My name is Armando Gallo. You may remember me from my 1980 biography of Genesis, “I Know What I Like”
Since 1970, as a music journalist in London covering the UK rock scene, I started to follow the career of a then very little known British band called Genesis. They would eventually grow to be one of the most influential groups in rock history… but who knew? I didn’t either, but apparently something captivated me strongly enough that made me follow them around the world in the 70s documenting their every move. The result is 10 years of stage and behind the scenes photographs and stories of Genesis starting with the Peter Gabriel days and beyond. For the book, I originally did extensive research interviewing the band members, their families, friends, managers, school teachers, agents and producers. I have dozens of hours of tapes and, literally, thousands of photos from the period. Most Genesis fans think they are an invaluable treasure documenting the best days of their favorite band.
The book has long beenout of print but I have plans to take this part of the Genesis legacy to the 21st Century in a highly interactive Book App format for Tablets with music, sounds, images and other media. I’d like to create a true Genesis Museum that will be always close to you, no matter where in the world you are located. Just sit back, run the App and be filled with the magic of THE magical period in the history of music.
The original version of the book had 176 pages, 80% in Black and White though I obviously have the Color Originals plus all the photos that didn’t make the cut… You know you will not be disappointed.
Since following Genesis I became a Hollywood photographer and everyday I shoot the top stars in the business. But Genesis and this book is my original labour of love and now I would like to jump at the opportunity to work a few months on this exciting project for me and for you my friends and Genesis fans. I was very lucky to be there, one fan among thousands who happened to share their adventures from a privileged point of view. And I always thought YOU should have been there too… This may be the closest thing to re-living these moments, so please join the cause!
To make this definitive edition we need resources and that’s where I need your help . This Kickstarter campaign will secure the funds to create this Definitive Edition as complete as possible. I have thousands of images that need to be scanned professionally, dozens of hours of interviews to digitize, transcribe, remix and enter in a database, lots of great stuff.
In addition, to add to the perfect ambience and mood, Genesis original member and guitarist extraordinaire Steve Hackett will be joining me in this adventure recording new sounds based on old guitar bits and pieces that were work in progress with the band’s countless rehearsals and sessions where the timeless tracks that we love came to be.
Doing all this and the interactive App programming take significant resources and we would be honored if you could help us make this happen. We feature multiple pledging levels with rewards that range from your name in the credits, featuring your Genesis memorabilia in the book, limited edition books, exclusive large format original photos numbered and autographed, the chance to meet me for drinks and autographs and a Q&A session, and for the ultimate Genesis Day spend time at my home looking at my archives and listening to old Genesis stories with autographs, photos and more… I’ll even cook an Italian dinner for you!
We are all in this together… Let’s make sure that this material doesn’t die in my file cabinets and that you, and generations to come can enjoy this treasure that was always meant to be shared.
Thanks for your help,
Risks and challenges
Although all the photographic material is mine, used in a previous copyrighted project and I've spoken with members of the band and management we could face some delays due to music and copyrighted works that we may end up using. If something like that happens we will do changes to the app until everybody's happy!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
