Hey everyone, I'm Steve Royall and I directed the webseries, This Indie Thing. We shot 3 seasons and over 50 episodes and tried to raise money to shoot the 4th and final season of that show. The plan with the final season was to do it up big. Unfortunately we fell short of our goal and ended up with nothing. Most people would give up or be jaded after putting in all that hard work and getting nothing, but I'm not like most people. I'm a pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again kinda guy. Like Rocky 3, yes we got Clubber Lang'd in the last campaign, but its time to regroup and re-tweak things, and Im now more determined than ever to put together an even better project than before. The new project, a kind of spinoff to This Indie Thing, will follow a new group of characters navigating the choppy waters of this business called Hollywood. You can see some of the new characters in the above video...and thats not even half the new cast!
Since I'm bringing in new characters I'm also bringing in new storylines and taking the show in a completely different direction. The new show will be half scripted/half improv like This Indie Thing, BUT one of the differences with this new show is it will be all comedy. No dramatic moments at all. The focus will be on getting the laughs. And the storylines I have created for this new show are stronger than the last show.
I have cast some amazing talent and look forward to showcasing my new diverse cast. Diversity is very important to me. When I originally put this show together, I didn't want to make it a Black show, White show, Latino, or Asian show. I want to make a Comedy Show with Black, White, Latino, Asian, and other ethnicities in it. The focus will be on the comedy, not the ethnicity. And the goal of this new show is to push the envelope of comedy like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Family Guy.
Why We Need Kickstarter
After our first campaign failed, many people recommended I try the other fundraising platform that lets you keep whatever money you raise, even if you don't reach your goal. That's great but that doesn't really help us. The amount we are trying to raise is the BARE minimum so if we can't raise that, we can't shoot the show. We have some of the cost covered. The show will be shot with the Canon 5D, which we have, and will be shot using SAG union actors, so we need to raise money for the other pieces of equipment we don't have, money for taking care of the actors under SAG rules, and other things to make the production high value. I have a talented Director of Photography, Andres Mejia, who will be helping shoot the project. Heres a breakdown:
- Audio (we need to make sure the sound is good for this show)
- Food for cast and crew
- Color correction
- Make Up
- Permits for certain locations
How Kickstarter Works
Kickstarter is an online fundraising platform that allows creators like us to raise money to make exciting projects like this one. However, Kickstarter is "All or Nothing", which means if we don't reach our goal by the deadline, your credit card will not be charged, and we will not get any of the money at all. Please don't let this happen again!
We have some really cool rewards for donors, and I highly recommend going for any reward that includes the DVD because you will definitely want to see the DVD extras and the special bonus hidden episode that wont be posted online! So lets try this again, and this time lets make it happen!
Risks and challenges
Every project has challenges and ours is no exception. One challenge will be getting locations. I have already begun acquiring locations for us to shoot at and am actively seeking more locations everyday. Another challenge is music. I want to bring in more musical talents to add a variety of sounds to the new show. I have two composers so far, and will seek to add more.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
