Another Update!

We’ve hit our stretch goal! With just hours left, we’re thrilled to see the support still coming in. Any funds we receive now will go directly to the hiring of additional industry personnel and more advanced equipment packages—both of which will broaden the possibilities for storytelling and the opportunities for hands-on experience with the student crew.

A huge thank you from the crew to everyone involved!

Update!

Break My Bones has reached its initial Kickstarter goal! Everyone is excited and very thankful for all of our backers.

The project will remain on Kickstarter for the remainder of the original time period, and we are free to continue to campaign for funds beyond our original goal. What we have decided to do now is to stretch our goal up another $1500 to $10,000. Here's what that would enable us to do:

  • Deepen the recruitment of key crew members to collaborate with our students.
  • Provide audio mixing and mastering in a post production studio.
  • Expand the number of venues and festivals we can target for screenings of the finished film.
  • Open our options further for unexpected production costs that come out of nowhere (which is sure to happen).

Everyone is thrilled to have reached our $8500 goal and motivated for the final stretch. Thank you for helping us get there!

Short Film Summary

Break My Bones is dramatic thriller about Violet, a sick and troubled girl who is forced by her mother to seek the questionable mentorship of a man next door, Mr. Cleveland. He offers little solace and strange advice, while his mysterious wife moans and groans in a room upstairs. Against Mr. Cleveland’s wishes, Violet ascends the stairs and comes face-to-face with Mrs. Cleveland, a woman who might hold the twisted secrets to the threats that surround Violet.

Break My Bones takes viewers on a subversive journey alongside a child coping with both a life-threatening illness and the uncertainties of growing up. Through Violet’s encounter with the Clevelands, the film questions the pressures we put on children and their primal desire to master them. Break My Bones explores this often overlooked side of childhood with a frightening story that is sure to provoke conversation.

Film Personnel

Break My Bones is co-written by Anthony Collamati and David Haynes and features a diverse cast and crew hailing from throughout Mid-Michigan, Detroit, Chicago, and Indianapolis.

Anthony will direct the film. His previous work includes the short film, “Apology,” which won the $100,000 IFP Production Fund Grant and was an official selection at a number of national and international film festivals. He currently serves as a professor of New Media Studies at Alma College, where he teaches courses like Digital Film Production and Backpack Filmmaking and has received the Andison Award for Excellence in Teaching.

David is the film’s producer. He is a recipient of the Lilly Endowment's 2015 Teacher Creativity Fellowship for his work on the production of Break My Bones. He has published about film (“Unstable Tadgh in Jim Sheridan’s The Field,” New Hibernia Review, 2002) and teaches literature, film, and writing at the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities.

Both are dads and find time to write between storybooks and dishes.

The film will bring together experienced professionals to craft the cinematography, sets, and sounds of Break My Bones. Because Anthony and David have also worked in the classroom, they're attempting to create opportunities for these industry experts to collaborate with beginning filmmakers in the Midwest.

Production Schedule

Pre-production has already kicked off, with a core team scouting locations, conducting photography and equipment tests, and securing rights and clearances.  Hiring and casting are scheduled for April, and the shoot is booked for a 5-day run in early July.  Post-production will be completed during July and August.

Need for Support

We need your help to make Break My Bones the cinematic experience we know it can be.  A $5 donation alone gives you access to the completed film.  A $1000 donation makes you an executive producer and gives you all the rewards on the list. Small and large rewards for donations are itemized elsewhere on this page.  As you know, a Kickstarter campaign is not funded until the goal is met (and the goal can be exceeded, if support is strong). If we do not meet our funding goal, you will receive a refund of your donation.

Your support is vital to telling this story, but it is also important in transforming a run-of-the-mill indie production into an important learning experience. As teachers and filmmakers, Anthony and David see this production as an incredible hands-on, applied learning opportunity for students.

During the production of Break My Bones, students will shadow experienced, professional department heads in the essential areas of cinematography, sound, and production design. Your contributions will make it possible to recruit and hire talented leaders to work alongside the student crew members.

The Kickstarter campaign will also provide resources for a humane, safe, and supportive shoot. Those might seem like obvious features, but so often they are left by the wayside in run-and-gun, guerilla-style productions. With Break My Bones, Anthony and David want to ensure that all members of the cast and crew--no matter their experience level--have appropriate accommodations and food while working on-location.

The donations you make will also help keep shooting days to a challenging but fair workload. This way, not only will the crew have time to bring Violet's story to life with care and precision, but there will be time for meaningful exchanges and partnerships with students.

The majority of this Kickstarter campaign will be dedicated to providing the environment where this kind of partnership and learning can take place.

Funding will also enable us to pay actors the minimum union wage for work in a low-budget, independent picture.

If we are able to meet and perhaps even exceed our budget, we will use additional money for post-production services (particularly with sound mixing and mastering), key props and set design, locations fees, and travel expenses for our crew and actors.

Thank you

We are genuinely grateful for any and all contributions to this project. We hope to make Break My Bones into a special film that sheds light on the nature of threats, a film that brings together students and teachers in the telling of Violet's story, and a film that you will feel proud to have supported. Thank you.

Risks and challenges

Filmmaking is always a risky and potentially expensive endeavor because film production involves many moving parts and many contributors at every stage. Many films are not made because the money simply isn’t there and equipment, for example, is extraordinarily expensive. Many films are also not made because the filmmakers are not prepared for the realities of film production.
What we have to offset the inherent risks of making a film are the following assets:
1. An experienced director in Anthony Collamati, who has successfully brought both a feature and short film to completion from preproduction to postproduction.
2. Access to state-of-the-art equipment through Alma College's New Media Studies program.
3. A complete, ready-to-shoot script with a full breakdown, itemized budget, and filming schedule.
4. Determination. David and Anthony, in particular, believe in the screenplay enough to make the film without any financial support. To make the best film possible and to create this unique educational experience, however, we need your help.
