About this project
***BIG THANKS to Megan and Peter at Bookbound in Ann Arbor, MI for letting me record my little video in their shop!***
CRAVES will be my 3rd picture book as an independently published author/illustrator! Here are some samples from my first two books (signed copies available as backer rewards!)
And here we are with my new project: CRAVES.
As an independently published book, your support is crucial in this final step to help offset printing costs for CRAVES. We have a goal of $7830 and I know we can hit that target in 30 days. If just 13 people join our campaign each day at the $20 level, we'll meet our goal.
This book has proven to be a wonderful challenge for me as an artist, as well as a writer. The story took over a year to complete, despite being only 190 words(!) The story took so long to come together because my goal was to introduce our youngest readers to some complicated topics: cravings and addiction. I wanted this book to treat these concepts in a way that was meaningful and accessible. I accomplished this by focusing first on writing a solid story, and including elements of metaphor that can then be used to begin a conversation.
The illustrations are black and white, done using watercolor and colored pencil on watercolor block. I don't too often work in b&w, so this was a fun challenge for me, stylistically.
The end product is a dramatic, engaging book that readers of all ages can pick up and read in a few minutes, but will think about, wrestle with, and cherish for a lifetime.
Risks and challenges
Once we hit our fundraising goal, I see very few challenges or obstacles that could prevent us from getting books in our hands. The work is basically all finished. There are possibilities for delays once the formatting/printing process begins. For my part, I insist on producing a book we can all be proud of, so I will not give the final ok on printing until everything looks perfect. But, I haven't had any troubles in the past working with my printer, so I don't anticipate any major delays.
