something I think we would all love to have in Northern Regime

+$1000 CAD :  Mod Support.

We would love to implement mod support into Northern Regime. This would extend Northern Regime's life time by years. It would also be quite interesting to see how creative modders can be in what they create. Mod support is another thing that takes quite a while requiring more funding.

+$4000 CAD : Competitive Multiplayer.

Multiplayer is something that takes a very long time, development time would need to be expanded about 2 or three months. You basicly need to re programm the whole game in a serperate project. Luckily you can still use old code from the main build so it wouldn't be entirely from scratch. The first multiplayer version would include 2 or 3 maps total with one game mode : Capture the flag. Each team would start out pretty far away from eachother in a base. They would need to find items just like they would in single player, craft items and weapons, then march out as a team to take over the enemies base.

Funding Allocation

The approach for Kickstarter is not to make a game. We already have a somewhat solid build. We could ship Northern Regimme and everything would be somewhat okay. The reason we need additional funding is to expand development time. Releasing the game in the next 3 months is not what we have envisioned, we would most likely not be proud of what we had created. We don't want to create an okay game, we want to create a fantastic game. Reaching our goal would result in 3-5 months of extra development. This would really allow us to keep polishing and perfecting Northen Regime.

3D Models And Assets

Professional three dimensional models are quite expensive to make. We could go with a cheaper modeler but it takes away immersion from the players experience. To create a full and dynamic feeling world we need to be able to acquire a variety of different models. Especially when it comes to crafting. To craft one object you need 3 different sub objects, that would be 4 different models total just for one creatable object in Northern Regime. The funding will allow us to really expand.

Misc Expenses

The misc expenses would go towards launch campaigns, public relations campaigns. Pretty much just small things that would really help the success of launch, as well as longevity of Northern Regime.

Licensing & Monthly Payments

From all of the services we use; game engine, web hosting, advertising, and a some other minor services the money starts to add up every month. We would be very fortunate to not have to stress about our situation any longer.

Graphical Art

Graphical art can be very expensive. A single image can range anywhere in between 80 and 120 dollars. I have tried to create my own images but the quality will never be what is expected for our players to enjoy. It makes much more sense to have a professional create these for us

Risks and challenges

There are quite a few risks and challenges involved in this project. First of all I have never released a game to the public before, the bugs and countless errors that pop up will create a great difficulty. I can easily solve most bugs, but it is a totally different experience trying to figure out solutions to bugs on thousands of different computers. The second challenge is very similar. Like I said I have never released a game to the public, I know it is going to be very tough to accommodate to thousands of peoples needs. I am just hoping I can learn very fast so launch can be as smooth as possible.
