About

Our Kickstarter Purpose

100% of our efforts in this Kickstarter project are aimed at bringing our new creative idea to life.  As such, the primary focus is on the development, creation, and documentation of this idea.

We're very excited to be launching the first integrated solar roofing system. We're bringing Forward Roofing to Kickstarter for two reasons:

1. We want to share our growth as a company with the community.  We would like to give those interested in green technologies the opportunity to raise the funds necessary to document this fantastic journey.

2. Being the first company to the marketplace, we are looking to gauge the interest level of our product among home owners.

At the end of 2017, our plan is to publish a book that is a year in review.  As the main goal of our Kickstarter campaign, this book will chronicle the ups, downs, and unexpected twists that exist as we work to define a new industry. Most startups aren't afforded the opportunity to document the early stages and most exciting days of a new company; this is unfortunate because these are the days that make for some of the best memories and stories. As such, we will use our Kickstarter funds to hire someone to come along and help us tell our story. This person will have an all access pass behind the scenes as we bring our first product to market. We thought it would be a great exercise for Forward Labs and for those who want to contribute in helping progress sustainable energy and its redesign.

What will be documented?

Our Design Advantages

Having a fully integrated solution, our plans are to cover homes entirely in the Forward Roofing System.  Our custom panels are designed for southern facing portions of the home, while other sections that don't face the sun will be covered in a standard metal application of matching color and style.  The beauty of this system is that the two applications are virtually indistinguishable.  Places where solar panels don't make as much sense, around chimneys, skylights, and vent pipes can be transitioned to a regular metal roof without compromising the overall aesthetic.  It's a beautiful solution and what we believe solar will look like in the 21st century.  We look forward to seeing how this translates to producing a stunning book.

Our product design goal has been to offer a system that looks better than standard solar applications and is more elegantly designed. We have taken these advantages and combined them with the best roofing solution for homes.  We believe that with the right photos and documentation, a product like this will be better understood and more widely adopted.

Where will we be documenting our rollout of the Forward Roofing System?

Our photos and documentation will revolve around two points of interest.  Our offices and facilities in Troy, NY are where we currently reside.  As such, we will be documenting quite a bit there.  We will also be bringing our photographer to home owners interested in our roof in the Northeastern United States.

In New York State we will provide service to the following regions: Capital District including Southern Saratoga County, Catskill Region, Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island.

In Massachusetts we will provide service to the entire state with the exception of most islands off the Cape.

For the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland we will offer service to the entire state.

For the state of Virginia, we will offer service to the Eastern Region and the Northern Region with a few other inclusions in the Hamptons Roads Region.

We will provide service to the entire District of Columbia.

We have a comprehensive list of all zip codes included in our service area in our first blog post on this page.

We believe that the Northeast with its rolling vistas, high mountains, coastal views, variegated flora, and historic landmarks will provide excellent photographic opportunities.  We hope to capture a great deal of the inherent natural beauty of these areas for the book we plan to publish.

Although they are not the primary focus of this campaign, here are some answers about costs and sales.

Whose homes are a good fit for solar?

"Project Sunroof" has made the answer to this question very simple.  Homeowners can visit the Project Sunroof site, enter their home's address, and Google's tool will tell them whether their location is a good fit for our technology. All solar panels are dependent upon an individual's home and its exposure to the sun.

How much will the Forward Roofing System cost homeowners?

This is another great question, it is one that is easily answered by some tools available online.  First, home owners need to know the square footage of their roof.  EagleView Technologies offers a great online order service that measures the square footage of a building's roof and provides detailed information regarding metrics.  Their "Premium" roof measurement tool offers the best guidelines by which to price a building's roof.

There are two costs.

1. Roofing Coverage:

To get this cost, take "Total Roof Area" in the report provided by Eagleview and multiply it by $7.50.

We'll say the average Center Hall Colonial has roughly 2500 square feet of roofing coverage. Using this formula, the roofing coverage cost would be $18,750. (2500 square feet x $7.50 = $18,750)

2. Solar energy output:

Calculating this number will require a little more research.  Electricity bills are a perfect point of reference. The average electricity usage of a building is provided on essentially all bills.  Once prospective buyers have established their annual usage, affordable-solar.com has a great tool to allow those interested to calculate a solar array that fits one's needs:

This tool will give an answer in kilowatts (kW).  Take the number of kilowatts and multiply it by $7820.  This will give you the cost for the solar portion of your roof.

Example: 3.2 kilowatts.  3.2 kilowatts x $7820 = $25,024

Take the number from Step 1 and add it to the number from Step 2.  In this case, $18,750 + $25,024 = $43,774.

This is the cost of a solar roof before incentives and tax breaks.

With a roofing systems that is distinctly different from shingles, we believe our product will increase the inherent beauty of homes. This will make for stunning "before and after" photos from our new in-house visual personnel.

Some things to remember about choosing the size of an array:

1. Its always a good idea to design a solar array to contribute up to 90% of a home's annual required energy but not much more than that.  Most Building Departments will not issue a permit for a system that covers more than 100% of one's energy needs.  An array that is too big pushes to much extra electricity to the grid.  This is electricity that the grid was not designed to handle. 90% is a good, safe number to stick with.

2. What we've outlined above is an online tool.  As such, we will need to verify the measurements by way of a site survey.  That step is conducted by a field visit and verification from our company.  We will not hold home owners to any obligations until everything is confirmed and spelled out in its entirety.  Any specifications on the design of a system will undergo review before it is finalized and set for production and delivery.

As it pertains to prospective book buyers, these metrics will give an idea as to how much of a roof will be showcased by our solar application compared to how much will be covered by traditional metal roofing.

Things to keep in mind.

With an application like this, there are very few homes we are not able to cover in their entirety with a mixture of metal panels and solar roofing.  This will result in a home that has a beautiful roof with a consistent aesthetic from any angle.  The visual difference between the solar panels and roofing panels are slight but will be visible to the naked eye as glass (the covering for the solar roof panels) and PVDF (the coating for the metal roof) have a different sheen and reflect light in slightly different ways.

The solar panels for this roofing system are 30 year panels.  This number is based on conservative estimates amongst professionals in the industry.  The greatest advantage to this system is that it is integrated with a true 50 year roof.  Standard solar panel removal for the purpose of shingle roof replacement has been an issue that has plagued standard solar installations for decades.  In turn, once the Forward Roofing System is in place, there is no need to have anything removed for decades to come.

This roofing system will most likely be able to output more power to a home in a smaller footprint than what is capable with a standard panel application.  What we mean by this is that solar roofing is a better utilization of a roof's space.  We are able to fit more silicon solar cells on a roof in this form factor than with standard panel installations.

Our roll out plans:  We intend to focus initially on the Northeast section of the United States as Zone 1, in what many refer to as the Boston-Washington Corridor.  This is the section of the US our photo book will cover.  If you do not live in this area but would still like to have an individually numbered Club Membership, we have an option for Zone 2 as well.

Risks and challenges

We have considered the many challenges of this project.

-In the US specifically, there needs to be a new workforce that is trained in the installation of this product.
-Having panels that are of a unique size and shape, logistics as a whole will be difficult.
-Our panels will still need to pass through UL Standards before we ship.
