More than a band, Riot Upstairs is the passion project of Miriam Card, singer/songwriter/artist/"It Girl" extraordinaire. Some truly talented artists have collaborated and will be collaborating on the Riot Upstairs experience, both for Smashing and for future installments. You can be one of those collaborators by helping fund this project now!
This EP has the potential to explode into a full-length album with your help. The $4000 asked for on this Kickstarter is only barely enough to cover the cost of 3-4 songs. But Miriam has SO MANY more songs than that and each song is worthy of a spot in the limelight. So when the $4000 goal is reached, please don't stop! The more money that comes in, the more songs can be included on the album. Check out the awesome incentives and PLEASE share this kickstarter with EVERYONE so we can meet the backing goal and make this project legit!
This is the deal. Every single penny you give is going toward studio time, studio musicians, mixing, mastering, CD production, liner notes, and the little odds and ends required to produce real, tangible, beautiful albums. It's amazing how much goes into creating an EP and how much every little component costs. Miriam is a kick ass artist and already designed the cover art (see samples in Incentives section below). She will soon be designing the liner notes, poster, bumper sticker, etc., so that will save on cost. Miriam is also a wicked good bargain shopper so no penny will be wasted. And remember, every little bit helps!
So the plan (and it's a very good plan) is to record Smashing at Actiondale Studio headed by the very talented Mike Harvey who, as the producer of the album, will make sure the end product is all that is truly smashing. This is how it'll go down (barring unforeseen circumstances): Miriam, Mike and various spectacular studio musicians will hit the studio within a couple weeks of this Kickstarter ending. Recording Smashing will take approximately two months (possibly longer if we get enough backing to do more than 3-4 songs). Give it another month for mixing/mastering and CD production. Voila! You get your incentives, Miriam gets her dream come true, and one hell of an album gets unleashed upon an unsuspecting public.
Miriam is the genuine noisemaker. She's been singing for as long as she can remember. She started playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 17 when her father gave her her first guitar (a tiny 3/4-sized classical, but it was awesome!). She took to it like she'd been jamming in the womb. From that moment on, Miriam spent practically every moment practicing, writing songs, or dreaming up new ways to share her particular brand of musical genius with the world. She stumbled across classical guitar and dove into it headfirst, using the techniques learned in that discipline to give a truly unique bite to her already passionate sound. Always an artist, Miriam also stumbled into graphic design and illustration and made it a 15+ year career. She learned video editing and other forms of visual art as well, all of which will eventually be used to make Smashing a truly sensory experience (fingers crossed!).
The hope is that once Smashing is recorded, Riot Upstairs will use those songs in a fascinating crowd-sourcing, scavenger hunting, interactive nationwide music video extravaganza. You're right, the world probably isn't ready for the goodness. But there's no stopping it now.

Hear My Demos
So the following pretend music videos are not meant to be anything more than something entertaining to look at while you listen to clips from my demos. (Note the emphasis on demos! Keep in mind these are rough drafts!) The vids are silly fun, so ENJOY!
The album covers, liner notes, bumper sticker, and poster will be based on the following images, but changes may take place between now and printing.

Risks and challenges
Well, because this is the first time Miriam has done any professional recording, the whole experience will be something of a challenge, but that's what makes it great. Ever since she was a kid, people have said that one of Miriam's greatest strengths is that she "gets stuff done." She's very goal-oriented in general, so when it comes to fulfilling a lifelong dream, you'd better bet she's going to get it done.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
