A dark narrative short film about the past and its eternal ability to haunt the present.

"The past is never dead. It's not even past." -William Faulkner

Brief Synopsis:

Jack is a mysterious man who is lost and disoriented. With the help of Evelyn, he searches for items out of an old diary written long ago by a woman named Nancy, despite not understanding exactly why he does so. Evelyn helps, but when they are unsuccessful she confronts Jack: Does he know why he restlessly searches for these items? The truth is shocking, and reveals Jack's connections to Evelyn, Nancy, and the strange old diary.

Full Synopsis (with spoilers):

A young man named Jack awakes from a confusing dream in a strange room. He is surrounded by antique items he has obsessively collected, drawing inspiration from the diary of a deceased woman named Nancy, written when Nancy was young. An old pendant hangs from a place of importance on the wall. He is staying with Evelyn, a caring local woman until he can, as he puts it, “get back on his feet.” Jack begins his day insisting he must find another item from the diary and Evelyn offers to use her knowledge of the surrounding area to help.

They visit a quaint local antique shop and spend the afternoon there with Lindsey, a young woman who works at the shop and also obsesses over older things. Jack shows Lindsey a picture of young Nancy as they discuss the reasons for collecting such antiquated things. Lindsey, like Jack, has a preoccupation with the past that borders on obsessive, but her obsession is different. Her vitality and passion stands in stark contrast to Jack's confusion.

They are unsuccessful in their search and leave the shop, and on the way home Evelyn confronts Jack. Does he know why he searches for these items? Why he feels such a connection to Nancy? It becomes clear that Evelyn is connected to Jack in a meaningful way, yet all of this only makes Jack feel even more disoriented. Back at Evelyn's house, Jack searches frantically through his collectibles in a desperate attempt to jog his memory, and in the process wrecks the room. He opens the pendant hanging from the wall to find a picture of himself and Nancy, young and in love. He falls to the floor in anguish and confusion.

Evelyn peeks through the door and sees the real Jack: Jack is actually an old man, and Evelyn is his caretaker and granddaughter. His memories, including those of Nancy, his deceased wife, have been destroyed by Dementia. He often wakes believing himself to be at an earlier stage of his life, and therefore meets many of the challenges of life with anger and confusion. Evelyn returns to her bedroom and inside there are pictures, one of young Jack and Nancy in love, the other of old Jack and Evelyn at Evelyn's graduation. That night, Jack reenters his dream and searches for meaning.

How does Kickstarter work?

Kickstarter provides tools to raise funds for creative projects via crowd funding, which is a term used to describe when individuals network and pool their money together to support other individuals with interesting and compelling projects.

Basically, my Producer and I have worked out a preliminary budget and determined the minimum amount of money we need to fund this film. If we do not receive $4000 in pledges by the deadline, we will receive no money and the film will not be made. It's that simple.

That being said, if we get $4500 in pledges, or even $5000 in pledges, we do not pocket the extra money. Instead, we invest even more in the project and are more able to deliver a more dynamic and impressive final product.

Where does your money go?

Your generous pledge will go a long way to making this film a reality. $4000 might seem like a lot of money, but in film it is simply a drop in the bucket. It is the minimum amount that I need to make this film the right way, and that means paying for the following: rental of film equipment, paid actors, food and transportation for the crew, production design (which includes props, set design, wardrobe, and makeup), production insurance, post-production, and film festival entry fees.

More specifically, we are renting a Canon EOS c300 cinema camera and a pair of Angenieux Optimo DP lenses (the same combination used for "Blue is the Warmest Colour" which won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2013). We need to feed more than a dozen crew members and pay four actors. Plus all those other things mentioned above.

Why help Nostalgia?

Nostalgia is trying to do something that is very hard in a micro-budget short film: tell a deep, complex, compelling story with great acting and artful cinematography. It also tells a humanistic and honest story about the tragedy of memory diseases and the dangers of living in the past, rich in metaphor without the dishonest escapism of its Hollywood counterparts.

Now factor in the challenges of working under such a tight budget and timeframe and the promise of a fascinating and rewarding project, plus hard working and talented people. Sounds like the perfect project for a Kickstarter campaign.

Remember,we only get the funds to make this film if we hit our goal! If we fall short, we don't receive ANY money.

No pledge is too small (or too large) and each will go a long way to turn this beautiful story into a film. I have assembled an incredible crew, including talented professionals and ambitious, promising students. We have picked talented and serious actors ready to tackle the heavy subject matter of the script. We have put months and months of planning into preproduction and we are ready to put all of our planning into action.

But I can't do it without you.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The largest risk and challenge with the making of Nostalgia is the timeframe. We have scheduled a down-to-the-wire production, where the film goes from script to screen in 11 weeks. It is an unforgiving timeframe, and one that will test the filmmakers' ability and experience.

This challenge is being approached in a simple way: I have put together an extremely talented and experienced crew, cast amazing actors, and planned every production detail to the finest degree. The production will be run professionally and efficiently as a result, and allow for an enormous amount of flexibility should unforeseen challenges arise.
