"How to lose your friends and rule the world"? Revenge of the Dictators fulfills the dire need that's inside all of us. Our pick-up-and-playcompetitive boardgame features Dictators in a ratrace for World Domination. Just disarm some Nuclear Facilities, annoy your fellow Dictators like it's the last thing you'll do, confront the President of the U.S.A. and BOOM, rule the world...
So why should you fund this game?
You just LOVE:
- Being a dictator
- Cut-throating and backstabbing
- Losing your friends
- Playing games with your non-die-hard gamer friends
- Our artwork as much as we do
Although you might recognize some look-a-likes from real Dictators, we want to make sure you know we're not using any of them! Instead, we're using some lesser known grand leaders like Adolf 'the Hipster', Saddam 'the Sadist', and Kim 'the Young-One'.
Kickstarter Limited Exclusive* bonus
Every backer will receive this Kickstarter Limited Exclusive bonus card featuring a well-known favorite American all-time hero. Pure awesomeness!
*This content will only be available in the first print run.
Still not satisfied? Check out our American Agent "Bob" Expansion
With this first expansion, you're able to play with a 6th "friend", except this friend will do anything to prevent the Dictators from succeeding. Bob has his own powerful abilities ánd a special deck of cards, which might force the Dictators to...play cooperatively? That's a dirty word!
The American Agent deck consists of several powerful cards only usable by the American Agent. The special agent acquires these cards by discarding Command cards, or visiting some special sites like Area 51 and the CIA HQ.
The American Agent can also go undercover, to do so he or she rolls a six-sided die at the start of his or her turn. There is a 50% chance that this will happen after which the American Agent stays "undercover" (removing his or her pawn from the board) until a dictator is spotted. Spotting a dictator gives the American Agent certain tactical advantages, for example increasing the DEFCON level. After all, the Amercian Agent wins the game at the end of DEFCON 1.
Here are some incentives we are offering to all our backers:
- €10 off MSRP: pay only €35 instead of €45.
- Get your name in the Rulebook.
- The opportunity to help us design extra Command cards.
- What about a Dictator card with your likeness?
- Get a Kickstarter Exclusive bonus card!
- Add the first Expansion pack with a total new gameplay AND at a discounted price of €12 instead of €18. That's 33% OFF!
Note: the "Funding Father", "World Domination" and "Don't Push The Big Red Button!" pledge levels will also include the majestic beard, traditional Hawaiian Lei, sleeves and sticker sheet.
Additional Dictators, including our higher pledge level backers, will be added soon.
The game is played in turns, with the best dressed up Dictator starting the game. At the start of the game every player receives a unique Passport-card of a Dictator, including a special ability!
A turn consists of up to 3 of the following actions, in any combination:
- DRAW a card
- PLAY a card
- Use your TRAVEL ACTION (Max. 1)
To disarm a Nuclear Facility you first have to make sure you're in the right place. Second, you need to spend your Travel Action and an additional action to attempt the disarming. Finally: roll a 3-6 with a 6-sided die. If your opponents let you, you're now one step further to World Domination. Perhaps you'll even get an awesome wacky bonus?
If you reach Washington D.C. you have a chance of confronting the President. At the start of your turn, draw a Presidential card to see if the President is indeed present. Next, roll a 20-sided die and throw a minimal number, depending on how many Nuclear Facilities you disarmed.
And really, that's it. At least, if you were playing by yourself. But you shouldn't do that according to mommy. There are 122 unique cards, which makes every game different! Apart from your opponents, the U.S.A. uses some anti-Dictator systems as well: DEFCON and Founding Fathers.
For an advanced gameplay run-through download the [concept] rulebook, which will be available in English, German and Dutch (depending on the backers possibly even more).
We think retailer backers should be able to receive the same Kickstarter extras as other backers. In addition, they should receive their rewards before we release regular games into distribution. If you're an interested retailer, please contact Alina at email@example.com during the campaign for pricing information.
In order to be fair to all backers, we will charge shipping after the Kickstarter based on the actual costs. We will collect this via our pledge manager after the campaign ends through BACKERKIT. In addition, we are using Backerkit because it allows us to save time and focus on fulfillment so we can make sure you'll get your game in time to conquer the world!
We're talking to a few fulfillment partners in order to get the lowest shipping costs possible. We're even driving to some countries to ship directly from there. In addition, we offer you the opportunity to pick up your game at some conventions: Essen SPIEL 2016 (more to follow). The shipping charges below are the maximum charges.
Comrade & Party Member pledge levels:
- Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg: €8 (approx. $8.95)
- Rest of Europe: €12 (approx. $13.40)
- Rest of the World: €20 (approx. $22.35)
Per extra base game (excluding the expansion, we'll include this one for free!) the shipping costs will increase as follows:
- Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg: + €2 per game (approx. $2.23)
- Rest of Europe: + €7,50 per game (approx. $8.37)
- Rest of the World: + €15 per game (approx. $16.75)
Black Box Adventures consists of three passionate tabletop gamers from the Netherlands. We are looking for enthusiastic people that would like to help us fund our first game. The early works on this project started almost 5 years ago and we really are looking forward to sharing Revenge of the Dictators with you. As with all Kickstarter campaigns, without your help and support, Revenge of the Dictators might die a horrible premature death, and thus drain all hope of it giving you tons of fun.
Why Kickstarter, and why 20.000?
Well, first of all there is the minimum manufacturing number of 1.000 pieces. We're working with a very trustworthy high-quality game manufacturer located in our vicinity. We even visited the manufacturer to see for ourselves, as we like to triple-check things. This gives the additional advantage of not needing to send the total package from a foreign producer, thus saving us and you freight shipping costs and time.
Second, the stunning artwork and graphic design. Art isn't cheap, especially if you put as much work and effort as Frederick van de Bunt. We chose to integrate both the artwork and the graphic design through one person, in order to have a consistent style and to smoothen out the working process (a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, and now we only have one link..a really strong one... you know what we mean!).
Lastly of course there is the small cut Kickstarter and our Pledge Manager takes. We're not counting the prototype costs, review packages, final prototype, review fees, final prototype 2.0, marketing and all the time and love we put into making Revenge of the Dictators to what it is now. We are not here to make money: we are here to share our beloved project with the world! Every stretch goal reflects this purpose and is designed to add more content and quality to the base game. Therefore, your support really makes a difference!
Whether you completely support us and have your own Dictator card, or just like the project, please like us on facebook, have a look at our website, or lurk a bit more at our 1€ pledge level: we appreciate your efforts!
If you're still reading this you must really like our project, go and back us!

Risks and challenges
Although this is the first game that Black Box Adventures has launched on Kickstarter, we want to put any concerns to rest. While every project has risks, we've done our best to minimize any complications.
All the designs for the game are close to final with any changes coming from additional backer input and stretch goals. In addition, Revenge of the Dictators has been thoroughly play-tested (over 300 playtesters).
We received a lot of quotes of multiple manufacturers, both domestically as well as foreign. In our opinion our choice of a local manufacturer offers the best price/quality rate. We have established solid ties to this manufacturer, as we have inspected the facility ourselves. Once the campaign concludes, we can start to get the manufacturing started asap. We were promised by the manufacturer that the game will be ready before Essen SPIEL 2016, however some events may be out of our reach. If for some unforeseen circumstances we won't be able to deliver the product at Essen SPIEL 2016, we have to arrange a pickup at another convention or charge shipping costs.
Shipping is always a risk, especially when shipping international orders. Because the game is produced in the EU, EU-backers won't need to worry about extra customs charges. We're doing our best to reduce shipping costs for backers worldwide. Backerkit will provide us a lot of help in managing all the pledges, so we are able to focus on the fulfillment.
Lastly, this Kickstarter also marks the start and future of Black Box Adventures. This means that we will do everything in our power to listen to the backers, so together we can make the best we can out of Revenge of the Dictators.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
