The Minister of Chance is an epic fantasy film based on the amazingly successful podcast series of the same name (you can download it free from www.ministerofchance.com). It boasts an A-list cast, award-winning writing and a legion of worldwide fans. We have already filmed The Prologue (which we will re-shoot) as a teaser.
In a world not our own, Ambassador Durian (Paul McGann) of the technologically advanced country of Sezuan arrives in the sleepy kingdom of Tanto. Charming and handsome, he jovially offers the King a pact of friendship, then explains that if the King declines, his population will be annihilated.
Thus, at a swoop, the slithery Durian conquers Tanto singlehanded and becomes a hero to his people, to the consternation of their hapless leader, The Witch Prime (Sylvester McCoy). The Sezians worship magic and bring their hatred of science to Tanto, where, under the occupation, all scientists are imprisoned.
In this medieval, newly-conquered nation lives the feral Kitty (Lauren Crace). She starts fights and avoids personal hygiene whilst sidelining in bar work.
One rainy night, a cloaked stranger (Julian Wadham) arrives at the Inn asking loudly after a fugitive scientist (Jenny Agutter). As this is extremely dangerous under the Sezian occupation, Kitty's curiosity is piqued.
When she witnesses the stranger creating a doorway from nothing into nowhere, it is piqued further, so she follows him over the Frost Bridge between dimensions and into a wild and dangerous world. There the Minister and Kitty form a fractious bond as they confront the terrifying Horseman (Peter Guinness) using the Minister's colossal intellect and Kitty's unnatural strength.
Meanwhile Durian begins his rise to power within the Sezian government, and engineers a war that will ensnare The Minister, Kitty, and the entire world.
We will use the stunning landscape of our native Cheshire and surrounding areas both to create a spectacular fantasy world and to introduce fans to our beautiful homeland. We would like to bring the business that comes with an epic film to Cheshire, and by using natural landscapes we can cut costs and make a much more believable adventure. We have the crew and transport links within easy reach from Manchester and Liverpool.
We want to make the feature film in four episodes which will be of film quality, but specially tailored so that funders can watch each episode online as soon as it is finished. By producing the film in episodes, we can fully fund the entire feature.
PLEASE NOTE: For reasons we don't understand, Kickstarter doesn't seem to have a system for choosing several different rewards. So - please just let us know which ones you'd like (firstname.lastname@example.org), and pay for them all when you pledge for the most expensive. Sorry about this!)
Risks and challenges
We know that making a succesful full-scale fantasy feature is insanely difficult! We think we can do it because:
It's a great script. Thousands of people across the World have fallen in love with the story.
It works financially: people have not just downloaded it, they have then voluntarily donated tens of thousands of pounds.
It has a sensational cast of actors who are not only brilliant but hugely popular worldwide.
We know it works critically: the same story with the same production team and cast has already had ecstatic reviews in podcast form.
This project has never had any publicity: no hype at all, no advertising budget. It has become a worldwide phenomenon, won awards, attracted amazing reviews and an A-list cast solely because of world of mouth.
The award-winning production team has a proud reputation for excellence and for decent treatment of cast, crew and fans. You are joining a wonderful community.
For the first time ever, you will be able to see the film as it is created in four parts. Part one will be viewable online to funders. If it is not working in any respect, we will be able to change it before the next episode and before the release of the complete movie. This is a unique way of making a film but it will allow all our backers to be more involved in the process.
