About this project
Hey! I'm Nicole Chartrand and I write and draw the webcomic Fey Winds. I've been working on it for over ten years on weekends and evenings, but this year I'm taking a break from my day job to bring the first half of the entire story in print, in one big, gorgeous book!
I've been drawing comics since I was a teenager. Fey Winds has been published online in its current incarnation since 2006 and in 2015 I won a Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Webcomics Creator for my work! Ten years on, I can't begin to put into words how much working on this comic means to me. I'm beyond excited to get it back in print in a big way, and into your hands!
Fey Winds is half-parody of/half-love letter to some of my favourite things: JRPGs, Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy novels! Kit started out as a simple woodland creature until she was cursed into a somewhat human shape. Now she roams the Seven Kingdoms with her equally cursed friends, looking for a cure, kidnapping princes in distress, liberating treasure and raiding chicken coops along the way!
Silly things can and do happen, the 4th wall takes a beating at times, but at its heart it's an adventure story about four friends (and Zeph), and the lengths they go to for each other and their semi-epic quest.
My goal is to print 800 copies (600 softcover/200 hardcover) of Fey Winds Book 1. Eventually I want to have the entire finished comic printed in two volumes, so with this Kickstarter campaign, you'll be getting the first half of the story, much of which has never been in print before, along with story extras, art and sketches.
- Two versions: hardcover and softcover (perfect bound)
- 300 (ish) pages
- 6.625 x 10.187 inches
- Signed and sketch available
- Spot gloss stretch goal
- Heavy enough to use as a pretty doorstop if you don't want to read it!
But wait, hasn't Fey Winds already been in print before?
Yes, it has! Before Kickstarter existed (cause yeah, that's how old I am!) I ran a home-grown crowfund campaign to put the first 72 pages of the comic in print. And I also had the next 60 or so printed in a second book, but outside out of the first few dozen copies, they've only ever been available at conventions, since my full-time job prevented me from taking the time to get a large number of books printed and shipped.
This Book 1 covers everything that's already been printed and another 150 pages that have never been printed before, in a professional quality book, for less than it would cost for the old edition!
I'm getting close(ish) to the end of the story I had planned for Fey Winds, I want these to be special, and my goal is to eventually have the whole comic in two matching books. So even if you picked up the first print volumes online back in the day or at a con, there's still good reason to snag this one!
Since I am creating this project from the Land of Poutine and Maple Syrup, at first glance the prices might seem high to my southern neighbours, but don't fret! American backers, the book you see at 35$CAD is roughly equivalent to 25$USD! (Poutine and maple syrup not included in your order.)
The last few tiers have unique items!
- the 70/80 CAD tiers get you all the previous goodies and a signed sketch bookplate of a random Fey Winds character!
- the 150 CAD tier gets you all that plus an original watercolour/ink drawing of a Fey Winds character, on 5x7 bristol or arches hot press
If the project meets the 29 000$ goal, there are more goodies in store!
At 32 000$ SPOT GLOSS will be added to both covers to make them look extra pretty and shiny!
At 35 000$ - BOOKMARKS! Everybody who pledged for a physical reward will get a bookmark of the cast, smush them between the pages of your copy of Fey Winds, or your favourite book!
At 40 000$ - STICKERS! Everybody who pledged for a physical reward will get a set of Fey Winds stickers on top of all the previous goodies!
Risks and challenges
This is my first solo Kickstarter, but I've had comics printed and shipped in the past, so I know my way around the process. I've also done a crowdfunding campaign on my own in the early days of the internet before Kickstarter existed, and that went off without a hitch!
The art is all done and I just need to get the files ready for print, plus I have a lot of help and support from webcomics creators who have a great deal of experience in self-publishing and crowdfunding, so I feel confident that I'll be able to put together an awesome book in an acceptable time frame!
