Our Story

Incorporated in 1989, New Dance Alliance (NDA) is an arts service organization whose mission is to actively promote emerging forms of innovative dance, music, video, and interdisciplinary performance. NDA’s initial aims were to support an artistic community that has limited institutional resources, and to provide that community with increased opportunities to share experimental works with the public. NDA’s legacy of services to artists and audiences began almost three decades ago, when Karen Bernard opened up her Tribeca loft as a low- cost rehearsal space. From those first moments, its programs have grown organically and in direct response to artists and audiences. Today, NDA’s goals remain deeply rooted in those founding principles and have expanded in response to current artistic challenges and goals.

New Dance Alliance is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Your contribution is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We Believe

  •  All voices need to be heard—the alternative and the new, those pushing boundaries and defining fresh genres and those who have made a difference historically.
  • Art allows us to see things in new contexts.
  • Experimentation and collaboration support greater understanding.
  • A single voice can provide inspiration for others.

Our Programs

Performance Mix Festival

In 1986 New Dance Alliance (NDA) created the Performance Mix series now known as the Performance Mix Festival to advance emerging methods, techniques, and trends of innovative dance. Of the many dance festivals in New York, NDAs Mix stands alone in its commitment to: 1) offering artists comprehensive career and artistic development support; 2) presenting risk-taking art by emerging and established artists at a critical experimental phase of their development; and 3) providing programming for audiences interested in the creative process of experimental dance and performance.

The festival has grown to include artists from around the globe, including South Africa, Canada, Europe, and South America. Director Karen Bernard has been invited to many festivals across Canada and Europe, forming relationships that have broadened her curatorial process and widened the festivals scope. By bringing her expansive awareness of culture into an intimate setting, Bernard cultivates an important sharing of creativity internationally.

LiftOff Creative and Project Development Workshop and Residency Program

LiftOff is an NDA program offering residencies and workshops in which performing artists develop the creative and business aspects of their work. The LiftOff Creative and Project Development Residency and LiftOff Workshop are facilitated by Karen Bernard, Artist and Director of New Dance Alliance with invited guests from the “industry”. The workshop encourages dance and performance that explores cross over disciplines such as spoken word, visual art, video and sound manipulation. The group has a limited number of participants in order to allow for short and longer works to be shared and to promote dialogue.

Our artists share their works globally, including in Montreal’s FTA Festival, Portland’s PICA, ImPulsTanz festival-Vienna International Dance Festival, and have been recognized with coveted honors and awards such as the Silver Lion Award for Innovation in Dance (Venice Biennale), the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, the Doris Duke Artist Award, and the NYC Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award.

Subsidized Rehearsal Space

New Dance Alliance provides subsidized rehearsal space at 182 Duane Street. NDA’s private loft space holds 40 years of inspiration and is conveniently located in the heart of Tribeca. The space is 23 feet x 30 feet with 10.5 ft. ceilings, linseed oil finished sprung-wood floor, mirrors, curtain covers for mirrors, low-flying trapeze point, natural light, wifi, audio and two big windows.

Over 100 artists use our space annually to create new works.

Since the 1980s, Karen Bernard has shown her unique perspective on the importance of women's voices through the creation and production of original works that focus on female identity and empowerment, exploring topics such as age, gender, and motherhood. Through her extensive travels, she has been able to meet many national and international artists, many of whom she has nurtured and presented—some for the first time in New York City.

Risks and challenges

While New Dance Alliance has been providing resources to marginalized artists for over 40 years, running an arts non-profit of this caliber is inherently challenging and risky. We provide support to diverse, cutting-edge artists and this in itself is ambitious. Primarily supported by grants and individual donations, we run our programing on a shoestring budget. This limits staff hours and fees to artists. With your support and our established history, we know we will overcome these challenges, continue to strengthen our infrastructure and provide meaningful fees to the artists.
