When kids in the Netherlands hear their mom or dad yell out “Etenstijd!”, they race to the kitchen to find out what’s for dinner today. And racing to see what’s for dinner is what this table-top card game is all about!
Etenstijd! is a quick, fun and strategic table-top cardgame for 2-6 players. To win the game players have to mix and match ingrediënts as fast as they can, while avoiding Wild Cards that mess up their plans.
Quick - Learning to play the game only takes a few minutes. After one practise round everyone is ready to cook! Total gameplay is 15-30 minutes.
Fun - Sixteen wacky Ingredient Cards are waiting to be turned into four different meals that everyone around the world will recognize. Fun enough? Well, we spiced things up by adding Wild Cards. Better watch out or you might find your meal burned or stolen!
Strategic - The four meal combinations vary in difficulty. Are you cooking for less points with an easy combination or more points with a harder to get combo? Players have to decide fast and must be ready to switch strategies when a situation suddenly changes.

The goal of the game is to score the highest amount of points.
The goal of each round is to combine ingredients and make the best meal possible.
Every card is worth a certain amount of points. This amount can be found in the top right and bottom left corner of each card. A complete meal doubles your score.
Special Cards are used to substitute an ingredient. With Special Cards you can complete a meal, although the card itself is worth 0 points. Only the Special Everything Card can be used as a substitute for all ingredients. Other Special Cards can be used only to replace a missing sauce, base, vegetable or meat.
There’s one Extra Special Card, called the Leftover Dish. With this Special Card you can combine all ingredients into a dish- but it doesn’t double points.
A game consist of five rounds. After each round players calculate their scores and write them down.
Whoever has the most points combined after all five rounds, wins the game!
Here’s some examples on how to count after the round ends:
Start of the game - After shuffling the deck and putting it face down on the table, each player takes four cards from the deck into their hands. Players with Wild Cards replace them by new cards from the deck and place the wild cards next to it, forming a new open pile.
The game is played turn-based and clockwise. The player left from the dealer starts the first round.
Start of a round – Player one has to make a decision: he (or she) takes a card from the closed deck or takes the top Ingredient Card from the open pile. If he decides to take a card from the deck, he then performs one of two actions depending on what kind of card is drawn:
1) Ingredient Card or Special Card - player can either discard it to the open pile or add it to his hand.
2) Wild Card – player adds the Wild Card to the open pile and performs action:
- Burned – Throws away all four cards, places them under the closed deck and takes four new cards from the top of the deck
- Fork – Blindly trades one of his own cards for another player’s card
- Switch Plates – Every player switches all his cards to the left
After taking an Ingredient Card or Special Card, he discards one of the cards from his hand to the top of the open pile.
Players never hold Wild Cards in their hand. Actions must be performed right away. After playing a Wild Card it’s the next players turn.
The next player also decides to take a card from the closed deck, or from the open pile. He discards one of his cards or performs an action.
This goes on until one player yells “Etenstijd!” or “Last round!” after performing an action.
End of a round - When someone announces the last round, all others play one more hand. Then everyone shows their cards and counting begins. The player with most points deals the next round.
Note: To end a round players don’t need to have a complete meal. For example, players can also call for last round if they only have three of the four ingredients that make up a complete meal.
End of the game - The game ends after playing five rounds. The player with most combined points wins the game.
Etenstijd! is a card game invented by “Daffan” – the amazing company name that coincidentally combines both it's CEO's names - Daphne and Stefan.
We are a Dutch couple who love playing table-top games. We especially like fast games that are easy-to-learn and don’t take all evening to play.
What we missed in our collection of table-top games was one that you can play with two players (or more) and where you can still talk during gameplay. Not too difficult that it needs your full attention, but still a lot of fun! That’s when we set out to design a game that would do just that!
After adjusting the rules endlessly and testing the game for countless of hours with friends, family, enemies and even some industry pro’s – the verdict was unanimous: this game has the potential to bring a lot of joy to people all round the world!
Because we are passionate about this game and think it should definitely be made, we broke down our Kickstarter goal into three steps.
€2000 – Printed cards, basic packaging, rules as pdf
€3000 – Printed cards, basic packaging, printed scorecard and rules
€4000 – Printed cards, premium packaging, printed scorecard and rules
We are excited to make this happen!
Now it’s up to you…!
Risks and challenges
-All artwork and design is ready and we already found a printing partner.
-Printing takes 4 to 6 weeks after payment is transfered
-We will ship as soon as possible. Depending where you are in the world, we do all we can to make sure it arrives before Christmas 2018!
-Delays can always happen and the usual risks that are concerned for all Kickstarter projects apply.
-We didn’t start this project to make money and we will not make much even if we reach the final stretch goal, it’s all about passion. If anything happens along the way, we will be fully transparant to you – our amazing backers.
Thanks so much!
