Serendip - the wrist watch that helps you find true love.
The Serendips are individually programmed wrist watches that talk to each other through radio signals. Once within 100 feet of a match, they'll let you know that destiny is about to strike.
Do you remember that romantic movie, the one where the guy walks into that place - it's a restaurant, a book store, the subway - he sits, he turns around, he picks something up, and... WHAM!, their eyes meet. They both know what it means, even though no words have been spoken. The moment is enough. They know they LOVE each other.
LOVE. We’re all looking for it. On dating apps like OkCupid, POF, and Tinder we search high and low for that special someone. Because we know they are out there. Somewhere. We just have to find them. But while we search we’re forgetting about the best match maker in the history of the universe: Destiny.
DESTINY has a knack of matching us with just the right person, at just the right time. After all, she helped Romeo find Juliet, united Tristan and Isolde, matched Scarlett and Rhett, and helped Darcy get her Elizabeth. Imagine then what she can do for you!
But even Destiny needs a helping hand. That’s why we’ve created the Serendip. The Serendip is a wrist watch that does one important thing — it helps you find the love of your life.
The Serendip is an individually programmed wrist watch that communicates with other Serendip watches, through radio signals. Once within a radius of 100 feet, they react by vibration and signal. That special someone can show up anywhere, at any time, and Serendip will be there to let you know when destiny is about to strike.
Each Serendip journey begins with a custom made personality test. The result of this test will pair you with a unique version Serendip programmed for just you, and your future partner.
Users simply wear their Serendips as they go about their day, and whenever they feel it vibrate — at a restaurant, the bookstore, or the gas station — and see the Destiny symbol flash, they know a match is close by. It’s like having destiny on your wrist!
Fredrik Colting, the founder of the Serendip, says:
“Every single person I know is searching for love. But dating sites give you the sense of shopping for a new partner. I wanted to get away from that. I mean, we are talking about people here, not shoes. I wanted to find a way where we could let destiny have a bigger part in finding the love of our lives. Don’t get me wrong, I think online technology and social media is great. But meeting someone because you are in the right place, at the right time... there’s something special about that. Something romantic. And I think everyone should be able to star in their own romantic movie. And with the Serendip they can.”
Finally, you can be the star of your very own romantic movie!
HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS THAT HAVE COME UP DURING OUR DEVELOPMENT:
QUESTION 1 - Density
If you live in New York, Los Angeles, or even Nebraska City, it wouldn't be very fun if only 10 people were walking around with Serendips (Although wouldn't it be great if destiny still peggged one of them as the love of your life?) In any given city we need to get out plenty of Serendips, and we have several ways to do this: colabs with current dating sites, organizing Serendip dating clubs, sponsoring large sporting and music events nationwide, are just a few ways we will work to make sure that we get plenty of Serendips out there. You have the chance to be among the first to join this phenomena, and that's pretty cool.
QUESTION 2 - Smartwatches/apps
Smartwatches run apps, and people make apps for everything these days. If a person has a good idea for a new product you can bet a dollar that someone will ask them: "Why don't you just make an app?" Well, there are several reasons: an app isn't really a conversation piece the same way a physical product is, and where's the fun anyway, in giving away an app as a present? Smartwatches are marching in, but they are expensive, and are cluttered with many other apps that compete for attention. We believe that a device that does one thing, and does it good, is not only technologically superior, but it also has a greater symbolic value. It says: I take love seriously. It's the reason why we still have books around, even though there are fantastic e-readers out there! The Serendip has core values that we don't want to dilute with other functions. Sometimes less is just more.
Who we are, and why we need your help:
The Serendip team is a group of romantics that feel that "ordinary" online dating is a bit cut-and-dry. Removed from the prospect of meeting another person is the magic, or destiny, that comes with all great loves. With the Serendip we hope to re-introduce this romance into what should be a magical experience: finding the love of your life.
The Serendips that you see are working prototypes. With your support we can put Serendip onto wrists, and unite hearts worldwide.
Your contribution will help fund:
-Tooling and mechanical costs
-Large component order
-Assembly and testing
We started working on the Serendip 1 year ago, and we've come a long way since those first development meetings. What started as an idea slowly took form in sketches, models and concept prototypes. Right from the start we settled on the name Serendip, as it represents life's workings behind the scene.
Our goal has always been to create a product that will spread joy, and love, while also pushing the envelope on style and product design. We began our search for the best partners, designers and production specialists, to make our dream come true. During these years we have sourced a very experienced team of manufacturers and component suppliers from around the world. We've established contact with the select few that meet our strict standards of quality, price and ethical production.
During development we have experimented with several different types of designs and materials to perfect our product, and we have arrived with the Serendip you see today. Along the road we've continued to solve both software and hardware problems, along with hand crafting the unique personality test that is the base for the Serendip.
Today our design has only the slight remaining tweaks to be ironed out, while components are ceaslessly being tested to make sure they uphold quality and lenght of life. Packaging design and final prototype testing is under way, and with funds we will be able to convert our prototype to production-ready models, and begin line production. Fulfillment will be handled by international carriers.
Risks and challenges
We currently have working prototypes, but as the design evolves for manufacturing we may need to change some of the materials we are using. Battery life is another challenge, but we are confident we will solve it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
