Northern Exposure, A Jasper park rock climbing guidebook
Author: Francois Laplante
Jasper is the Northern National Park in the Canadian Rockies and with so much rock, a climbing destination. It has been waiting for a modern rock climbing guidebook for decades now. I have dedicated the last two years of my life to writing this much needed book. I can proudly say that this project is getting close to completion.
Including over five hundreds rock routes, sport, gear and multi-pitch - over fifty boulder problems - several detailed maps - hundreds of high quality photos - several drawings - GPS Tracks - historical facts and much more, this guidebook will showcase Jasper's rock like never before!
It is nice to know If a certain venue has cellphone coverage or not, this book is featuring that for every single venues! No more wondering If a spot is needed or If you simply can call your friends saying that you will be late for diner. You can also simplify your life and download GPS tracks for the climbing area you are going too, no need to read, simply use your Gps add to guide you to your destination.
Gps tracks available as GPX and KML files.

Lots of support and help has been given by the community, including Gravity Gear(Jasper), Gripped Magazine, climbers and friends. Even with all this gracious support, the printing cost is more expensive than other books, largely due to the massive amounts of colored pictures a quality guidebook contains. Together we can make a difference, we can make this guidebook a reality, a dream not only to me, but to every climber in the region and for climbers worldwide. This tool will be useful for the upcoming years revealing what a hidden gem this park is in terms of rock climbing.
My goal in writing this book is simple. Public accessibility to information never revealed or recorded in the past to allow easy access for all climbers. By doing so, increasing Jasper's climbing popularity. By increasing popularity, increasing the amount of climbers coming into the park. With more climbers comes the more eager climbers with the motivation of setting new routes, discovering new crags (there's still so much out there), gaining first ascents and plucking the new gems.
This work has nothing to do with profit, with the hundreds of hours spent climbing, taking notes, taking pictures, drawing maps, writing and editing, there is not much time or money left in my pockets. I am doing it for the passion and the love of the sport. This lifestyle led me to some of the best experiences, best friendships and adventures I could have ever imagined. There is nothing less I can do in return for this sport than writing a high quality guidebook.
If you are in love with climbing as much as I am, or If you simply love the idea and passion behind this project, please donate now!
Risks and challenges
The book is currently at the professional editing stage. The last remaining step will be the publication and printing (through Friesenpress) of the book this coming February and March. If enough money is raised, Northern Exposure should be out by the End of April, if anything happens during the publication process the book will be available up to a month later, at the very latest sometime around May and will still be delivered to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
